Last Comic Standing 6/22/04 [spoilers]

So this is no good! First, one of the funniest people doesn't even make it to the house. Now, we have two of the best comics in the house up against one another, and the promo for next week says "the funniest stand-up stand-off yet," implying that two even funnier people are up next week?
If the comics are using a strategy this season of picking off the funniest people early, each hoping that s/he might be the one funny person among four duds in the finale, this season will be a bigger joke than last season.
I still want to see Dan Naturman and Dave Mordal in the finale. Grrr.
Posted by: jamesbobo
It's too bad Bonnie lost. If she stayed in the house I think it would have created a lot more tension with Tammy.
I would prefer that they did away with the house concept. To me it's the weakest part of the show. Just have the comics go against each other on stage and let the best man, or woman, win.

Okay I have to agree with the overwhelming majority of the audience when I say that what we saw of Bonnie tonight just was not funny. Seeing the portion of her act they showed I honestly do not think she could beat any of the other comics.
I want Dave Mordal back to give us that wonderful wit inside the house.

bonnie was never funny, IMO, but wow 94%?
Posted by: ElVee
Two things bothered me:
1 - The intro to the show, with Jay's voice over - "... the 10 funniest comedians in the country ..." - Shouldn't that be "... the 10 comedians that the producers of this show think are the best fit..."? If the funniest comedians made it, Dan Naturman would have been there.
2 - Instead of getting right to the comedy competition, Jay Mohr gets to do a few jokes. What's up with that?
Posted by: scottjf8
Bonnie was terrible last night (and it's not just because I'm rooting for a fellow Michigander to win) and deserved to lose...
But Todd Glass is SO damn annoying, why couldn't they get rid of him....
And this show is not nearly as good as last year.. where's this year's Vos? Mordal? Ralphy May? Even Tess was funnier than this group....

94% lol

Actually I think this is a good thing and balances out the performances. He gets to "warm up the crowd." Otherwise the person going first would be at a disadvantage.
Posted by: dthmj
I agree with the audience - Bonnie was not funny. I've watched all but the first episode of this series, and have never found her funny.
Posted by: pmyers
I still think Corey Holcom is the funniest. I loved that he changed his material to fit the laundry mat crowd.
Posted by: mrcoaster
Agreed, Corey did adapt to the laundromat better than anybody else.
Who was Tammy kidding with her "Dump the people around Todd to make him feel the pain" stuff? Come on, we know she was dying to get Bonnie out of there.
Bonnie wasn't funny at all last night, but 94% must have been tough to take for her. Guess she should have picked one of those people she was so sure she could have beaten.
I hate the whole house concept and wish they'd just stick to comedians doing their stuff. Of course, if they did that, we'd have a different group and Dan Naturman would have been leading the way.

It's too bad we don't get to see Jay's real stand-up. I have seen him live twice and 95% of his stuff is not suitable for TV. He is one of the funniest stand-up's I have ever seen before.

I cracked up over that house!
Posted by: DLiquid
I didn't think Bonnie was funny at all. John Heffron was the comedian I liked the most in the Vegas episodes, and I thought he was pretty funny last night. Even when he's saying stuff that I don't laugh at, he's saying things I find interesting. He's a "smarter" comic. Bonnie on the other hand comes off as trying too hard and failing miserably, much like a lot of the other comics in the house.
I thought Corey was pretty good in the laundromat, and was glad to see him picked as the winner of that challenge. I'd much rather watch people that are naturally funny.
So what happened to the celebrity judges?
Posted by: GDG76
I didn't even smile at Bonnie's set. It just wasn't funny.
Even Heffron's jokes that I had heard before were still funny. She should have swallowed her pride and challenged someone less funny than him- he was the last one that I would have picked. Tammy and Ant both have tired one-trick pony acts and could have been easily taken out.
Either way, she wasn't even in the top 5 funniest for me. Get rid of Glass, London, Ant and Tammy and the show will be much better.
I still don't like that fact that there aren't more less polished comics and people like Kathleen Madigan are on the show. They should have let through more lesser known comics, not people who've been on basic cable since 1990.

The house scenes are OK, but aren't terribly interesting. Whoever edits this doesn't have editing reality shows down to the art you see in Survivor / Apprentice.
Posted by: okleydokley
I still don't see why everyone is so upset about Dan Naturman not being in the house.. He seemed to have about two jokes, both about being cheap. The line about jukeboxes not being fair is just dumb.. He did not have a very good attitude, and I would never have put him above some of the others that did not make it..

