Just ordered one.

IN!!!
Finally!
Posted by: HEB1022
Just got one..but no confirmation email back yet...
Posted by: MrCoolDu4
I got one too. It'll be interesting to see how long they last. I just got back from a local Tweeter and I let the salesman talk me into purchasing one thats not due to arrive until the 30th. He did tell me I could cancel at anytime though and thats what I intend to do. Its on a Tweeter account too so I'm not worried. But....I cannot believe the wait is over !!! And now I can get my $100 back from VE too.

Got mine. #44XX-617XXX
Posted by: dmastro
I ordered mine in the last batch. Let me be the first to say don't stress out (like I did) if you don't get a confirmation e-mail for a while. I didn't even get my confirmation until the next day after it shipped.
Posted by: HEB1022
Did you get a confirmation email back? It seemed to take my order and it shows up with an order number online, but I didn't get a confirmation email back.
Posted by: mortifer
I ordered and after the order it still said available... come on #2!!!
Posted by: gr8reb8
I have not received an conf. e-mail. I do see my order and ordernumber online though. :)
Posted by: unixadm
Just got in as well!
(I already have a couple of other pre-orders, but this will be faster)
Let's see if I get the confirmation email and a shipping date.
Posted by: Golfjackal
Got it! Overjoyed. Thanks Sushifishman.
Posted by: Fata|Fact
Good to see some people actually getting these things. I'm willing to bet production is gonna start rolling.

One hour, and they are still available..........
Posted by: Starrbuck
Does this perhaps signal that they got in a buttload of them and that production has picked up?
Posted by: BrianCT
Internet went down for a minute, while I was placing my order! Talk about stressed....thankfully I got my order placed over the phone. The lady taking the call was a little slow, and all I could think of was, "They are selling out, hurry!" :D Anyway, order was placed with no problems, I even went with the 2-3 business shipping.....Do they email you a tracking # when shipped or will it just show up?
Posted by: dmastro
You will get a tracking number. I found that the CC website had updated information long before the e-mails for order confirmation or tracking number were received, but they will show up eventually.
Posted by: gatorbait
Confirmation email received!
Posted by: BrianCT
Just got my confirmation email also!!! Ship those boys out CC!
Posted by: tlrowley
Got mine too - now it's guaranteed that GG will get mine in. Either way, I should have one by next weekend!
Thanks for the heads-up,
Tracey

No confirmation email yet. Online I do have a UPS tracking number though.

CC website shows mine shipped via FedEx with Tracking number. :D

They must have received alot. They are still available.
Posted by: BrianCT
Wow, mine too....they are quicker than I thought!!! Fedex # with Premium Air....niceeeeeeeeeeee
Posted by: cashmoneymac
Just ordered mine 30 min ago - thanks very much for letting me know they were available!!!
Posted by: cashmoneymac
yea baby !!!!
sory just very excited - been waiting a long time and had thought it would be Fall at best before I got one.
Posted by: videojanitor
HEY NOW! Just ordered one at 12:45pm (Pacific Time) -- still available! Sweet!!
Kinda bummed that this means I'll have to cancel my $899 pre-order at Abt, but what the hell -- I'm tired of checking this board every day. :D
--Bill R.
Posted by: BrianCT
Well Bill, it pays off to check the board, and I think CC owes sushifishman a lil kickback :)
Posted by: cashmoneymac
Questions - I have a Hughes series two already installed, along with a 3 lnb equiped oval Sat dish, with two cable feeds coming down from the dish to the Tivo. Can I just remove my regular Direct Tivo and replace it with my new HD Direct Tivo in terms of physical installation? I know I have to call Direct and subscribe to HD and activate that unit somehow.
Posted by: videojanitor
Brian,
I guess I should have said, I am tired of checking this board and always reading about some guy who just happened to saunter into a particular store and found one sitting on the shelf. Those stories were KILLIN' me. :)
Even though, I have to say, I nearly hesistated on this. I had talked myself into waiting for Abt since I got such a good price, and there really isn't much HD programming on during the summer months that interests me -- so I figured I could wait it out (Abt says "August"). But in the end, I just had to pull the trigger and end the suspense!
--Bill R.
Posted by: mcwhlman
I just got mine. I can't wait until it comes. But they must have just got them, because I was online yesterday and they were sold out but I put one in the shopping cart anyway lucky lucky lucky.
Posted by: BrianCT
I agree Bill!!! I was also tired of hearing "They should be in by mid July etc etc.....glad to see others got in on it as well, lets see how long they are available on CC's site.....lady said they went in 30 mins last time...
Posted by: Cody21
I'm in !! Thanks everyone ...
Posted by: videojanitor
Brian,
Yeah, you gotta wonder why some places, especially big places like Abt don't expect to have any until August, while places like CC are getting semi-regular shipments now? I guess there must be a lot of "behind-closed-doors" deals that determine who gets what, and when.
--Bill R.
Posted by: Fata|Fact
Dang they must have gotten a huge shipment this time. I think this is the longest window yet.

