Cheap HDR112
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just got out bid on ubid.com
I found a HDR112 referb for $191 shipped. I bought mine for about $170 shipped a month ago. Now a friend wants one but I can't find the great deals like I could. Anyone know where I could get one cheap?

If they have them in stock, www.avoutitters.com. It will be either $165 or $170 plus about $8 or $10 for shipping.

Check out ECost ( http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecsplash...asp?dpno=957235 ); HDR112 refurb's for $159 plus S&H. I think that's about the cheapest you can get these for (though the S&H is fairly high).

Are there any downsides to buying one of these 14 hour units, assuming that I'm going to upgrade it? (I definitely will do so). Is the older remote different from the current one, etc?
Also, how do I get an IR blaster to go with one of these units so that I can control my cable box?

The largest downside to these refurbed units is that Philips appears to have a less than stellar refurb "good to bad" ratio. Some people have reported going through 3 TiVos to get a good one. For me it only took one replacement, but I lucked out and ended up with a single-drive 30 hour (I ordered a 14 hour from UBid, received a bad dual-drive 30, Philips replaced it with a good single-drive 30), so it was all WELL worth the trouble. And of course there's probably a majority of people who get the refurbs that work with no problem at all.
My personal feeling on it is that the refurbs are truly a great deal, you just have to be prepared for the possibility of some exchange hassles in the event that it doesn't work right out of the box.

Hmmm... I was considering ordering a unit from ecost, but if I got a dual drive unit that would be a problem. My whole goal is to get the cheapest possible system to upgrade with two 80G drives.
Has anyone ordered from ecost before? Is it possible to exchange systems if I get a working dual drive unit?

Curiously, the more modifications you make, the lower quality of unit you can accept. If it has bad or married drives, you could replace them with good drives and images from functioning units you already own. If it has a bad modem, you could add a TiVoNET. Battery problems can be remedied with cleaning and occasional soldering.
Seriously physically defective TiVos like having a cracked motherboard I doubt would make their way back to the market.

You can order them from the TiVo Store.

This sounds good, but I don't currently own a Tivo box. I'm considering getting my first one so that I can then hack it. If I get one that doesn't have a working drive or has married drives, I'm in trouble if I can't return it (or at least out a couple of hundred dollars).

Thanks for the info on where to get an IR Blaster. The listing on the Tivo Store site makes it look like one of these comes with the Tivo. Is this the case?

Thanks to everyone who offered me help. I bit the bullet this afternoon and ordered a HDR112 refurb unit from ecost for $159. I also ordered 2 80G drives. I'll post in other topics how things go when I get the unit and attempt the upgrade.