Tammy's just trying to get on the next Sopranos rip-off. She is horrible. I really think she was trying to disuade Ant from voting for Todd because she knew that Ant's #2 would be Bonnie. She was just trying to get more votes for Bonnie. I also think it was funny of Ant to begin his conversation with Bonnie with "do ya promise not to tell?" and then blabs what Bonnie said to Tammy. I thought Bonnie would have been funnier if she'd have changed her comment on why she chose Mike. She said something to the effect of "I said from the beginning that I wasn't going to vote for a woman because it seems catty." Instead of saying "I can beat Tammy, I can beat Ant, I can't beat Kathline..." She should have said "I said I wasn't going to vote against a woman, so I'm not choosing Tammy, Kathleen or Ant."
I actually think that Bonnie is funny. Not the funniest, but funny. I wish she would have chosen London. I also wish they would have had one episode where no one got voted off. Let them stew a little more before putting out the challenges.
Posted by: DLiquid
I really like the way they pick the two people to compete. Even better that they all get to watch what the others said :D. It's pretty cool that even if there is an alliance that tries to take someone down, that someone can pick one of the alliance members and crush them in the competition.
Posted by: pmyers
Did Ant really refer to the alliance as the "Herd"? I remember him saying something to Heffron about not voting against the "Herd".
Posted by: cwoody222
I don't think he was officially calling their alliance that. More he was just using the phrase "don't go against the herd".
Posted by: Todd
Apparently I'm in the minority here because I thought Bonnie's set was pretty good last night. But John's was more lively and I figured he would win, but not by a 94-6% margin....
Posted by: badabing8888
I agree. I thought Bonnie was ok. I do not find John that funny but he had much better energy and got the crowd on his side and he deserved to advance.
Another minority opinion I have is that I like Todd Glass. He is not my favorite but at least he is just having some fun. Some of these people are just way too stressed already.
My favorite at this point is probably Gary Gulman. He has been consitently funny and seems like a pretty good guy.
Ant HAS TO GO!!! He BUGS big TIME!!!! He is so insecure and jealous of any attention anyone else gets.

Agreed!
Also, how many more times are we going to have to hear the unfunny line "It didn't take Scooby Doo to figure out this mystery".
Posted by: mrcoaster
Well, for sure at least one more week (maybe several times in the ep?). I was thinking I'd heard the old Scooby-Doo bit a few times the last couple of weeks.
Move along, Ant.

I really though her Anorexia bit was not only not funny but was in very bad taste.
Posted by: bigcb37
Any one notice the HORRIBLE editing when John went out on stage grabbed the mike in his hand and then said "let me tell you something" (or something like that) then they cut to a different camera angle and the mike is suddenly back on the stand.... awful...it was obvious that they cut out some of his act right from the beginning...

Yeah, most comedians never say anything in bad taste. :D

Was she the same girl who did the "C" word joke on the Vegas round?

Thank god for Tivo so you can FF through the reality show BS of this show. I didn't watch last year and was afraid that once they moved to "The House" that it would be all reality crap. Fortunately it wasn't, but you sure can watch an episode fast if you cut that stuff out.
BTW, I'd hope they have a lot more audience warmup than just Jay's portion. First, if they didn't it would be unfair. Second, I'd feel bad for the audience that would only get to see two acts.
Posted by: GoodSpike
IMHO, Ant is only there because they wanted him in "The House" to make things a bit more interesting. I didn't think he was ever all that funny in his routines.
Posted by: mask2343
Ant sucks. (pun intended) :)

I thought it was funny, and I'd enjoy seeing her act, I think. She's certainly not as funny as Sarah Silverman, but some of her stuff is in the same style (offensive, surprising). She's certainly funnier than Ant and Tammy, for example. Plus, she's cute.
I still don't think they got it right this time for the people who made it into the house. I'm very interested in seeing Jay London in a challenge.

Yeah, I want to see London in a challenge as well. I think in a short set, London is pretty funny. Dont know if I could handle 30-45 min of his act but in a short 10min set, I think he will be hard to beat. seems like the audiences really respond to him once the shock of looking at him goes away.
His opening remark about being the 4th guy from the left of the evolutionary chart, while losing steam becuase we have seen it so much, is a great line and gets the audience rolling early.
Posted by: frankmint
Just want to ditto some points previously made, and add a few of my own thoughts.
I thought Bonnie was very funny - she just bombed that night is all.
Jay London, I did not want to like from the first episode. However, he makes me laugh so hard I cry. We'll see if Shtick wins....
Gary, Corey and John are the ones to beat (in that order), I think. I do want Todd to make a good show though, as I think he is the one I would want to hang with.

London seems to be telling old-fashioned simple one or two line jokes. Some of the others do those Seinfeld-ish "Isn't it funny how...?" type jokes, and a lot of times I'm thinking, "No, it isn't that funny." I think it's probably easier to do the old school comedy London is doing, but I agree with you that it would get boring after a while. The more story-based comedy can be more interesting and entertaining even if it's not always funny, especially over an hour or so.

