Right hand turns, at Indy! (Formula One)

Jackie Stewart was just on... I had a poster of him in 7th grade :)
Love the course, they'll do, what, I almost think 230 down the straight. I think the record is 228.

Wishing I was there. :(

Is there a reason why they do right turns for Formula One... and left turns for IRL and NASCAR ?

Because F 1 runs on road course and street course, not just (or mostly) ovals like NASCAR or IRL. F1 will have left turns AND right turns.
What make the F1 race at Indy "special" is that a portion of the road course runs down the main track, but it runs "backwards". They will turn through a section of the main track making a right hand turn.

Here's hoping Takuma Sato doesn't blow an engine and Honda gives Ferrari a run for their money. :)

BAR fan? Didn't realize there was such a thing ;)
Seriously though, I've not followed the series this season as much as I have the past few. Where is BAR's increased performance coming from, their new driver lineup or from the technology? Interesting that Jacques couldn't get these type of results very often.

Or do something stupid like run into another car when you are in third place! :o
I'm a Ferrari fan, but also root for BAR Honda.
dschwab their better results are from a better car. I'm not really sure how Honda did it. In off season testing they were blowing engines like crazy. They even "took a break" and went back to Japan to redo the engine. I guess it worked. Jacques, IMO, would have gotten similar results this year with this car. I like Sato, but Jacques is a better driver.

It was weird... in off-season it almost looked like they were testing mclaren/mercedes engines. :D Then pulled it together just in time for the season.
As far as Nurburgring: Yeah yeah yeah... *sigh* I had to pause the TiVo and yell at the screen for a bit on that one. Sato had fresh tires, had outbraked him, and (mistakenly) thought Barrichello saw him in his mirrors. Oh well. I'm almost over it.
BTW - Anyone heard any news of Forumula One in HD? I watch it on my 110" front projection screen which is awesome (especially the in-car camera shots), but would really appreciate it in a higher resolution.

What network is this race going to be on?

Speed Channel 12:30 ET.

I highly recommend a season pass if you enjoy it. The season pass will pick up the practice session two days before the race (usually 1h), the qualifying session the day before (usually 1.5h), and then the actual race with a 15 minute Q&A press session with the top three drivers afterwards (usually 2.5h). I understand they've increased the coverage this weekend because it's a "home game".
TiVo is perfect for this sort of sport because most of the races are around 4 in the morning over here in the western hemisphere. :)

I am a very casual fan of F1, I am a little dissapointed that Jacques Villeneuve is not racing.

There were some rumors going around a couple of months ago that he was talking with BMW Williams for next year. I never heard any more about it.

A co-worker has been going to this event the last couple years. Last year, he left me a voice mail on one of the qualification days that basically said "Listen to this." and he held the phone up as an F1 car screamed by. Cool stuff.

At Indy... the F1 drivers are afraid of hitting the wall at speed. By going "backwards" they go through the speedway turn at a much lower speed than if they went the other way. The first turn at the end of the speedway straight is a sharp right with plenty of run-off if they misjudge braking.
Interesting that a few years ago announcers asked F1 drivers if they would ever consider racing the Indy 500. Without exception they replied no, it's way too dangerous. They didn't want to mess with the wall.

I think Williams would be better off with Webber and Davidson than bringing Princess Jack back into the game. Ralf's accident threw that all out the window, it will be interesting to see who gets his ride for the next couple of races (My guess is he won't be back for England either).
On the Ralf note, SPEED covered his accident much better than the on track monitors did. Our seats are right at the 50m braking sign into Turn 1 so we couldn't see the car directly. The 'trons at the track never showed the footage of Ralf moving right after the accident that SPEED did. All we got to see was a trashed Williams with a non-moving yellow helmet, we were really beginning to think he may have been seriously hurt or killed. It wasn't until after they had moved him over to the back board that they showed the replay of him trying to get out of the car by himself before any of the med people showed up. That would have made us fans much less worried if we could have seen that about 15 minutes earlier.

Yeah... talk about a gut-wrenching moment.. well, SEVERAL moments.. did they ever say what took them so damn long to get the medical crew out there? I can't imagine what Michael was going through as they drove through there on the safety car laps. Glad he's okay.

Yeah, the in car shots of Michael looking over that the wreckage each time he went by were quite moving.
FIA has came out and said they don't think there were any problems and that they feel that they responded rather quickly. I think that's BS and there in no reason why it should take 2.5-3 minutes for Sid to reach a stranded driver.

They should think again, now that they have the SAFER barriers there.

Too bad Ralf missed the safter barrier by 15 ft or so, it would have been nice how much it would have helped him.

WRC Rally of Turkey starts tomorrow... nice if you want left turns, right turns, gravel slides, bumps, jumps, drivers who do their own in-course repairs.. in cars that at least superficially look like models you can buy. :) Just with some 'upgrades'.
I think SpeedTV has overview coverage of it on Sun Jun 27 at 9:30pm.

heh... I'll definitely be checking that out. WRC cracks me up. It's like, I know they're "in control" sort of, but when you see that steering wheel flying around and it doesn't correspond to ANYTHING that's going on outside the windows, it just makes me giggle. Also the co-pilot guy who's looking at his lap yelling out 'long easy right'.. 'hard left'.. It's definitely a motorsport unto it's own. :D

It is quite amusing... the wheel can be a bit crazy, but that's what happens when you're on gravel/snow/rocks/broken tarmac and not smooth well-maintained fenced off tracks. :)
Sometimes the codrivers get to have some fun too.. I have a nice clip of the driver yelling "GET THE TOOLS!" A few moments later you see the codriver ratcheting the center bolt of the steering wheel down.
Typically they use terms more like "long 4 right 80 into 3 left bad camber into 2 right slippy!" assuming they're speaking english.. I think it's cool though. The drivers are going so fast on these tiny roads there's no way they could go so quick around blind turns without someone telling them what's up ahead. Often they're on cliff edges etc..
That's one reason I really like the Colin McRae Rally series of games.. they pacenotes are actually good.
If anyone wants to see some interesting short WRC rally videos (edited to music), let me know and I'll send you a PM.

I like when they have a camera down in the drives foot well and you can see just how quickly they are making steering, brake, and throttle inputs. There is no way in the world I could react that fast. I guess that's why they do it for a living and I just watch it on TV. :)
