Could someone explain whether or not an unsubbed TiVo is as useful as any other digital VCRs on the market, or if it is missing vital features?

The only other products I know about:
1. Ultimate TV forces you to buy a subscription
2. Replay TV more or less puts the price of the subscription into the purchase price of the unit (something TiVo should have done or should do IMHO).
With an unsubbed TiVo will would be able to record programs the way you would with a VCR (e.g. record Monday from 8:00 to 8:30 on NBC). You can also pause and rewind live tv. You will not have all of the features of Replay TV since you pretty much paid for a lifetime subscription with that product. Hope this helps some. Good Luck!

Ace, LifeIsABeach! I was led to believe that full use of the live tv buffer was the limit of an unsubbed Tivos capabilities. What you say is the case is at least of some use.
