Since Tivo runs all the time, can have lots of storage, should have all my music and video on it, is there a way to run Samba, or use it as a file and back up server for my home network?

You forgot how slow it is, especially in network transfers. But, yeah, Samba should work. It might need a fake /etc/passwd or something.

I didn't realize the Tivo would be slow. Is the USB port only 1.1? I presume there is no easy way to add Ethernet is there?
Have you seen a install procedure for Samba? what passwd are you thing of?

You add Ethernet by dropping a dongle onto the USB port. (There's a different procedure for the USB-less Series 1's, but it's no faster.) Re: USB 1.1 vs 2.0, I'm told that both 1.1 and 2.0 hardware exists on the Tivos out there, while they come with 1.1 drivers. My HDVR2 has 2.0 hardware, and I've replaced the drivers with 2.0 drivers. But that still doesn't get me above ~2.0 MBps, IIRC.
As for lots of storage, you can't conveniently use it, since it's devoted to MFS. You could repartition your drive with a large ext2fs partition (removing the corresponding amount of space from that available for video); or you could write some kind of wrapper to store and retrieve files in MFS (making it even slower).
You could do this, but I wouldn't. I think the Tivo could be useful for certain server applications (perhaps time service, DNS, or even a light mail load), but it's just a poor choice for a file server.
I don't really understand your last paragraph. You'd install Samba like any other Linux program. And if you don't know what /etc/passwd is, sorry, but you can forget trying to undertake this project. You need to learn some Linux/Unix basics first.
/etc/passwd is a text file where the system keeps the list of users, traditionally (as suggested by the name) along with their passwords. (Most systems don't even keep the passwords there anymore, but that's another topic.) Samba depends on this, among other things, to control access to the system. It's not there on the standard Tivo, but it could easily be created. There may be other dependencies in Samba that aren't as obvious or easy to deal with; probably not, but I haven't actually tried it, and I don't know of anyone else doing it.
