This is from TiVoultionary on the above link...

"This was, in fact, the first small blind test rollout, randomly updating a few hundred customers. We do this to get an estimate of how many people will call Customer Care, and how people will react.
Just a reminder... all beta NDAs are still in affect!

They did that with 2.01 too, for the same reasons.

Anybody remember how long it was between this first hundred to the rollout for 2.0.1?

Historically speaking, can we expect to wait a few weeks, months?

So what's in 2.5 for SA users? Except for the "advance to tick" thing? Why should I want it? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, let's see...assume they are biasing the blind test rollout to DTivo users (prolly wishful thinking). And say a 'few hundred' = 500. And installed base of DTivo users is 50,000. That means I have a 1% chance of having it when I get home. Better odds than the lottery.

Either way, it's coming soon. YEA!

So far the only CONFIRMED things in the 2.5 update:

1. Dual-tuner support.

2. 15 minute skip based on the tick marks on the play bar at the bottom of the screen.

3. Some form of update preventing loss of the 30 minute live buffer by pressing a number key accidently.

Based on semi-reliable rumors there are other small updates (changing hidden numbers for menu select perhaps?), faster menus and bug fixes included and for SA there may well be VBR! We'll see...

TiVo is rolling out a powerful new version of the TiVo Service! You will receive it automatically as a part of your paid subscription.

The Update Guide is in PDF format, so you need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most computers have Adobe Acrobat Reader pre-installed. However, if you don't already have Acrobat Reader, you can download it here for free.

You can download the Update Guide in PDF format here:

Frequently Asked Questions:

What's new for Summer 2001?

When do I get the update?
In order to balance the demand on our servers and on our Customer Service staff, we will be updating customers in batches over the coming weeks. The updates will begin in August, 2001. Though information on individual customer accounts cannot be provided, we expect the majority of customers will be updated during September and October, 2001.

What do I need to do?
Nothing--it's all automatic! Your Receiver will get the update during a daily call, then restart itself at 2:00am the next day and begin using the update.

How will I know if I got the update?
You'll be notified with a message announcing a service update, so just be sure to check your new TiVo Messages!

If you're interested, you can also check the software version in Messages & Setup. Select Receiver & Phone Setup, then Phone Connection. The Software Version will read "2.5." (If you look at this screen after the update has arrived, but before your Receiver has restarted itself, you will see "Pending Restart" as your Last Call Status. This is normal. The Receiver will restart itself early the next morning.)

Record two programs at once
Is Powerpuff Girls on at the same time as the big game? No problem. Do you want to switch between two shows, and use Trick Play™ on them both? Your wish is our command. The second tuner in your Receiver can now be activated to allow you to get even more out of your DIRECTV channels.

Back to What's New
While you fast forward, you can press the ADVANCE button to instantly jump ahead to the next tick mark. (Tick marks are 15 or 30 minutes apart, depending on how long the program is.) You can also press ADVANCE to jump back to the previous tick mark while you're rewinding.

Back to What's New
WishLists get even better
We've made it quicker and easier to browse the lists of programs your WishLists find. Also, we've added a way to search for similar words (like "horse" and "horseback," or "49er" and "49ers") in Keyword and Title WishLists.

Back to What's New
Improvements to Parental Controls
Have you ever temporarily disabled Parental Controls for the babysitter, then forgotten that they re-lock after 4 hours? Now you can choose to turn off the auto re-lock feature. You also have more options for setting ratings limits on TV content.

Back to What's New
Shorter phone calls
TiVo is now using the satellite to deliver TiVo Service information like TiVolution Magazine and Showcases--which means that your phone calls will be significantly shorter!

Here it is...

First a post by Russ:

"It suddenly occurred to me why I don't really mind the PTCMs -- People here seem to be annoyed that they get a message they have to click through when all they want to do is start watching some shows. But that NEVER happens to me. Why?
Because my Sony remote has a "Now Playing" button. I don't have to press the TiVo button to get to my now playing list -- so the only time I'm seeing the PTCMs is when I have to go to the "TiVo Central" screen for some reason. What I mean is, I'm not in "Watch TV" mode; I'm not itching to watch that new episode of Family Guy -- for that I'd just hit the Now Playing button. When I'm likely to see the PTCMs, I'm in "System Upkeep" mode -- maybe I'm going to review the To Do list, or check my season pass manager. At that point, I really don't mind seeing a message that Showtime is having a free weekend, etc.

