Dead Like Me

I saw the first season for rent in Hollywood video this past weekend and picked up the pilot DVD. I was quite impressed. I think the show is very good. I've already gone through all the DVD's except the season finale.

Is this show still on? Which channel shows it?

The second season begins on Showtime on July 25th at 10pm ET/PT.

My mother is in her mid-70s and I've been showing these to her the past week or so...we're 7 episodes into the 14 and she's hooked.

I was a bit concerned that the "hip" references George occasionally makes would go over her head. Well, even if they do, the fact that so many of the other Reapers plus some of their older "reap-ees" come from older stock helps to balance that.

Plus she LOVES Dolores Herbig (as in "Herbig" brown eyes) and I've been rediscovering why *I* think DH is just about my favorite character, too (next to Rube).

Can't wait for season 2!

Every episode except the season finale? The season finale ("Rest in Peace") was one of the best of the season - #3, I'd say. "Vacation" (#1) and "The Cook" (#2) were the other two that I'd rank right up there at the top.

I started watching the DVDs one afternoon, and found I just couldn't stop. I can't WAIT for the new season... I'm probably going to get Showtime for it this year, just so I don't have to wait to downl... ermm... watch them at my friend's house on VHS tape. Yeah, that's it. ;)

Well I watched the Pilot Saturday night and realized it was a good show. So I watched Disk 2 Sunday, Disk 3 Monday. Then got Disk 4 last night and watched 3 eps but had to go to bed.

Plus I felt I needed to savor the Dead Like Me goodness a little longer.

So what's the deal with the mom? The dad is having an affair and so far the mother doesn't know. But she seems to take everything personal that the daughter's do/say.

Even though it seems George was quite headstrong even as a little girl.

Just seems the mother was loving when the girls were little but George always tried to pull away (like the scene where she's learning to ride a bike and yells "And I'm never coming back!")

I am curious to see if the dynamics change at all this season since Bryan Fuller had a fall out w/ MGM over 'creative differences'.

I haven't been able to see any of the previews on showtime, I aslo want to see this new 'Georgie' haircut I keep hearing about :)

Just finished the season finale. This is a really good show. Sucks that I don't get Showtime.

I have a feeling that it won't - it seems that based solely on the credits, John Masius had most of the creative control for the latter half of the season, and it seems that the latter half of the season was the better half.

It's still a shame to have Bryan Fuller leave the show.

Yes, the stories when he left said that he was unhappy about network-mandated changes after the first few episodes, and that was why he quit. So for better or worse, it looks like what they were doing at the end of the season is what they want.

(At the time, I remember it being somewhat less quirky and smart as the season progressed, but still every bit as enjoyable. I just got the DVDs, so it will be interesting to see what impression a second pass leaves.)

Less quirky, yeah. I'd argue the less smart - I'd almost say it was SMARTER as the season progressed. It seemed that the stories were more structured and characters more fleshed out in the latter half. There was less reliance on Fuller's quirky editing style, such as the sudden time-lapse thing that he did (a lot) on both this series and on Wonderfalls' season premiere.

Perhaps in terms of how the show was made and structured, but my recollection is that there was more raw intelligence in the beginning, and that as the season went on, it started playing more to the cheap seats.

Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing; the show certainly didn't start sucking, and if it's more accessible, more people are likely to watch it. That was just my impression at the time....

They shifted focus away from the gravelings and the alternate appearances of the reapers somewhat in the second half of the season...and it seems as though some of the elaborate Rube Goldberg death sequences were toned down a bit as well. But the dialog is still quite crisp and no less fun.

I said previously that I hope George doesn't get her siht together too much this new season. That's a big part of what makes the show work for me (her slow transition to being a living -- though undead -- and functional human being).

You get to see what George looks like to everyone else several times. Mason once. But you never get to see what the others look like. And there was that episode where Daisy flashed the guy in the Porsche to get a ride. So if that wasn't an oversight, she still appears attractive to everyone.

Well, compared to George, Millie isn't particularly attractive...but several people have shown their attraction to her...including Ronnie Dobbs (psycho deadboy) and a couple of HappyTime co-workers.

The reapers only have to look different. Not necessarily a downgrade or an upgrade.

Agreed. I didn't start hating it or anything, but started missing the acid in George's commentary. It also bothered me when they subtly began injecting 'lessons' into the stories. I like Fuller's take on continuity, and the edge he puts on his work, so I missed him when the split began.

Still, it's better than 99% of everything else, and I can't wait for July 25th!

My absolute favorite is teh Cook episode.
But Mandy Patinkin is one of my favorite actors and this ep is focused on him.

I think the mom knows something is going on, she just doesn't have the drive to say or do anything about it. One episode toward the end of the season when his cellphone keeps ringing, he looks at the caller ID and murmers "wrong number" and she gives him this "do you think I'm stupid?" look, for example. But maybe I'm reading too much into it. :)

You may be right. Consider when JD got lost, and Joy and Clancy were in the car together - he suggests splitting up, and she flips out suggesting that he get a good lawyer. He clarifies that they should split up to look for the dog. Obviously Joy had been thinking about splitting up with him or her mind wouldn't have immediately gone to that place.

^^I just re-watched that episode last night...a great moment, both sad and simultaneously humorous.

It's in my NetFlix queue - hopefully it'll ship any day now! :)