I've had one in my shopping cart since the last June 3rd window. :D I'd check on it every now and again, just see if maybe it would become "available," but it never did. Then when I saw this thread, I just went into the cart and continued the check-out!
--Bill R.

Got my confirmation email, and tracking number!
Posted by: Fata|Fact
Looks like 22 orders just in this thread alone!!
Posted by: videojanitor
I wonder how many units it would take to quench the thirst on this forum? If they received, oh let's just say, 500 units -- and everyone on this board that wanted one ordered one, do you think that would pretty much end the drought, at least as far as this online community goes?
--Bill R.
Posted by: Fata|Fact
thats an interesting question video.. I'd like to see as many people get them here as possible. I can hear the waiting lists getting shorter and shorter...
Posted by: Tusk
Well, still no confirmation, but the FedEx site shows that it was picked up in Marion, IL with scheduled delivery Tuesday by 4:30.
That is a pretty fast turnaround. :)
Posted by: Obie3612
I got mine at 4:09. No email or CC site confirm yet.
Posted by: Fata|Fact
Make this a 2-hour long window...
Posted by: Golfjackal
Mine already shows that it has been picked up by FedEx. I ordered an hour and a half ago.
Posted by: CalypsoCowboy
Dang, the only reason I want to buy one is to resell it on Ebay. Must resist.
Posted by: BrianCT
I used to prefer BB over CC, but not anymore! I too have a confirmed Tuesday delivery....looks like CC expected the rush, and were fully prepared to handle it. Great job CC!!
Posted by: BrianCT
I wouldnt do it, Calypso....the backlog is almost over, and I foresee many people being stuck with units as the preordering is catching up...I feel sorry for those who paid $2000-2500 now!
Posted by: Dean Martin
Ordered mine waiting for confirmation email.

Based on VE's pre-order list I would think 500 would make a very large dent and 1000 should just about do it.
He did say he had 2200 (IIRC) preorders but many have cancelled.

Hey Brian! Where are you guys getting these "confirmations?" When you check your order status on the CC website? When I check mine, all it says is: Ordered: 06/18/04 03:47:35 PM
Maybe that's because I cheaped-out and went with the free shipping? I can wait a few extra days, as long as I know it's on the way!
--Bill R.
Posted by: BrianCT
Yes Bill, they havent prepared a tracking # for yours yet, they did for those that were shipped via Fed-Ex air....you should see your tracking # on Monday or Tuesday I would bet.....the # will be on the right side of your order, cant miss it!

CC has done a great job of limiting their web orders to stock they actually had available. They must have gotten a BIG shipment this time!

Actually, I "cheaped-out" too and went with free shipping, but I have a tracking number for UPS. It's not showing up on th UPS site yet, but that's not unusual.

There's no risk. Use the free shipping, and if it doesn't sell for at least what you paid, take it back to CC to get a full refund and you're only out the eBay listing fee.

Thanks for the tip!
Ordered mine at 2:10 PM Pacific Time and the order went through, so evidently they still have them.
This will be my second unit to replace my standard TiVo SAT-T60 in another room. Hope the HDMI works on this newer one, as the first one has a dead HDMI output.
Thanks,

Bill, the tracking number didn't come in the confirmation email, but was available when I checked "My Account" on the CC website.
HTH,

They are still available - at 4:32pm CDT. I don't need one, but I wanted to check. Only $10 extra for "premium air" delivery as well.
The pain with them is paying tax (9.25% for me), but the 3 year "Advantage" warranty is only $65. The D* protection plan is $8 a month, so you get 3 years for what you would pay D* in 8 months.
What that noise? Maybe the bottom dropping out of the prices on fleabay :)
Dennis

Tracey,
Thanks ... I have been checking the "My Account" page of the CC site -- still nothing there, other than the order number, date and time. Never received a confirmation email either. Dunno if that's a bad sign ...

Woo Hoo... I got my order confirmation from CC via e-mail! They've hit my mastercard too. It's real! Now to setup the new Sammy 50" DLP that's sitting in my truck bed at home!
Holy Schnikies, they're *STILL* available on the website... 3 hour + window and counting!

Hmmm, no confirmation here. I just called 'em though, and they told me the order has been processed and will be shipped on Monday ... so I guess all is well.

Wow, I seemed to have snagged one. Got my confirmation email almost right away. I almost missed it because I cannot monitor the CC website or this forum very often from work.
However, I have some software at home set up to monitor the CC webpage, and used a command line mailer to trigger the alert to me at work. Got out of a long meeting, and there it was!! I didn't realize, due to the meeting, that the window had been open since about 1:30pm Central.
I can't believe I set this all up and it actually went according to plan. :D
Posted by: turls
what is the procedure to get CC to match the prices I had on my other pre-orders (VE, ABT). (if I get it). That would more than pay for the 3 year warranty through CC.
I know somebody else said they did it.

see i knew i wasn't nuts..

it is red for me now, but it wasn't at x:15. Just got in, or they screwed up again.

