Multiple tivos and expanded basic cable tv are really nice, but...

But do you really watch what what you want to watch?
Or is it more of a convenience thing for overflows and things that interesting in passing.

I've had my 2nd unit (a 20H) for 3 weeks and I'm set to return it. My 1st tivo is still only 14H and I can work around the sci-fi marathons of the shows that I'd like.
My 2nd Tivo has made me more into a couch potato and a loner. I watch programs just because they're there. Interest in the programs is a distant second.

In fact, I seriously considering dropping expanded basic cable tv to just basic cable. I can't stand to stop to only antenna -- having to readjust the antenna to improve receeption is annoying.

Do you ever get the same feeling?

There isn't that many interesting shows to watch!

Get rid of game shows, reality progamming, sports, documentaries, 3/4th of drama and comedy shows. There are very very few movies on cable worth watching.

That doesn't leave too many shows worth watching. There's only about 3 or 4 shows in the entire week that might overlap. I think I can handle that.

The only reason to keep expanded basic cable tv is because of star trek re-runs and farscape. And that's only for my soft spot to reminisce.

Other than that I wouldn't have problems going down to basic cable.

The sides of my Sony SA are bulging from all the programs on it. My cable co just added 12 more feeds on the digital box.

I'm dubbing the 7th game of the 1992 NLCS cliff-hanger between the Pirates and Braves from ESPN Classic as I type.

I don't have enough storage space or channels. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you need or want multiple Tivos then go right ahead and have 'em.

I'm going to keep my expanded basic line-up in Tivo but deselect the "extra" channels. I'll try this for a week to see if I have an withdrawl symptoms.

That's all very true, if you have seen all the good movies. The solution is not to get rid of all that stuff. You have to be interested in something! I keep busy with basic cable by watching little more than history and science shows plus a smattering of other doucmentaries.

TiVo can help you solve your shortage if you will give it some clues with the thumbs keys. Tell it which movies you liked and be patient while it tries a few reruns. Go to the Bravo channel and watch Bravo Profiles or Inside the Actors Studio. In short, figure out what you like (or don't) and tell TiVo.

Whether or not you need the second TiVo depends on how many conflicts you are seeing. Sounds like you don't have enough interest to justify two. Trade one for a bicycle and rain gear. Or start a garden. If I lived in Portland I would have tuberous begonias in every hanging basket on my porch.

I've had my 2nd tivo for 3 weeks. I used it get rid of 3 dozen or so conflicts. The problem is that I only had a passing interest in them.

I've also tried digital cable with AT&T for 6 months so I'm not missing anything.

There's very few programs worth watching let alone justifying the extra $17 to AT&T.

I just did. TiVo caught the PBS series for me called "Great Performances." It is INCREDIBLE!. This one show paid for my annual TiVo subscription.

Of that series, the absolute best is "Chuck Jones:... A Life in Animation." It reviews the life work of Warner animation director Jones. There is no funnier cartoon than "A Froggy Day." And Robin William's bit on Wagner's publicity failures (no posse) is the funniest skit ever devised by a near-human comedian.

Conflicts are only one reason for multiple Tivo's. I use my second as the "Kids" tivo. It only has season passes to all me kids programs. It is easier than finding vcr cassettes, and I know that I always have the latest of their favorites without taking any of my space. It is also easier, I do not have to search pages and pages of programs to find theirs vs. mine. (Too bad Tivo does not have a folder option per user)

I do the same thing as ManNantucket.

I had purchased a DirecTV/combo box to replace my original standalone. I found that having the second Tivo made it much easier for everyone. I have 2 Tivos, the kids can watch their Tivo (with Parent approved shows!), and Mom and Dad can watch their Tivo. I still use the Second Tivo to record conflicts on the first.

I thought that the dual-tuner upgrade would make me sell the original. Instead I ended up swapping the standalone for a SECOND DirecTV/combo. (4 Tuners, yay!) The standalone is going to my brothers.

2 Tivos mean that 2 people can watch 2 different shows at the same time (on 2 different TVs of course..). 1 Tivo means that 2 people fight over what to watch. (My kids always seem to win those fights: Dad can just watch his shows late at night! (Damn Tivo!)).

Unfortunately, I don't have any children, so there's no benefit in owning a 2nd tivo with programs just for them to me.

There's no conflict over what to watch because my girlfriend doesn't live with me.

I live in an apartment so I can't benefit from owning a DirecTivo.

Perhaps I'll change my mind if my tax rebate check comes this week. My brother is a dentist and has said that I can live with him. Perhaps I'll get a DirecTivo then.
