Miles Davis: Midnight Music

I'm doing an interesting bit of ghost work tonight: nothing too heavy, and the contract will be finished with weeks to spare. There's a nice rain patter on the roof, giving that little mask of white noise that seems to soothe and smooth every ragged edge.
Miles Davis has been playing for the last three hours. From the sessions in the 40s with Charlie Parker, to Stan Getz and the sextet, to those amazing nights at the Plugged Nickel with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Ron Carter.
There is something about Miles and his music that can always make the world spin right for me -- that always takes me someplace else. Next to playing my own horn, listening to Miles is as close to being lost in music as I get.
So, if you care to share on this late night: What's the music that always takes you to that other place? If you're a musician, what's the music that makes you say, "man, I've just gotta un-case my axe and play."

Ahhhh..... I love Bird and he's still one of my biggest jazz influences. I used to sit in one of the practice rooms for hours over at UC Irvine, set the metronome to a comfortable tempo and would just start running through the Omnibook, one tune at a time, mistakes and all. Tried making a study of Trane, but man, the whole Giant Steps/Moment's Notice types of turnarounds was really hard for me to get that flow - and after playing for 25 years, I still can't get around on those types of tunes that well. No question that he's a lifetime study.
Quick anecdote: I took some lessons once from a guy named Doug Webb. I told him, "Man, I'm still having trouble figuring out Giant Steps". He says, "Oh, yeah.. I played that with Mike Garson the other night. We took it up about 450".
My heart runs largely hardcore fusion & funk, though I've played tons of top 40/disco stuff. I enjoy Brandon Fields (my favorite horn player for going on about 16 years now), Sanborn, Mike Stern, Brecker Brothers, Yellowjackets, Greyboy All Stars, etc... you know, the GOOD stuff that the "smooth jazz" folk never really get to hear. ;)

Mmmm. Coltrane was something beyond, and when he played with Davis there was nothing like it. I was listening to the Five Spot sessions with Trane and Thelonious Monk tonight, and, as always, had to stop trying to wrap my head around it all and just let it go.
As a slide player, my lifetime study is JJ Johnson -- as with Coltrane for a sax player, the jumps and twists are like grasping at water sometimes. But it's always a worthy effort. I met JJ a few times before he passed, and always came away with more than I could carry.
Only Brandon Fields I have (I think) is "Traveler." I like it a lot. Probably need to add some more. :)
Am a fan of fusion and funk myself: From the early stuff that Herbie and Maynard Ferguson were doing, to the Yellowjackets. And lately, I've had a this thing where I listen to Dave Holland "Live at Birdland" compulsively...for which I probably need forgiveness of some sort. ;)

I just had jazz on my mind. I caught the Playboy Jazz Fest at the Bowl Saturday and Wynton Marsalis gave a wicked new orleans tribute to Ray Charles.

There are many, but the CD that's getting the most play lately is "The Hawk Relaxes" w/ (of course) Coleman Hawkins.
But I'm also listening to "Ben Webster Meets The Oscar Peterson Trio" and Grant Green's "Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark"

Speaking of Grant Green... Feeling The Spirit is one of my favorite albums. He and Herbie Hancock just get sooooo funky on old Negro Spirituals and Gospel tunes.