Lady400 -- congrats! I know all too well the feeling of being busy with actual WORK and missing out on these windows -- so it's good to see that you managed to get one anyway.

I received my confirmation email in about 40 minutes. I'm quite sure I was not in time for CC's "ship it today" cutoff time, so I doubt I will see a tracking number until Monday.

That's just how it is. If no one adopted early they would stop making them.

don't worry greg.
There should be enough on trucks from Mexico these days to make sure almost no one makes a killing selling them on ebay anymore.
And hopefully, these greedy "entrepreneurs" will end up getting hosed.

Once you get your unit or have your online receipt you can take a copy to your local CC (They won't do it online) and buy an extended protection plan. 5 years for $89.99, 3 years for around $69, and it's for a REPLACEMENT! If you have any problems just take it to the store and get a new one!
I am so happy to see all of you finally getting one!
Posted by: Drenhead
I got an order number on the CC website, but I haven't received a confirmation e-mail. Do you think the order number means I am all set?
Posted by: MrCoolDu4
I think the best way to check your status is to go to CC online and login. From there you can check your order status and it should give you a tracking number too.

You can order it right online, you have to disable your popup blocker as it pops up the offer when you add the HDTivo to your cart. 3 years for $64.99.
Also, if you already have one in your cart and then add another it will NOT popup and offer you the extended warranty. You have to empty the cart, then re-add w/o the popup blocker.
I got one from 6th Ave last week so I avoided the local 9.25% sales tax, but if I had ordered from CC I would have sprung for the 3 year warranty. D* gets $8 a month for protection (of all your stuff) so $65 for 3 years is a nice deal. I bet they are charging the wrong price on this - this is unusually low (6.5%) for the warranty.

Dwynne,
Why not buy the coverage from Directv that covers ALL of your equipment?
My remote had a button break off and D* sent me a new one right away.
It covers your dish and all of you receivers.

Well, I don't know about the D* protection plan... we never ever finish paying for it, even after our equipment is no longer cutting edge.
The CC plan will cover the remote too. And if you buy the dish from CC, they'll protect that for a full three years for only one payment of $7. And that includes sending an installer out to put up a new one if a windstorm or lightning knocks out or misaligns the dish.
My wife thinks THAT's a good idea. She doesn't want me up on the roof any more. Does the D* plan include sending a tech out to go up on your roof if you need a new dish?
So it seems to me that the CC one time payment is far more economical than D*'s. If I cover the HR10250 and the dish, I am better off financially after the break-even point of 9 months.
And 3 years is probably about how long I plan to be using the 10250 before i figure I'll need to upgrade.
Someone else mentioned just taking the box over to the store for a replacement. Actually, the store don't swap 'em out, that's done by calling the toll free number. They'll ship you a new one and you send the old receiver back.
But let's all pray that any more problems hold off until there are more units in the pipeline.... how can anyone get replacements when we have only just begun to see the orders being filled for the first time now?:D
Posted by: JAB
I've seen CC insist that their extended warranty only covered repairing the broken unit. I've seen some pretty ugly scenes at customer service over this very issue.
Is everyone sure this policy is for replacement with a new unit?
/jab
Posted by: MikeCC
Well, most things covered under the service plan are likely to be repaired; however, DirecTV receives are handled a little differently.
I've seen some ugly things at my local Circuit City about repairs, too, but honestly, that's because some people I've seen just have wildly unrealistic expectations.
Neither DirecTV nor CC will promise to send a NEW unit to replace a malfunctioning one. Right now, if there are new units around, perhaps; but eventually, replacements are likely to be refurbished units. If you think a manufacturer will promise you a NEW unit if yours ever malfunctions, please stop buying things. You will only be disappointed.
The specific wording of the service plan is found at the CC website, but I've copied a portion for you:
6. DIRECTV® Receivers. If the covered Product is a DIRECTV® Receiver, You must call (888) 333-2333 to report the Product failure. We may replace the Product with a new or rebuilt receiver in lieu of effecting repairs to the covered Product, at the sole discretion of the Service Provider or its designee. In such event, You will be required to return the original Product to the Service Provider, at the Service Provider's reasonable expense. You may be required to provide a credit card number as a guarantee that the defective Product will be returned.
Just don't try to take it back to a store, because they don't have the replacement units to exchange to you.
Of course, I suppose the plan can't cover EVERYTHING. If my kids roughhouse and knock the unit onto the floor, the physical damage is not covered. (I have yet to find any performance plan that covers that kind of stuff!)
Fortunately, I'm sure all of us here are so careful (hmm, obsessive? fanatical? over-the-top?) that we'd do everything possible to avoid physical damage...
I've had luck with Circuit City's performance plans. I don't get them on all things, but with a newly released product having a 250 Gig hard drive, two HD DirecTV sat receivers, and two HD OTA receivers, the performance plan lets me sleep a little better at night.

