Question on SG-1 and Atlantis

i've never watched any of the stargate episodes but would love to try atlantis.

but please clarify this for me, is Stargate Atlantis related to last season's Stargate SG-1? Because I'm seeing two premieres on SciFi channel next month, if so, why the need for two?:

Basically, Stargate Atlantis is a spinoff of SG-1, hence the two season premiers. Sorta like how Star Trek DS9 and Voyager are spinoffs of The Next Generation.

In a nutshell, the shows follow different teams of explorers in different galaxies and are up against different Big Bad.

The common thread is that they use the same network of stargates built eons ago by a race called The Ancients.

Actually, I think it's two networks, and they're not interconnected because of the distance...

Isn't the vaunted "8th chevron" all that's required for a long-distance call to Thor's galaxy? I'd guess it's a similar situation for this setup as well.