The more I browse these boards, the more glad I am that I bought the Sony. First I realize that I'm not killing my live buffer accidentally when I go for the instant replay or skip-to-end buttons, because they're so far away from the number keys. Now this..."

then TiVolutionary's reply:

"Russ, we fixed that in 2.5."

This is all found buried in the PTCM big thread.

Eh? I originally understood RB's reply as "we fixed the Now Playing button - you won't be able to skip the PTCMs by pressing it, anymore". Or maybe I'm going crazy.

The question that begs to be answered by RB hopefully:

Now that the DTivo 2.5 update info has been rolled out, including the time frame Tivo is estimating for the update can we please get an hint as to what track 2.5 is on for SA users? Will our 2.5 updates come after November or will they roll out very closly with DTivo users? At least that info will keep the stir crazy SA calm, I for one just want an estimate so I don't get my hopes up (I was not around for the 2.0.1 roll out so I haven't learned patience yet) ... http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks!

What is a VBR? Sorry for my ignorance, but this last piece of knowledge will make me the 'Knower Of All Things' and I won't have to bother anyone again. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/cool.gif

Even before I read the rest of the thread I didn't think that RB's reply had ANYTHING to do with preventing loosing the buffer. Especially since it had a http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif after it I took it as a jab/joke about being able to skip PTCMs with the Now Playing button...

Variable Bitrate encoding. It's a method of encoding MPEG2 data so that it takes up less space and/or improves quality. Basically what it means to TiVo users is that you will be able to cram more shows on to your hard drive.

SaabCaptain - you misread Richard's post. He was referring to the fact that PCTMs don't pop-up when Sony users hit the list button instead of the TiVo button.

Ahhh I see what you mean, it seems your right in reality RB was saying they found a way to prevent Sony users from skipping PTCMs. In my defense Russ seemed confused too since a few posts down he was wondering about some 2.5 correction to prevent loosing the live buffer. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Russ wasn't confused. He was hoping to God that RB didn't really mean they were going to intercept his "Now Playing" button. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

But will 2.5 have a way to skip to the end of a long list?
To get to the end of the conflict management data I have to scroll down through around 60 screenfulls of data each time. I like to see what conflicts were added from the latest program data download but I'd sick of holding down the channel down button and going through screen after screen to get to the end.

Posted by: carl67lp

Okay...this is bad...

Last night, my DTiVo was recording my SP of The Screen Savers. My girlfriend, not realizing, changed the channel and told TiVo to cancel recording. I came downstairs and asked what happened, and she told me. No biggie...it'll record at 10pm. But I now realized how much I yearned for the dual tuners. I went ahead and made my daily call, just in case...

Then, while I slept, I had a dream that I was one of the "chosen few" on the blind-rollout. Isn't that bad? :-)

It was not intended as a conformation nor a tease. It was simply a statement that with either result that VBR can provide (i.e. smaller files, or better quality) the end result would be more recordings fitting on the drive. This is based on the fact that if they decided to go the quality route then you'd probably be able to dump your default quality down a notch (provided you're not already using Basic) thus allowing you to record more. Or if they decided to go the smaller file route, then duh it can hold more.http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Beta testers are on NDA???? Evidently beta testers are receiving it. Since I did apply for the beta why wasn't I accepted?

Because it was selected by a random sampling of the people who signed up. And, I guess you are unlucky. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Posted by: TivoFan

First of all I would never violate a NDA.

However, if someone didn't sign up to be in a beta test and was upgraded to 2.5 randomly, I could easily see how they could think that the NDA did not apply to them. In fact, I'm not sure that it would apply to them.

Posted by: DrStrange

The NDA would definitely not apply to them. Who said it did?