The CC plan is $65 one time for 3 years, with D* it is $8 a month "forever" - in 3 years you will have paid $288 to D*!! The D* plan DOES cover more stuff, like re-aligning the dish, etc. My other 3 D* units are DTivos (with upgraded drives). Since I could replace any of them for $99 now, there does not seem to be too much benefit from paying $8 a month. I installed all my own stuff and even have a spare triple LNB dish.
All that said, I signed up for the $8 a month when I activated my HDTivo. There have been plenty of stories of failures early on and it SEEMS D* takes better care of you if you have the protection.
Note that there IS a 30 day waiting period before you can file a claim, so if you get a DOA or Dead soon after arrival box you will have to deal with the dealer (if they have any more), a return, or sending it off for warranty service. It is not clear to me if you already are on the plan if a newly activated box has the same 30 day limit or not. If not, then everyone should activate as soon as they know the HDTivo is on the way to eliminate some of the 30 days.
I figure once my HDTivo has "burned in" a few months I will likely cancel the plan and take my chances - but in the event I have an early failure then I will be glad I have it.

Some of these unrealistic expections are a result of CC salesman. I bought a camcorder as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago at CC. The salesman was pushing hard on the extended warranty, and insisted over and over that should anything go wrong, the unit would be replaced immediately, not repaired. He even used this heavily as a selling point. When I asked to see the policy in writing first, he was very hesitant. I informed him I would not buy without seeing the actual policy, and he still hesitated. He finally went and found a copy, and lo and behold, such was not the case; the wording was very similar to that posted above. I refused the warranty, as I despise salesmen who simply lie to your face.
I still feel it is a customer's responsibility to read the fine print in such purchases, but salesmen like this really piss me off.

AFAIK, Dell CompleteCare covers exactly that. It specifically includes accidental damage. I think other computer manufacturers, including IBM, have similar policies.
When I buy laptops for my business, I always get the three-year, next day on-site, complete care type warranties. Worth every penny. I've had IBM repair laptops where an employee's child ripped a key off the keyboard. They've repaired laptops that an employee knocked off a hotel bed or dropped in an airport.

I had no idea it was that much. Last I saw I thought it was around $60 a year or so. I will say that at least the Directv one does not expire but at that cost I guess I would go for the CC plan.

In my 7+ years with DirecTV, I haven't had a receiver fail or need a repair. I would have paid hundreds of dollars to DirecTV for nothing. I have 6 active receivers and still don't feel the repair plan is worth it.

I still feel it is a customer's responsibility to read the fine print in such purchases, but salesmen like this really piss me off.
I absolutely feel the same way.
If I feel conned, or if I feel that the salesperson has little idea about the product being sold, I won't buy it. In your case, lady400, I hope you noted your experience to the salesperson's manager.
Fortunately, I have had a mostly positive experience about my high tech purchases from Circuit City.
But enough of a commerical for 'em... ;)
Others here in this same thread feel that the plans by either CC or D* may not ne worth it. That may make some sense, given their previous experience with how reliable the TiVo and DirecTiVo units may be.
Me? I've been reading these threads before deciding to be among the first waves of HD TiVo users, and I think getting one of the CC plans makes a whole lot of sense to me.
$65 more to protect a one thousand dollar new toy...? You bet.

I think this has been mentioned in another thread, but by using my Amex card, the original warranty is extended by one year.
Reading the manual on the HR10-250,
"For one year from the purchase date, at the option of DIRECTV, the DIRECTV HD DVR will be repaired or replaced with a new, repaired, refurbished or comparable product (whichever is deemed necessary) if it becomes defective or inoperative. This exchange is done without charge to you for parts and labor."
That means that by using my Amex card, I have a two year warranty on the receiver at no additional cost.

A brand-spanking-new SD DTivo is $99 or less anyplace you look. Once you pay one Tivo fee all other receivers are just the $5 mirroring fee each month. Makes no sense to have any non-Tivos at these prices.
But my point was, it may cost you $1000 to replace an HDTivo but only $99 to replace a SD DTivo - I would assume a lot less for a non-Tivo box. And I bet if you called customer service or retention and told them you wanted them to remove a box from service, when they ask why tell them it failed out of warranty. I would guess they would make you a nice offer to replace that box rather that have to turn off that part of your service.
Homeowner's insurance will pay for one lightning damaged or stolen.
D* only gets $6 to cover all you stuff if you DO NOT have any DVRs, $8 if you have any.

New SD TiVo's may be $99, but consider that includes another year of being locked in to DirecTV, and homeowners insurance policies have deductibles.
Wasn't this thread supposed to be about HR10-250s being available at CC? How'd we get off track? :)

I got a confirmation email, but no ship yet. :( Admittedly, my order didn't go in until 4:17 EST according to CC's web site. Did anyone else not get a shipping confirmation? I'm guessing there may have been a 4pm deadline for shipping.
I called them and they said I'm confirmed for an in-stock unit.

Everytime I goto Circuitcity.com, I never see them for sale. I call and call and call CC. I am always told that they are not getting any till Next month. I am just unlucky I guess. I have been waiting months for one of these. My DirecTV installer said he will have them this week or next week. I hope so. I can't wait for my HR10-250.

