Real Money Hump Day TC Forum Poker Tournament!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: JohnJr
Hi guys,
Per this post, this Wednesday we will have a real money tournament. Hopefully we can continue to have these weekly.
The details of this weeks tournament are $10+$1 buy-in ($11 total), Limit Hold-Em. With 3-27 players the prize distribution is 1st place 50%, 2nd place 30% and 3rd place 20% of the total entrant fees ($10 x # of entrants). There are no re-buys and no add-ons.
There will be a 5 minute break after each hour of play, and the Tournament will start at 9:05 PM Eastern on Wednesday on www.pokerstars.com
We must have a minimum of 3 players (already have 4 signed up), and there is no maximum. So if you want to play, feel free!
If anyone needs help getting real money into Poker Stars, and won't yell at me when they lose it all, and has a method of making online money transfers (IE. Paypal), then PM me for help.

I'll see about transferring some money tonight so I can join you all.
Posted by: Turtleboy
I have a condo board meeting earlier, but I'm (probably) in.

9:05pm? If so, can't make it... otherwise I'd be there!

Yup, PM unsuited. :(
If too many people have problems with either day or time, it can be moved next week.

Well, I just signed up. I'm probably in over my head with this crowd but what the heck it should be fun.
I transferred enough to do 5 of these tourneys at the $10 + $1 level.
I was the 7th to join so the prize pool is up to $70
Posted by: Turtleboy
I just signed up too.
So people don't have to go elsewhere to search for it, the password is
pancake.

Excellent turnout so far...
I'd vote for it to be either an hour later or earlier next time, probably earlier to help our east coast friends.

Later wouldn't help much.. :)
Being limit, if we get lots of people, I might end up bailing early if this goes past midnight eastern, since that's past my bedtime ;)

Hey guys. I've got an obligation that will keep me busy until close to 9pm. Its a toss-up whether I make it or not. But, i hope so. I really look forward to taking some money off you chumps.
Ooops did, I type that out loud? I meant getting together with the boys. It'll be like a virtual Vegas reunion.
Posted by: Marco
Dead Money walking, here.
Stupid question ...
I'd be risking a maximum of $11 under this format?
Posted by: JohnJr
Yuppers, Marco. Come play! Last I looked we were up to 9 people, so the prize pool is now at $90.

Can you expand on where this table is at?
Pokerstars. Under tourneys? Sit & Gos? Where?
Posted by: JohnJr
www.pokerstars.com under the "tourney" tab, "private" tab, and look for "Wednesday Hump Day Poker Game (TCF)."
EDIT: When I say www.pokerstars.com I mean you download and run the client software from there, and then within the client software you go to the Private Tourney area.
-John
Posted by: NatasNJ
I don't recall seeing a PRIVATE tab. But I will check tonight.
If I need someone to front me $11 bucks (I can paypal them)
who is offering to do so?
I don't have money online right now and it will take a few days to get my account funded again.

If you haven't been to pokerstars lately, they have tabs under the types of games now, like for Ring games, they have Limit/No Limit/Play Money, and for Tourney's they have, a bunch of tabs with the far right one being private.
I think private is a new tab that was added the last month or so.

Will we be able to watch if we don't play?
Posted by: JohnJr
That's a good question. There is a private table tourney, that I am not registered for, starting in 51 minutes. I will see if I can observe the table and report back here.
-John
Posted by: JohnJr
The answer appears to be yes. You can "observe" a private table tournament, so anyone that would like to watch, can!
-John
Posted by: kdaveler
I won't be able to play tonight, home sick, and I will be out of town next week but I want to be in the loop.
Have fun guys and Thanks John for setting it up!

Yes, it looks like you can chat, too, as an observer.
This Hungarian guy typed something, I typed "?", and he corrected himself. :D

Ken,
Hope you feel better soon! Feel free to watch tonight, if you are so inclined. Breacagan actually set it up, I'm just the "advertising agent." ;)

Ohh, voyeurs!! :)

I'll probably watch, and I'll be interested in playing in the future but I don't think I'll have time to play tonight.
Posted by: loswald
I havent the slightest idea on how to play, so I'll probably watch....Is there a place I can go "practice" with play money?

The same place has play money tables.

Loswald...
www.pokerroom.com
www.pokerpages.com
Also most other sites have a freeroll area (PartyPoker has one) but the two I mentioned are a good place to start working on your game...

