mfstools problem

Has anyone ever had a problem booting with a MFSTool CD?
Every time I try to book (no matter how many or few HD I have in the machine)
It freezes at the IDE detection phase. Just for kicks I threw in the slack install disk and it booted fine. Any ideas. I need to replace my A drive because it died. I have an image but I can't get MFSTools to boot so I can create a new A disk.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not that uncommon to have booting problems. The kernel on those disks is very old.

MFS Tools will run under any version of Linux - I tend to use Tom's Root and Boot Disk, but your Slackware boot disk should be OK (try Alt-F2 for a second prompt) - just copy the mfstool binary from the CD to the root of your C: drive.

Once you've mounted the hard drive as per Hinsdale, you can run MFS Tools as

/mnt/dos/mfstool backup <etc>

instead of mfsbackup.

Or use the floppy.

I tried the floppy. Same thing.

Good idea though

Zarnce,
I found the other day that everything went much better when I told the computer to use legacy settings when dealing with the hd (in BIOS). I am not sure what that does, but it worked like a champ.
