Tivo Dialup, upgrade ?

I do not have a phone line at the house.. only a cell phone. I do not connect for Directv. If I want to upgrade my Tivo software and take it to a friends house to update... will their phone number show and get me in trouble because it is not from my cell phone that is not on record with DTV?
Is it a different number that Tivo calls or is it the same number as DTV?
Should I call Directv and give them my friends number for the record?

Different number. Tivo communcations are over a dial-up ISP connection, over local dial-ups for a national ISP dial-in reseller. DirecTV dial-ins directly to DirecTV, and are only for PPV reportback and location verification.

So, is it ok to do Tivo upgrade from friends?

Also.. how long does an update take...

Yes, as far as your relationship with DirecTV and Tivo go.

Do you have a broadband Internet connection? Your Tivo can use it to download program data. That way you don't have to take the Tivo to your friend's house every two weeks.
With a Series II, its a standard feature to connect a USB network adapter. With a Series I, you can buy an aftermarket network kit or use a special serial cable to connect the Tivo to a computer which in turn is connected to the Internet. (search the forum for details).
If you do take it to your friend's house, the call does not take that long (I think less than 20 minutes) but then it takes several hours to process the data. You could try unplugging the Tivo after it hangs up (when you manually start the call, the screen reports when each stage is done) and then plugin it in again at home. I assume it will pick up where it left off, but you should verify it.