Hi Vegas poker buddies and all,
This sounds fun but I won't be able to join tonight (taking my fiance to the airport), but since she'll be out of town for a bit, I'll likely be available for future tournaments. 6pm Pacific is a little early for me (usually I'm still tied up with that time) but will try to make it next week if this is a success and becomes a weekly affair.
JohnJr, I'll write you separately for help with a transfer; I do have PayPal.
--Stephen
Posted by: JohnJr
Stephen,
If you know you won't be playing until next week, but feel you would like to play these real money tournies, you may want to look into www.neteller.com where you can begin funding an online account that will accept gambling transactions. It normally does take a good week or more to get the account set up and funded.
I'll be happy to help in the short term with the paypal transfers, but in the long run it will be far better if you (or anyone interested in playing real money) works on setting up their own neteller account.
Look forward to seeing you in the game next week!
I'm not sure what we can do about times, as of course the East Coast folks are having to stay up late, while the West Coast folks are having to start earlier than convenient. 7PM Mountain Time, just about happens to be a perfect time for me. ;)
Maybe the solution would be to move the game to a weekend?
-John
Posted by: smak
For me, i'm still at work, unless I just sneak out, so the possible length of it might be a problem, especially if we get to fill 2 tables or more...
That length would also bother an east coaster, if they're having to play past 11 or 12.
So in conclusion, i have no idea!
We can change it every other week, but if we can come up with the perfect time that everybody can join in, that be best.

I'm aruond, fellas, but unfortunately, on a dialup, so I might have lag :)
As far as the times - maybe we move this weekly game to Sunday evening/afternoon, say 7pm Eastern 4 Pacific but on Sunday...
Thoughts?

Getting close now.
Ya'll should be afraid, very afraid. I TiVo'd the "Nutcracker" and that's what I'll be watching, er, doing tonight! ;)

Maui,
I have one question from the tourney... there was the one hand where you called Breacagans bet on the river... $1200, and he won with T high? Ya'll may have chatted about it, but I missed the chat. Ya'll were heads up at that point.
-John
Posted by: MacThor
That was a good time. I like Pokerstars' interface, although it was timing me out awfully quick (twice with group 1 hands). Sorry but I could not get out of the PSO tourney running simultaneously. I need to improve my online "2-at-a-time" game -- for some reason it seemed like when I got a playable hand in one tourney I was already in a hand in the other.
Posted by: JohnJr
Mac,
I can't play two games at once, period. I always imagine those chess masters playing 13 games at once... I am not them.
-John

K, at the break, I'm in 29th position now... 271 players left.

Welp, I'm out... probably some stupid plays... but final hand I was all-in AQ, vs AT and 77... T flopped.

Yes, that was a strange hand.
Here it is:
Tournament level - 600/1200
Preflop: Breacagan is Button and posts a blind of 300. Maui is BB and posts a blind of 600.
Breacagan raises, BB (Maui) calls. (4 SB)
Flop: 6h, 2h, 9c
Maui bets, Breacagan calls. (6 SB)
Turn: Jh
Maui bets, Breacagan raises, Maui calls. (7 BB)
River: 6d
Maui checks, Breacagan bets, Maui calls. (9 BB)
Results in white below:
Breacagan shows Tc 8s (one pair, sixes).
Maui mucks 7c 8d (one pair, sixes).
Outcome: Breacagan wins 9 BB.
If you can't beat a bluff, just calling doesn't work. However, the pot is big, and it may be worth a bluff to try to win it. Here are two lines that probably would have worked in this case:
- Bet when the scare card hits on the river. You'll at least beat other busted draws out of the pot, although opponents with a piece of the board will probably call.
- Check-raise the river. It's gutsy, but you might get your opponent to lay down second pair, or possibly even top pair, weak kicker.
If you're not up to either of these, a fold is better than a call. It's definitely a raise-or-fold situation.
Posted by: JohnJr
I remember the other... probably stupid on my part... KJo in the SB, re-raised 3xBB raise from 1 before cut-off, to 6xBB ($4800). Flop is AQ9. I'm in early position (sucks!), I bet out $8,000... He raises all-in to $10,000, I call another $2k... he had A7 or something. That was a pretty big hit.
-John
Posted by: Breacagan
Ugh.
I did like your move with AQ on your final hand, though. I saw that one. Your opponent made a horrible call and got very lucky. You had an excellent chance to recover a lot of your losses from the previous hand. (Was the penultimate hand AA vs. AK? I missed that one.)