I didn't get shipping info, either. I was not at all surprised, I also ordered late in the window of availability. We simply missed the "ship same day" cutoff. I am sure we will see shipping info on Monday.

I'm one step behind you -- I never got a confirmation email, and the web site shows nothing about my order except that it HAS been ordered. However, like you, I did call them and they confirmed that it will be shipping on Monday, so I'll take their word for it ...

Don't feel bad -- you're not alone. I've been monitoring the Circuit City website (seemingly) almost every waking minute for the last month, and after repeatedly reading stories here about people literally falling into a stack of them as they walk into various stores, *I* felt like the unluckiest guy in the world.
Perseverance pays off though, as I managed to get into the CC window that opened on Friday. So, just keep monitoring this board and lady luck WILL eventually come your way. As others have said, we are very close to the end of the drought on these things, and you should be able to easily pick one up very soon.

If you have difficulty constantly monitoring the CC website, as I did, use a software solution. I downloaded a freeware web monitoring program to do the work for me. The one I used is WebMon, available here . You can set the product page to be monitored for changes. It has various options for alerting you.
I installed this on my home PC, but my company is very strict on downloads to the PC's at work. I solved this by also downloading a command line emailer, here . After learning the command line switches for a simple email, I set WebMon to execute this command when the web page updated. This email notification is what alerted me at work in time to make my CC purchase.
One note on WebMon and the CC page...at first it gave me many "false positives", indications of an update that was not an availability change (something on that product page changes a lot). This utility also has a feature to limit the change alert to only certain sections of the page. It will present the page source, and a search for "availability" will guide you to correct portion of the code to monitor. The "false alerts" were reduced by a significant margin, although not completely eliminated.
Others may have posted even simpler methods.
Worked great for me. It's a bit of work to set it all up, but not much if you really want to catch that CC window. ;)

Thanks lady400. I'll give it a go. I am in the IT dept at work, so running it there is not an issue for me.

Anyway the point is they are a waste of money, see http://www.consumerreports.org/main...D=1087692100379
So if you purchase one you are an idiot just like I was. I figure since they won't honor it I'll waste their time with it, and they ALWAYS have to come on Saturday, just as an overtime bonus for me.
I'm assuming that UE is Ultimate Electronics (which is SoundTrack in Colorado). If not, stop reading as the rest of this won't apply.
Your problem seems odd. I have dealt with UE/SoundTrack for my high-end equipment needs since 1990. I buy extended warranties based on a percentage value of the cost of the item and my assessment of how easily it may break down. Some of the extended warrantys have been a bust and some have really paid off. Overall, I think I've chosen wisely.
SoundTrack has a lemon policy. The numbers and terms have changed over the years, but in the early 90s I purchased a Pioneer Elite LaserDisc player that ran close to $1k. The extended 5 year was comp'd to $99 and I took it. The LD player was flawless for 4 years, then the transport that auto-reversed to play the B side without flipping the disc stopped working, so off to repair it went. About a week after getting it back from repair it broke again, so back it went. And again a third time after working for about 6 weeks. On the 3rd return to SoundTrack, the manager pulled up my warranty contract and said that if the repair shop found it to be the same problem again, I was getting a new one because of the Lemon clause. My clause said if I had to get the same repair 3x in 1 year during the contract, the unit would be replaced. And it was, but after 4 years, that model was no longer available, so I got the newest, latest, greatest Pioneer Elite LD player.
Ok, so long story short, check your UE/ST extended warranty contract for the Lemon Clause. If you have it, claim it after you hit the number of repairs required.

It probably would not get wet. Cardboard can absorb a lot of moisture not to mention the Tivo will be in another box inside and wrapped in plastic.

Well I can't speak on any experience involving the AMEX extended warranty plan and a HDTivo, but I do know that they (AMEX) won't screw you, based on personal experience. Back in the day, I used my AMEX to purchase a Nokia 8890 cell phone; needless to say, it went bad. I used the AMEX plan to cash in and get myself a Motorola phone (no, it wasn't as "sexy" as the 8890 but was comparable in function, plus I decided that I didn't want to deal with the display issues notorious with the 8890); not only was I able to do so, AMEX even gave me a refund check for the difference in cost between the Moto and the Nokia.
So...yeah, YMMV but I just wanted to point out that I was able to collect on my AMEX warranty.

Hey now! A tracking number finally appeared on my order this morning. Sweet! Now the ironic part -- according to Abt Electronics, where I have one pre-ordered for $899 out-the-door (no tax, no shipping), they will "more than likely" be able to ship that to me next week. ARRRRRGGHH! I *was* planning on cancelling that, but with a net savings of $175 in the balance, I'll have to let the Circuit City unit sit in the box for a week or so to see if it really does arrive. I don't want to crack the seal in case I need to return it.
I tell ya, the drama surrounding this machine would make a great book. :D

That's it. Just enter "HR10250" in the search field at the top. You won't be able to order one though, unless you happen to get there when one of the "windows of opportunity" opens up. There was one on June 3rd, and again this past Friday (June 25th).

