Okay, my first time posting here, and fairly novice when it comes to home theater. I hope I do not get flamed for something stupid. Trying to convince my wife that Hd Tivo worth the price, however, hard when I do not even have hd yet! Long story, but waiting on some work to be done on new cabinet to put my sammy dlp. Also, is it possible to check signal strength of OTA without a reciever. Anyone one have an old DTV HD reciever they want to sell or rent for less than than $50.00.

Thx for replys, and if I should be posting in another thread please let me know.

Unless there's someone here who lives in Richmond your best source of info would be one of the Local Reception threads over at avsforums.

Try this thread, or this thread, or this one.

There may be others. You'll just have to poke around a bit.

Thank you for the threads

The guy that installed my OTA antenna had a signal meter. Got all strong signals. I guess I will really know when my Tivo arrives.

Has your wife ever tried Tivo?? Mine LOVES it. Just get a 99 D* Tivo, and let her play with it for a while...........in a few months it will be an easy sale!!

Originally had UTV, bought when first came out before tivo had the dual tuners. That got fried during the hurricane last year, so have been using TIVO since then. Wish I would have known of this forum earlier, because we found it hard to live without the 30 second skip.

My problem now is that between the new TV, new cabinet and associated other toys I am at about $8500 on an original budget of $7500 for this project. Most of that is I underestimated the cost of the new built in to hold all my stuff. Shes questioning the differance hi-def will make in our"viewing experience". That is why I was hoping to show her true high def as opposed to just DVD PQ.

Also why I want to make sure I can receive OTA before I spend another $1000, if I am going to get divorced, at least I want my Bills game in hi-def to keep me comfy.

I live in richmond. unless you are more than forty miles from the transmitters, i wouldn't worry about signal strength. They are all up and working well now.

First welcome to the forum..I 'm pretty new here as well but been hanging out over at AVS Forum for a couple of years.
I have a Samsung DLP as well. This is an excellent TV for showing off High Definition television but just okay for standard definition. I had a bunch of people over for Father's Day and we were watching the U.S. Open golf tournament - and I don't think anyone was impressed until I played some stuff I had on the HD TiVo to show off the TV. So...in order to maximize your investment in the TV I would definitely tell your wife you need the HD-TiVo. Don't forget you are getting the ability to watch a recorded HD show while recording two other shows. The four tuner aspect of this is the biggest selling point to me.
Good Luck!!

I suggest you take a trip to your local Best Buy, Circuit City or some other electronics store in your area that has OTA HD. BUT be sure to be there when one of your wife's favorite shows is airing in HD. That will make the difference.

My Story:
I hooked up our new HD TiVo last Thursday. My Wife liked the HD picture but was not overly impressed. I kept showing her beautiful images from Discovery HD Theater, HDNet, etc. Again, impressed but why did we spend $1000 on this?

What made the real difference was showing her a show she already watched. The following Monday we watched "Everybody loves Raymond" in HD and that blew her away. Now she loves the HD and is happy with the purchase.

Now I keep hearing "oh my gosh, I can make out the wallpaper pattern in the background!", and "hey look, they forgot to take off that price tag on the bottom of the coffee cup!". HD is fun!

Thanks for the replys folks. The cabinet is being put in today, and I am finally going to get the TV up and running. I think I migght go to Best Buy and see if they have an open box hd tuner(seems they always have a bunch of returns as the drones do not know what to sell people). Hate for my wifes first impression of the TV to be standard TV coming from composite inputs! My originall plan when I bought this thing two months ago was that I would have had the hd tivo by now, seeing as how they were planned to released on tax day, at least according to Tweeter, LOL.

Oh well, we will see if I am still married in the AM:)
