TiVoNET was working, now can't dial up - Please help!

I completed the TiVoNET hack a while back, and all has been running smoothly until last Friday. Since then, I have been unable to make the daily call - I just tried forcing another call and it didn't work. My ethernet connection is still working (as evidenced by the fact that I am able to post this http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif ). The only change that I can see is that my software version is now 2.0.1-002-000 when I THINK it used to be 2.0.1-001-000. If there was an upgrade to the software version, I assume it might have written over the TiVoNET hack.

Wanted to make sure before I ran Jack's TiVoNET utility again. Has anyone else seen this before? Am I thinking about the fix in the right way?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you have received the 'svideo resolution' fix. It cleared all hacks on your machine. The tivonet stuff needs to be re-installed, or copied from the other partition. This just happened to me this morning.

the tivo hard drive has two root partitions. (usually hda4 and hda7)

it seems that anytime that the tivo gets an update that changes the version # , it swaps root partitions. if it was booting to hda4 with version 2.01.001, version 2.01.002 would load on the hda7 partition (2.01.002 is the "svideo resolution" update), and boot from there after a restart. (hence the "Pending Restart" message) your tivonet configuration is still on the old partition, the tivo is just booting from the other partition and not seeing it.

if you used Jack's method and scripts, the the tivonet setup configuration is still in the /var/hack/tivonet directory. (hda9 on my tivo). the /var partition is a "temporary" storage location for the tivo, and can be wiped and reloaded when the tivo wants to, but it stayed intact for me during the 2.01.001-2.01.002 transition.

you have to get a bash prompt on your tivo again and just re-run the script to load the tivonet configuration on the updated partition.

btw, just fyi, the TivoMad single drive fix DID survive the update!http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

good luck!

Is there any way to set things up so that one doesn't have to yank the A disk and redo the script every time the software changes? Since the software update also resets the sysinit script so no bash shell is enabled, using the serial port is no help.

As has been stated before, you can change the boot parameters to boot the OLD partition (set runmyworld=false for safety). Then the new partition can be mounted, and the changes either edited in, or copied over. Then change the boot params to boot the new partition again, and with luck (and skill), you're home free.

So is it downloading a whole new version, or just the patches and installing it all on the alternate? If it was just patches, does it really have to switch to the alternate?

I guess I'd better make a backup of 2.0.1-001 and 2.0.1-002 before they patch again.

I, and I'm sure others, would appreciate some more details as to what to do to prepare for a software upgrade. I'm not knowledgeable about Linux, though I can stumble my way around after a fashion. I assume that whatever one does, it has to be after the update has downloaded but before the restart, right? Because once it boots with the new software, there's no way to get a bash prompt without yanking the disk (right?)

nope. let the updated tivo restart. this will assure that the update took ok, and all is well.

as i stated in my post above:

it seems that anytime that the tivo gets an update that changes the version # , it swaps root partitions. if it was booting to hda4 with version 2.01.001, version 2.01.002 would load on the hda7 partition (2.01.002 is the "svideo resolution" update), and boot from there after a restart. you have to get a bash prompt on your tivo again(i just pull the drive and modify rc.sysinit on the updated partition) and just re-run the script to load the tivonet configuration on the updated partition.

nope.
another method, bypassing the need to pull the drive,(via the diagnostic mode, see hackfaq section 4.3) as sjf posted above:

"As has been stated before, you can change the boot parameters to boot the OLD partition (set runmyworld=false for safety). Then the new partition can be mounted, and the changes either edited in, or copied over. Then change the boot params to boot the new partition again, and with luck (and skill), you're home free."

This might seem stupid but, couldn't you just set up both partitions with the TivoNet hack when you did it the first time. Wouldn't this avoid having to remove it and do it again.

I'm asking 'cause I just got a tivo 2 days ago and have to do the TivoNet hack soon. I don't use a land based phone (only a cell phone) so I get no updates when my original guide info runs out some time next week.

Now your asking your self "how did he do GS?" Took it to my brothers house and used his phone http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Ok, perhaps I'm denser than usual this morning, but.. My understanding is that with 2.0, you can't get a bash prompt by the serial connection by entering the "factory" password, but must edit the disk (which requires pulling it). And even if one could, since I have a Sony, for which the "factory" password doesn't seem to work, I'd be out of luck.

What am I missing? How do you get access to the disk to make the changes, after the restart with the new software, without pulling the disk? I KNOW how to do it WITH pulling the disk (just did that again the other day...)

Qyv -- Setting up both partitiions with the hack doesn't do you any good. When the new software version is set up, everything in the 'new' partition is wiped out. This leaves your modifications on the 'old' partition only.

Stevel -- You must pull the drive to setup the serial connection the first time (unless it had been previously setup under 1.3). Anyway, once you have a serial connection, just run (I forget) utility to set the password to 'factory', or whatever you want. This is described in the Hack FAQ. At this point you have access to the boot parameters, and when a new software version is loaded, you can change the parameters to boot off of the old partition.

The Hack FAQ says to use the following command to set the password:

crypto -u srp "password"

when I do (via Telnet), I get:

Option srp not recognized

Now what?

The faq lists the command as

crypto -u -srp "password"

Did you leave the hyphen out?

Oops - yes, I did leave the hyphen out. Thanks.