And again this morning. Either some that ordered Friday were cancelled or had their cards declined - or they got a few more in.

I had one pre-ordered from Hi-Fi Buys (Tweeter) for $800, but they haven't come in yet. I brought the receipts over to my local Circuit City, and they gave me $219 back ($199 plus 10% of the difference)!!!! (But I used $65 of that to buy the 3 year warranty)

They really honored that? DAMN!
I have one pre-ordered from Sound Advice (Tweeter) for $799 and was contemplating ordering from CC when the window opened, but didn't think they'd honor the price match as it said that it was for 'advertised' prices only. How'd you make it happen?
Jeff
Posted by: turls
unixadm, had you actually paid for the HiFi Buys unit ahead of time? I also plan on using any savings I get to pay for the 3 year warranty. I still have to drive 45 miles to do this though. Did you have to have the unit with you (open or unopened?), or just your CC and HiFi Buys receipt?
I have not received the e-mail receipt yet from CC, even though my unit is being delivered today (1 day shipment GROUND from Earth City, MO :) ), so I'm not sure what they will want. I need to be prepared for battle if I drive all that way ;)
Posted by: unixadm
I had put $200 down on the Hi-Fi Buy's (Tweeter) HR10-250. The receipt showed the price as $800 plus $69 for a 3 year extended warranty, with $200 down and $7xx balance.
My local CC honored it without a problem. I had purchased a 51" HDTV in that Circuit City a couple of months ago....and had all kinds of problems with the purchase price, rebate, etc. I ended up dealing with the manager for the purchase back then.
Yesterday, I called and asked for that manager and they said he was in but with a customer. So I went in armed with all my receipts (Emailed receipts from CC order on Friday and Hi-Fi Buy receipt), as well as the return policy from the CC website.......I even brought the Sealed box with me (although I left it in the car)....ready for battle.
I asked for the manager but they said he was in an interview with someone. I explained to the girl the situation and she said "No problem, I can take care of that for you", and she processed the refund. The only thing she wanted was a copy of the receipt from Hi-Fi buys with the model number on it, which I had.
A friend of mine did the pre-order and also got in on the window at CC. His arrives today, and we will go tonight and make sure that he gets the CC refund.
(Then we both have to go to Hi-Fi Buys to cancel our pre-order and get our $200 each back)
The big ammunition that I was going to use with the manager if it came down to it was the fact that they have a 30 day return policy. If they had refused to give me price match, I would have made it known to the manager that I would be opening the HR10-250, using it until the one showed up at Hi-Fi Buys (approx 2 weeks), then returning the unit to Circuit City. They would have to give me my money back, so I would have full use of the unit for a couple of weeks and they would be stuck with an open box unit.
I think it will come down to a local store's policies and manager's discrecion. I got lucky that the girl at the Service desk was very friendly and happy to take care of the issue without making a big deal of it (and that the manager wasn't available).
It is the same as when the HDVR2 came out. Many Circuit Cities matched the price of the receipts that were posted here, while others did not.

Unixadm,
Would you be willing to post a copy of your receipt with Tweeter so we all can go to CC?
Too much to ask?
Posted by: turls
Thanks unixadm. I agree, they pretty much have their hands tied. It will be a hassle for me to return a unit if I get another one in the mean time, and the other problem is I'm not sure I'll have another unit in 30 days.
Posted by: unixadm
Since it has my name and address on it as part of the receipt as well as the order number, I don't think I should post a copy,. Also, my local CC took a copy of my receipt, so my guess is that if people all start coming in with copies of the same receipt, it may cause an issue (specifically for me and my local CC). I definitely don't want to burn any bridges with my local CC manager! (Remember the problems some people had at CC with the HDVR2 receipt copies?).
Since my friend is going to CC tonight to do the same thing, he said that if they don't take a copy of his Hi-Fi Buys receipt, we can post it with his name blocked out.

If people wonder WHY some stores give folks a hard time about e-receipts or price matching, this explains why.
I've never had a problems with the few times I get a price match with CC, but they do not have to match prices for online retailers... The overhead is far different than that of a bricks and mortar store.
Also, the price match is based on whether a LOCAL competitor has the same product IN STOCK at the lower price. If that's the case, no problem.
This prevents a store in Manhattan, for example, with higher day to day costs, from having to price match a competitor operating in a less costly part of the country.
Yeah, I know, you bought it on line, but you're going to ask your local Circuit City store to take the hit.
So I think using a copy of the Hi-Fi Buys receipt, is borderline unethical.
Hey, its your conscience. And I have no doubt a lot of you will offer all sorts of justifications.
But I'll pass on this. I wouldn't feel right about it.
However, if your local CC DOESN'T match the price, are you prepared to return the HR10250?
Posted by: dwynne
I had one pre-ordered from Tweeter for $900 + tax. I just called and canceled it yesterday - which now means I have canceled ALL of my pre-orders.
I was able to get one from 6thAve last week for $999.06 which made it about $15 more than the one from Tweeter - and they have no idea when they will get any in.
I would agree that using a copy of receipt from someone else would basically be fraud. Besides the price policy is if you find it advertised someplace else for less it also says it has to be in stock. So on that basis even carrying in the receipt they should have denied the price match request.

