HR10-250 With Samsung HLN4365

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello all. I am considering purchasing the HR10-250 but I have a few concerns.
First of all, I have a Samsung HLN4365.
When I watch Standard definition shows I like to use Panorama mode. From what I have been able to gather, I won't have this option with the HR10-250?
Also, I am concerned about the DVI connection. Will I be able to use the DVI
connection? Will there be any issues with standard def programming where you have to switch video inputs or is it seamless? Does all the programming come through the DVI or component cables or does it work like a DVD/VCR where you need separate connections?

Thank you for your answers in advance.

I've had no / few issues with my Sammy 50".

Panorama mode will work... but not via DVI. If you want to stretch, you'll have to also hook up the component inputs and switch to them for the TVs stretch modes.

DVI (on my HD Tivo, at least) works great. It shows all content (HD and SD). However, you will need the second (component) connection if you want to apply stretch, zoom, etc. using the TV modes.

Hope this helped.

Just get an SD DTiVo. DirecTV will sell you one for $50. Then you can use the HD-TiVo for only HD.
My SD TiVos will mainly be used now to backup my OTA shows with the SD versions, and to record Lifetime for my girlfriend.

I already have a Directivo and a Hughes E86 HD receiver. I'm interested in recording shows in High defintion but I would rather not have to switch between boxes or video inputs if I didn't have to and to keep it more simplified for the family.

Well, my concern is whether or not I would even be able to use Panorama at all using the component input. Currently I have a Hughes E6 receiver connected to the component input and I can only use Wide or normal on that input.

I have a 50" Samsung. IIRC, the only available options on Component are Wide and Normal. Panorama only works on ANT, S-Video or Video1/Video2.

So I believe the simple answer no, you won't be able to use Panorama.

Use the composite outputs for SD and you'll be able to utilize the whole range of Sammy picture configs. I kept my old GXCEBOTd and have it hooked up via composite, just for the SD which comprises, sadly, most of everything still available.

You can't switch back-and-forth between component and DVI on the HR10-250 without unplugging the other. I leave the HDMI cable-to-DVI hooked up all the time to my HLN4365W. The only thing I've discovered is that, especially for sports, the quality of SD coming from the HD receiver through DVO to the Sammy is noticeably better than using the old SD/composite combination. Everyone has been surprised at the improvements made simply by using DVI.

I recorded both ways during a few of the Euro 2004 Tournament, this weekend, and have decided to use the HR10-250 for the whole tournament and just put up with the 4:3. I can't deal with soccer players looking like they're 4'10".

So Ed, you can connect the HDTivo using DVI and simultaneously use S-video (Or composite) and switch the input on the Samsung and still be able to access all the screen modes?
That could work.
Is there going to be any compatibility issues (now or down the road) regarding this HDMI with our DVI input on the Samsung?

Shouldn't be any problem with it. Theoretically the Hollywood types who are as panicked over digital transmission as they were over VHS might muck it up; but, the FCC certainly is aware of what a TiVo is for -- and what HD is for -- and I consider it unlikely they'll try to cause a backwards compatibility disaster.

The next gen of Samsung DLP [and the ever-expanding number of their competitors] seem to include both DVI and HDMI to cover those bases -- but, the reality of that decision is more than one device outputting to the TV.

I have been pleased with the HR10-250 with a 50" Sammy DLP via DVI. The ease of use is much improved over my previous separate receivers (Sony HD200 & SAT-T60). In my opinion, the HD PQ is similar and the SD PQ is better.

The ability to time-shift HD and the wife/babysitter not having to switch between receivers are both winners. Ease of use outweighs any features lost (I've never wanted to stretch SD content).

The biggest errata currently seems to be audio dropouts on HDNet (most recordings loose audio during program).

Hope this helps.

Thx for your responses.
I'm going to try an order/buy one soon. My hopes of finding one are low considering some of the posts I have read here.

Sorry, I'm late to this thread. The HD Tivo does not offer any stretch modes? That would hurt. I was planning on using them (instead of my TV's).

I've got the same combination (HR10-250 and HLN4365W). It's excellent. I would highly discourage going the SD DVR route. SD looks tons better with the HDTiVo upconverting and sending it over DVI as opposed to an SDTiVo over S-Video.

Thx AaRdVarK3. How do you watch SD, Wide or normal?

Posted by: AaRdVarK3

Normal. I output 1080i from the TiVo even though the display is 720p. The scaling and the deinterlacer in the HLN is much better than the one in the TiVo in my opinion (and others in the forum).

When you are using DVI you don't get access to any of the stretch modes on the television. This leaves you with the Normal and Wide on the TiVo. I go with Normal cause I'm a purist, I guess. I'm sure if I'd gone with Wide, I would've gotten used to it in a few weeks. What freaks me out when I try it is when I see something that I know to have equal height and width (stop signs, squares, etc).

I've also tried Panorama on stuff coming into the component inputs, and that is worse than wide to me. Watching faces change shape as the camera pans across them freaks me out too.