I had the 7 & 8 for the open ended straight draw after the flop. I should have been more aggressive after the river as Byron says to try and take the pot after I missed the straight. I definitely should have bet at the pot if I was planning to call his bet. I played it much too passively and seeing his hand I maybe could have gotten him to fold had I been more aggressive.
Bottom line - I choked :D
Posted by: JohnJr
Those are the only two big hands I remember, But I did go from 27T chips to 0, very fast.
The AA I posted above was a huge double up for me... 13K chips (decent) in early position... I just raised $400... somebody called, LP reraises $3k... I rereraise all-in. He called with QQ. My AA held up. Busted him.
-John
Posted by: JohnJr
Maui,
Thanks for explaining... you understand our horror at your call on the river? If a T high beats you, that means you had virtually nothing, and you should have either raised or folded on the river. Raise on the bluff, or fold because you are beat. A call there is only good if you think your opponent has a 7 or lower... :D
-John
Posted by: Maui
Yep, I screwed up.
If I had any poker savey or courage I would have bet the river to try and take it.
I still consider myself a bit of a newbie in comparison to you all (i know I play much less) so I do still make really silly mistakes.
But I'm a learnin' as quick as I can :)
I will say that despite that hand I consider this Tourney to be one of the most aggressive showings I have had and one of the better played ones.
Posted by: JohnJr
You did very well, Maui... and please just take my comments as constructive criticism. And call me Mr. 10th place. ;)
-John
Posted by: Maui
Oh absolutely I take all comments as constructive criticism. They don't bother me at all. I don't know how anyone else ranks me among the regular players here but I personally rank myself below all the regulars and many of the semi-regulars so I am not above taking well intended constructive criticism at all.
Anything to get better.
Posted by: Breacagan
quote:

Here is some excellent learning material: "The Eight Mistakes in Poker" by David Sklansky
I used to check the river too often when I missed my draws. Then I read this article and realized the importance of Mistake No. 1. I'll still check the river when I miss my draws against players incapable of laying down bottom pair, but against stronger players, I will very often bet the river with nothing.
In fact, you'll sometimes hear poker commentators talking about a player catching a good card on the end and getting enough of a hand that they can just check the river. This is precisely the situation the commentators are talking about. On the end, you should be much more inclined to bet a hand that is very weak than one that is just barely strong enough to show down.
quote:

I was impressed by your aggression, and it says a lot for your learning so far that you realize that this is one of the keys to successful play.
Posted by: JohnJr
I rank you #2... until next week. ;) Very good game, Tom.
-John
Posted by: Maui
What I should really do is go over the heads up with Byron. He had the big stack and after a few hands I knew that only luck was going to get me back in the game.
He continually put me to the test by always coming in for a raise pre-flop and making me decide whether the 10 8 (pretty typical of my starting hands heads up) was worth calling a raise with. When I led out and bet he would fold if he didn't have a hand.
It was very well done and it didn't take me long to see what was going on and what a huge uphill battle I was facing.
Posted by: JohnJr
Tom,
Do that... from what I recall, he started with 10K, and you with about 9K. It was pretty even. Then that T8, vs. 78 hand happened. You lost $5400 on that hand, and never recovered.

Last night was a blast.. I can't wait for our next tourney...
Like turtleboy said, I miss our usual Wednesday game and am glad it's back (and for real money too!)
Once word spreads more, I bet we get up to 20 people each week for these games.. one of my friends (a non-TC guy) wants to play, and with purple and his brother, i'm sure others will play too (NatasNJ, pmeyers, etc)
Posted by: montag
I'd love to join in. As a rookie, I'm sure you guys would love some of my money. :D
About how long does a tournament last, from start to finish?
Posted by: scottjf8
Montag - usually a few hours..
Posted by: Unsuited
If I would have had to predict it before the tourney I think I would have had 2 out of the top 3 correct...
Breacagan just because heck... None of the rest of us dared the limits he did in Vegas!
Smak because he always seemed to have a decent pile of chips in front of him whenever I saw him. Plus I make it a habit of not openly picking against anyone who could grind me into dust. :p
But watch out... I'm laying the groundwork for the ability to be in this upcoming tourney! What good is being management if you can't slip into work a few hours late every now and again???
Montag - You're not the one from RoK, are you?
Posted by: pmyers
I will definately be in next time. I just had plans this week.
What were the payouts?
Posted by: scottjf8
$65
$39
$26
You can see the results and payouts on the Pokerstars client, under "tourney" , then "private" - it's still there...

