USA Today Columnist Upset with Joe Schmo 2

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

DeWayne Wickham claims in his column today in USA Today that calling the character Ambrosia "the bitch" is offensive and stereotypical. How ridiculous! It remains to be seen how much of a bitch Ambrosia will be, but I would have never thought that she had been labeled as such simply because she is black. (Heck I didn't even get the Ambrosia/Omarosa connection until I read Wickham's column!)

Wonder what he would have said if he had actually watched the first episode? Which obviously he didn't or he would have mentioned the minority "purge" that took place!:D

Or isn't aware that in the last series, "the bitch" was a white woman.

Yes, someone needs to write Mr. Wickham and give him the chance to remove the foot from his mouth. ;)

And the Spike TV spokesman...shame on him for not mentioning the very white Melissa Yvonne Lewis' turn as "Ashleigh, the Rich Bitch" in JS I!

And not to mention all of these characters are complete parodies of the characters created by mainstream TV. It's been a complaint for years that reality TV only shows the negative side of the black participants. Really, what JS is doing is the same thing the columnist is-that it's a ridiculous parody to portray people that way.

It always irks me when people who write columns about TV don't take the time to do their homework. I mean, in large part, their homework is WATCHING MORE TV. Sheesh. I could do that.

As mentioned, obviously the guy hasn't been watching much tv (especially the original JS). Has anybody told him the show is a parody yet?

That "The Apprentice" show is ridiculous too...talk about a stereotype!

The "Rich White Guy" thing is SOOOO played out! ;)

FWIW, I wrote an E-Mail to the columnist...through USA Today's generic letters to the editor E-Mail address...and tried to gently explain some of this to him. I wonder if his viewpoint would have been different had he realized that JS1 had a white "rich bitch" who was called just that on the show...

I won't not have been so gentle. The columnist is an idiot.

I agree. He's a total freakin' idiot.

This whole PC movement is really starting to tick me off!! If any white person says anything that can be remotely considered offensive by any minority, then that person is blasted into submission by the media.

Yet if any non-white person says something derogatory about a white person then everyone laughs and it's ok.

If you want to dish it, you better be willing to take it!

KROQ here in Los Angeles had this guy on the air this morning. His position was that by calling this one black girl "the bitch" you are calling all black women bitches and his wife is not a bitch. He kept coming back to his wife. The dj's attempted to explain that she was a fictional character based on Omarosa. He was also offended that Omarosa was characterized as a bitch. When it was pointed out to him that she WAS a bitch his reply was that was a matter of opinion. They also pointed out that there was a white girl referred to as the bitch in Season 1. He found that objectionable as well. He really was delusional and was all over the place. Whenever they would hit him with a truth it took him a while to come up with a retort... and they were always lame. Also... he never saw the show, he was just responding to an ad he saw in USA Today.

Hey thanks for that recap. He really does sound like a tool. I'm tempted to write him myself-the whole PC thing has gone too far in my opinion, as well.

What PC has done is made us unable to laugh at ourselves. And it's also {rant} forgotten to focus on some very serious issues, and has overly focused on others.{/rant}

Is KROQ where Ralph is?

It sure is... I wonder if Ralph participated in this segment of the show! :)

Ralph should have done his part of the interview in his normal voice, then announce that "Derek Newcastle" was in the studio and wanted to take part...

Well, if this guy doesn't "get" it after being told that a white gal was the "bitch" last season, he just doesn't get it.

He was there but he did tell the guy that he played the host on the show and was involved with the creation of the show..

I just read the editorial. While the guy is certainly entitled to his opinion, he just doesn't seem to get that parody is often a catalyst for change. Kind of sad, really.

One has to wonder why he's not writing a scathing column after every SNL episode.

Com'on, everyone knows that 'black bitches' are the new 'white bitches'! :p

Which guy...the columnist (Wickham) or the guy who fired off the letter to the FCC (Stith)?

Posted by: PJO1966

sorry... it was the guy who wrote the letter...

Uh huh. A lot of the vitriol directed at the columnist is better placed with Mr. Stith. Never once does the columnist say he was offended, he's just reporting on the letter, quotes Mr. Stith a few times, and comments on how some black people might react to the label. Re-read it -- he doesn't even think SpikeTV meant any harm.

Upon my first read, I also thought the columnist was an idiot. Granted, he should have done his homework that Joe Schmo used the label last year too, and included that for balance in his article. He even recognizes that it's a parody. He quotes both sides. Seems like he's just reporting to me.

He's not a TV columnist, so saying his job is to watch more TV is a little harsh...

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

Yeah that's true. I guess I didn't really notice that he wasn't a TV columnist-I read it in the actual paper copy of the USA Today and it just said he writes once a week for the Forum section.