You think this is unethical? I have absolutely no idea how you could think that. Unixadm preordered at one store, got it from another store first, and asked the second store to match the preorder price he personally had received. How is that unethical...at all....in any way?
Stores pricematch preorder prices all of the time, and his local CC takes NO hit for doing the pricematch since the CSR had to put the HDTivo into their system first to give out the $200 refund. Plus he bought the extended warranty! Stores love selling those. That store will have better SPRs for this period with Unixadm's return/rebuy/refund and extended warranty.
Anyone who worries about their conscience for something as insignificant as a possible pricebreak on a Tivo has a lot of other baggage that they should probably deal with.

I think he was talking about people taking a copy of the receipt off the internet and going to CC claiming that it was theirs and they were buying it from another store when clearly they are not.

Using a receipt to obtain a refund to which you are not legally entitled to could open you up to criminal charges (read fraud/larceny) and civil liability. Of course this depends on the laws of your particular state. Hardly appropriate posting for this forum.

There is nothing illegal about asking a store to price match another store.
If I go in with a receipt from another store and say "A friend of mine purchased this for cheaper, here is his receipt....would you price match it?", how is that fraud?
It is their policy that they will match a competitors price. It is their policy that you have 30 days to return for a full refund. If I use their policies to request a price match, it is at the manager's discrecion whether he/she decides to give it to me. What law did I break when I asked for a price match? If they don't give me the price match, and I decide to return it in 2 weeks after the other one comes in, what law did I break?
Everyone has the right to ask a store to give them a better price to keep their business.....and the store has a right to refuse or grant the request. If the store grants the request, then the person IS legally entitled to the refund..... there is nothing illegal about it.
Now, if I go in with a gun and tell them they have to price match the receipt, then I could see being in legal trouble ;)

How could it be fraud if the receipt wasn't fabricated? I'm curious since that's the essence of price matching policies offered by major retailers. What allows a customer to be legally not entitled to a refund?
After all the store is offering to match the price. They aren't bound by federal law to match the price of any receipt you bring in. It's a judgment call on their part on whether they want to match the price. It's purely voluntary.

I don't think so. The store is free to match or not match as they choose. It is no more "fraud" when a store advertises a discount off MSRP, knowing full well that they had never sold it for MSRP. You might think it unethical, but I don't see that any law is being broken.
Let's face it. Other than being victims of shoplifting, merchants as a rule are guilty of victimizing customers far more often than the reverse.
Just to defuse any flames coming my way for stating what should be obvious to anyone older than 12, I do not condone misrepresentation by anyone for any reason. I'm just saying that in this case, at least, it probably isn't illegal. Any more than the used car salesman who says he has an offer for more than you have offered and his buyer is coming back to put down a deposit. Sure! :D

Wow.
Generalize much?
There's something I found out about the HD TiVo thru CC. They do NOT have any plans to place them in stores.
It will be a web-only purchase.
The stores do not have any inventory, and do not have any data in their systems at the store level to order them, make adjustments, or replace them.
If you return a unit, the company plan is to return them right back to the manufacturer. So a store will not have any open box units at discounted prices.
I mention this because the local stores will soon not be able to do any price adjustments on this.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the Circuit City price match plan applies to price matching items the store carries with a local brick and mortar retailer that actually has the unit in stock.
If the store has no inventory data on the item (and they don't) they cannot do a price match.
If the competitor's price quoted is from an on-line retailer, the price match does not apply.
If the local competitor does not currently have the item in stock at the time you are seeking the price match (and how many do?), the price match would not apply.
And a special deal or package from a competitor is not eligible to be matched: the price match has to be from a regular sale price, available to everyone.
The CC web site spells out the details:
---
Circuit City's Price Match Plus Guarantees
Online Price Match Plus Guarantee
Nothing's worse than paying too much. That's why we do everything in our power to make sure you don't pay a penny more than you should for anything you buy at Circuit City. If you've seen a lower advertised price from a local store with the same item in stock, we want to know about it. Bring it to our attention, and we'll gladly beat their price by 10% of the difference. Even after your Circuit City purchase, if you see a lower advertised price (including our own sale prices) within 30 days, we'll refund 110% of the difference.
Our policy applies only to advertised prices. It does not apply to special offers or promotions, including rebates, free-with-purchase offers and special financing. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide price matches online, so please visit the closest Circuit City store in order to take advantage of our Price Match Plus Guarantee.
----
So I hope with all the on line receipts flying back and forth, no one has driven out of their way to be disappointed.
The internet is a great way for misinformation, and opinion presented a fact, to be communicated at the speed of light.
If you do find a better deal on line, by all means go for it. Return your unit to CC, or BB, or whomever.
Then we'll have more refurbished units available in case ours gives us problems. :D