RoK - Realms of Kaos - It's an online Dungeons and Dragons type game. Nothing to fancy but it's free and I'm cheap. :) There was a Montag who was one of the Admins of the game.
Ok, nothing more to see here, back to our regularly schedualed topic...

I will be in next week for a tourney. I am transferring money now so I am prepared next week. I also prefer a NL game to a Limit game but I will galdly play both.
$10+$1 is a good number also.
Count me in. Who is creating the next one?
Posted by: scottjf8
Breacagan or TampaThunder have to do it, since I believe you need a certain number of hands logged at Stars to be able to, and both of them do...
Posted by: NatasNJ
Well it looks like my Fund transfer thing is screwed up. So I may not be able to get my fund over there by next Wednesday. If I can clear my party poker bonus (which should be done tonight or tomorrow) then I can yank money from there and throw it into stars.
Or worst case someone can commision me to play. And I will split the winnings with them. :)
Posted by: scottjf8
Natas, I can loan you the money on stars and you can send me equal amount at party if you want.
Posted by: gtrogue
I'm in next time. I transferred over enough money this week to cover several $10+$1 tourneys.
Posted by: NatasNJ
I may take you up on that scottjf8. I will worry about this on Tuesday so of next week. I will PM you soon..

Woo Hoo - I do so love being the overlooked underdog :)
For those who asked questions.
The Tourney last night lasted about 2 hr 20 minutes with 2 five minute breaks. It sounds like we can expect more people in upcoming weeks so I expect that will only get longer.
That being said if we alternate limit and no-limit each week I would not expect the no-limit games to take as long.
The payout mentioned above was for a Tourney with 13 people. the more players the bigger the payout. The breakdown is 50% of the entries to the first place winner, 30% to the second and 20% to the third.
Just a few thoughts of my own.
- I like the idea of alternating limit with no limit as it should give everyone a chance to play the game of their preference at least twice a month.
- I thought the start time was fine for a week night. If you make it later to accomodate west coasters then east coasters are put in a position of staying up later than they wanted to play. Any earlier and you exclude west cost players not yet home from work. Maybe a weekend game would work but I would have to wonder just how many people we would get to play.

Annoying that there's no Mac client for pokerstars. (Luckily I have Virtual PC.)
Man, I'm just now seeing this thread. Sorry I missed it earlier.
Marco, you'll only get a hand history if you played in the tourney and then only for the hands you played in.
I'll go ahead and set it up for same time next week. We can always change things in the future if we can agree on a better day/time.
Though I was first out I had a blast and am looking forward to the next one. Something about a dish best served cold. . . .

Week 2 of the Real Money Wednesday Hump Day Poker Game has been set up! Same time, same place. The only difference this week is that it will be a no-limit tourney. There are still no-rebuys, no-addons, so the only money at risk is your $10+1 buy-in.
Hope to see you there!

Wednesday night tourney has been set up. It's the Wednesday Hump Day TiVo-tational located under the Private tourney tab. This week is no limit with the same $10+$1 entry with millions going to Breacag...err, the winner.
I've left it at the same time (9:05 ET) as the majority of feedback I received requested that. Other requests were for anywhere from 15 minutes later to an hour later. Maybe we can alternate start times from week to week to accomodate those that would like to start later. Let me know what y'all think.

How long did it take last time to declare a winner? I'd be up for it if it doesn't go too late into the night.

Maui posted above that it took 2 hours and 20 minutes. We had 13 players last week, and are hoping for more this week! There are 5 minute breaks after each hour.

Oh, one big difference. Last week was Limit Holdem, this week is No-Limit Holdem, so we may well see the game move faster, as players move "all-in!"

BTW, if there's a "RayKinsella" there, that's a good friend of mine that I loaned some money to at Stars so he can play for real money.. so be nice to him :)
