Thoughts on Thumbs Transplantation?

Hi,

I'm about to go away on my honeymoon to Hawaii, where there will be no TiVos to use. Since we're going away for 3 weeks, I was considering upgrading my main TiVo (14 hour unit + 80 gig Maxtor) to use a 30 gig A drive, then rebless the 80 and add it back. I have decided against it, as we've put a lot of work into thumbing things up/down over the past 8 months, I don't want to lose those preferences, and I don't have the time to try what I'd like to...

Once I get back in June however, I'll have some free time for the first time in what seems like forever.. (wedding preparations will do that!).. What I'm planning on doing is what I'd originally planned on doing back during 1.3 - getting a Thumbs-dumping script working, and a thumbs-updating script working, the former using output from the latter. This way I hope to migrate thumbs preferences from one instance of the machine to the next.

I'm curious as to whether it will work with 2.01 (since suggestions seemed initially to rely on more than mere thumbs, or is that a correct assumption?).. I'm also curious if 2.01's MFS has changed radically enough that you can't easily obtain thumb data (I did it in 1.3.. but I haven't really had time to dig into 2.01 yet due to my schedule). One goal I hadn't had time to achieve was dump thumbs from my main 1.3 machine into some format, try "installing" them via a similar script on my 2nd tivo, then see if the suggestions list (after an appropriate amount of time) became very similar to my main tivo's suggestions.

I figured before I went away, I'd post this thread, calling for opinions/experiences/etc. Am I reinventing a wheel that someone would like to share? Does anyone see any problems with me publishing a tool that would do such a thing, if I got it working? (i.e. is there any way that I've missed that this could be interpretted as theft of service somehow?)

Thanks. Sorry if I don't reply back until June. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

Unless you also have a 30 hr A drive image available, putting a 14 hr image on a 30 GB drive will result in a 14hr A drive.

If you haven't been following the TivoMad story, by the time you get back in June we should have additional testing completed and I'll bet that the wait for A drive expansion will be over. Then you will be able to have a 30Gb + 80Gb tivo with your current image.

First, yes Cedric I have a 30 hour A drive from a 30-hour one-drive unit that I was going to use.

Second, yes I've been following the TivoMad thread rather closely (even when it was just over in the UK forum).. However that doesn't change the need for a thumbs-migration tool (if you care about your thumbs data, anyway). In my case, I have a 14 hour A drive already wed to a 80 gig B drive.. I'd still need to go back to an A-drive-only scenario before applying his steps (if I remember correctly). I even have to go back to 1.3, don't I? (again, from the last I remember reading about it)

Anyway, I went through and did a bit of digging last night and found a few places where thumb data is displayed.. It's been so long that I can't remember if it's different from 1.3 - I gotta dig up my old logs. I can't remember if I ever saw a thumbness of "1" with "Implied" next to it before.. Maybe it's because I had been thumbing everything in sight back then. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

Thumbs format has changed significantly from 1.3 to 2.0. If you check out this link, I show a way to print out all the shows that you gave thumbs ratings to. Especially considering how 2.0 calculates ratings, I would take that list and manually rethumb the shows on 2.0 software. You should get better results than writing a program to do what the 2.0 software does to convert from 1.3.