The stores do not have any inventory, and do not have any data in their systems at the store level to order them, make adjustments, or replace them.
I mention this because the local stores will soon not be able to do any price adjustments on this.
Well, you are wrong on several counts...
1. My local Circuit City (North Point, GA) got 140 of these in last week...and they told me that they were gone in less than 2 hours. They ARE getting them in.....it is is just that the inventory hasn't gotten to most of the stores yet.
2. They ARE in their computer. I had them look it up.
3. My local Circuit City DID price match. I gave them the receipt from Hi--Fi Buys on my pre-order, gave them my online receipt for the CC purchase, and they instantly looked up the order and credited my Visa the difference (they even gave me 110% of the difference).
It is at a stores discrecion.....yes, they could deny the price match....it doesn't meet up with their specific criteria for a price match, but some stores would rather grant the price match to keep the customers happy and keep them coming back.

My local store spoke with corporate planning while I was right there. These units are to be strictly web only. A few shipments got placed in the wrong part of their warehouse, and ended up being shipped to a few stores, but that has (supposedly) been corrected. I just wanted to correct an expectation that others may get from reading your posts that they may soon see HD TiVo at the local store. At this point, their business plan is WEB ONLY.

The stores may find items in corporate inventory, but unless those items have been specifically downloaded into the local store system, they cannot order them or do any adjustments. Since your store was one of the very few that received an order by mistake (see above,) the info on those units may have to been downloaded. I suspect your store now has a block on any special orders from the store level. All CC stores now have some software block that prevents this unit from being ordered at the store level. There was a thread that mentioned this:

You mentioned an issue you had with a previous purchase, and I suspect the store would have been happy to accomodate you in this instance. But just because a business case can be made in a specific instance, does not mean that everyone can expect that.

Look, I don't want to get into some sort of contest with you. I just want to make sure everyone understands that just because CC did something with one customer down in North Point, GA, does not mean that they can expect the same in their situation.
So my thought is, don't feel slighted if the Price Match policy is interpreted as it is written. You aren't being singled out. CC will gladly take the HD TiVo back, and credit your account.
Me? I'm glad I have mine now. I could have waited until the price came down....
Oh, who am I kidding? Wait? Me?

Why do you have a problem with generalizing? Generalizing is the product of deductive reasoning. All kinds of great thinkers have generalized. It is when the facts don't support the generalization that there is a problem.
Since retailers have the goods, and consumers have the money that the retailer wants, the opportunity to victimize consumers is there. The reverse is not true. I'm not saying that consumers are necessarily more virtuous than retailers. I'm saying that there are far more opportunities for a retailer to take advantage of a consumer than the reverse.
If you have an issue with my generalization, then it is only because your own generalization is in conflict with mine. If my generalization were in conformity with yours, you would most likely have remained silent, correct?
Generalize much?;)

Yikes. Where are you shopping? I have to avoid those stores.
In this market driven economy, it is much better business to be ethical. Consumers have many outlets for products. If a product is in short supply in the near term, other vendors will get more, or soon have a competing product.
If I buy from a store, and get a good product and am treated well, I will return. The smart business operator realizes that retail is a two way exchange, of money for goods, and for that exchange to continue, both sides must receive something of value.
Retail is not an arena where one side has a disproportionate advantage. All sorts of other alternatives exist. So if a consumer feels slighted, then the consumer goes elsewhere.
And that will harm a business a lot more than most people suspect.

Your presumtion that simply because it is good business to behave ethically has led you to a naive conclusion. People can be ethical or not. Businesses are neither ethical nor unethical. Their raison d'etre is to make a profit, not to make friends. If making enemies makes more money than making friends, then businesses that survive will make enemies.
Yes, consumers have many choices to buy where they get the best deal. That does not mean that they cannot be fleeced by a clever and unscrupulous person who has no ethics other than to accumulate as much money as possible. Bear in mind the operative word "person."
Ever hear the words, "Let the buyer beware?" Or, "A fool and his money are soon parted?" Sellers defrauding and otherwise scamming buyers is hardly a rare phenomenon. But other than by stealing product or failing to pay his bill, I'm really not sure how a buyer can defraud a seller. Not such a radical idea that sellers are in a far better position to defraud buyers than the reverse.
You may be correct that most businesses are honest, but the ethic that motivates that "honesty" is the profit motive. Circuit City peddles the heck out of a bogus product: The additional guarantee for additional money.
They know their profit on these products is HUGE, and their sales clerks are under great pressure to sell them for that reason. Yet these same clerks try to persuade you that their motivation for selling them is that they are really looking out for your best interests and not their own.
By the way, lest you think I'm some sort of anti-business zealot, I am a retired business owner--an elecrical contractor who at one time employed over 50 electricians. Politically, I am a staunch Libertarian.
At 71, I think I may have been around the block a few more times than most on this forum.:D