Yeah he did. I hate Ant. He will get owned in a showdown with just about anyone in the house. I actually punched my tv when he did his exact same act in the laundrymat.
The strategy of following the herd is a stupid one, as was proven. I know Heffernon thought that Bonnie would never pick him because of their friendship.
He would have been better picking about anyone else. The "herd" is not going to pick him off for ignoring him. And the one re-deeming concept of this show is none of it matters since if you are funny you can withstand the onslaught.
For the record. Bonnie was not funny, and I have never thought she was very funny.
Although I have to admit my ability to judge who wins these showdowns is fairly non-existant.
Posted by: ufo4sale
I think it's obvious from last year that no one could predict who would win these showdowns.
Posted by: mrcoaster
The few showdowns I saw last year....the comedian that I thought was funniest that night always seemed to lose. Glad Bonnie changed that up.
It definitely helps to FF past much of the ep, but my girlfriend insists on watching a little of this and a little of that.
Posted by: MitchO
I think the "voting with the herd" idea is stupid also. Seems to me that the safest way to just make it through 5 head to heads (there are only 5, right?), is to just find out who everyone is voting for, and vote for someone ELSE .. avoiding the head to head. /shrug

But then they would vote for you.

Why don't they do a tourny sort of thing? I mean you're a comedian and you want to perform for people, right? But not on this show because if you perform, you might lose and get booted. If the audience thinks you're funny, then you win. So, if your funny, why NOT perform. I know that the audience is hard to gauge (see: Phan, Dat), but take that risk. Ralphie and Dave each performed more than one time last year. That Geoff guy only performed once (he would always vote for someone he knew wouldn't get too many votes and the rest of the comedians caught on and challenged him) and he lost. The show is really about exposure. For any of the comedians on this show, would it really be that hard to get a 30 minute show on Comedy Central? An "NBC contract" means nothing (see: Phan, Dat). Have them live in the house for 3 weeks to let the producers pick "interesting" pairs and pit them against each other in the first round of a tourny.
I'm really beginning to dislike the show (and I liked it last year because I hadn't seen 8/10 comedians who got in the house).

I think more of the comics need to realize that a) everything's on TV, and b) at the end of the day, the viewers choose the winner. And, if the viewers keep seeing the same material over and over again, it's going to annoy us (though, if last year is any indication, it didn't annoy the people who voted). Way too many comics in this ep were doing material we've already seen (and I missed the second hour of the NY semis).
"Scooby Doo."
"Evolutionary Chart."
"Ghetto portion of the show."
"You're not exactly a stick."
"My brother's wife's a whore."

No offense....but I really am sick of hearing people complain about the comics doing the same material. I just wish people would realize that 95% of the material a comic has is the same at every show they do. They will usually just add in 1 or 2 jokes that will have something to do with the particular city they are performing in and that's it.
That being said, that's why I was so impressed with Corey Holcom when he incorporated the laundry mat into his jokes.

First of all, these are 3 minute sets (I don't know how much they cut out of the head-to-heads, but the Vegas final and NY semis certainly were 3 minutes apiece). If you don't have two funny 3 minute sets, you're in trouble as a comic.
Second of all, yeah, comics do the same jokes every night on tour, but that's because they're ON TOUR, and different people are watching every time. If they were on TV every night, they wouldn't do that.

agreed that they have more than 3 minutes of material, but if you were in their shoes and in jeopardy of being voted out, wouldn't you use your very best 3 minutes of material? I would.

Or if you saw how well it worked for Dat Phan last year......
Posted by: barrettd
Dat Phan may have won last year because the rest of the people in the house treated him like crap, and the voting/viewing audience didn't like that. Especially since Dat seemed like a nice enough guy, trying to make his own way through the profession. When the NY comics started talking about how he was an idiot and hadn't paid his dues and therefore didn't deserve to be there, they instantly lost any vote I may have given them.
I just don't think the contestants realize they're being seen treating each other like crap on TV, and we'll be voting for/against them. Does anyone think, for instance, that Tammy will win America's vote considering what a shrew she's been? I mean, since we've conceded this isn't about finding the funniest person, personality will go a long way for the eventual winner.

It's way better than Ant's "ScoobyDoo" line
We won't need ScoobyDoo to solve the mystery of Ant using the ScoobyDoo line again....

Actually real comics have lots of material. So much so that there is little chance they would have to repeat it every time they had to do a 5 minute set. And that is basically all they have done so far.
So while it is true comics will repeat themselves, the ones that do nothing but the exact same 5 minutes of material over and over again are holding a big bag of nothing.

Am I the only one who thinks this year's show it just terrible? I can't name one person who is funny.
I really enjoyed last year; even with Dat.
I have fast forwarded 80% of this; SP about to be cancelled or moved way down the list.
Just my opinion..
