200 GB - Who'll be first?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Maxtor appears to have released their 100 GB drives, although you can't find them in retail yet. Who's gonna be the first to break the 160 GB barrier? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Imagine 200Gb on a DirecTivo system. How many hours would that be? Pretty good for VOD. After it fills up, just close the DirecTV account and leave it as a movie library.

TiVo "Black OPS"
Posted by: kdmorse
I haven't been able to find a price for em yet.
But the big question isn't who will get a 200GB system up first and declare themselves the new Tivo King - that's just a matter of money. It's who will get a *usable* and *stable* system up and running. It may require additional power (the TiVo's PS may not be up to the task of spinning up two monsters at once), and additional cooling. It may work on my computer room floor long enough to get a screenshot - but will it work in my entertainment center...
(But seriously folks, has anyone actually seen a price yet?)

A guy over in the Replay forums says he saw them for $280, but that is for a reseller, so I imagine it'll be more expensive to consumers at first. I expect $300-$350.

Otto, what's their Maxtor designation (Diamondmax???)? I did a quick Net search and came up empty.

That would be about 170 hours in a DirecTiVo! However there is currently no way to replace the A drive in a DirecTiVo so the best you could do is add one to the 40GB drive that's already there giving you about 125-130 hours.
Now with a SA unit you could put in two and get 235-240 hours at basic. That's 10 DAYS of non-stop recording!

Seems a little strange that the official Maxtor site makes no mention of this "new drive"?

In my mind, the most exciting thing about this is that it *should* drive down the price on 80GB drives to a level that I'm willing to pay. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's a certainty. When it comes to advancing hardware technology every peak eventually becomes a valley. Given that it's still a commodities market -- price declines hand in hand with creeping obsolescence.

There's also the question of who can get their grubby hands on the drive before official release!
Methinks the new TiVo King shall be someone from Maxtor...
Posted by: dd9
What about the current 128GB IDE limitations? Looks like dual 100GB drives may the the best we can do with current TiVo's.
Posted by: Worf
Heh. that's what the new ATA spec was for, the one that caused some controversy because of "CPRM".
But we'll probably see larger drives with a jumper for "LBA Limit", just like drives have "Cylinder Limit" and such.

That was too funny!!!!!!!! Mr. Wallet seems to have some kind of mind melding connection with Mrs. Wife!!

Hey Answers,
The Maxtor 100GB drive just started showing up in Japan. I don't think you'll see any info about them on Maxtor's website untill they hit the mainstream.
I'm not sure on linking, but here's the site with some pics.
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akib...0519/536dx.html
BTW, the site is in Japanese, but the pics are in english. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Cool! If I read those pictures right, the drive is only 5400RPM - which is a good thing to TiVo usage. (Two 7200RPM drives is more than the PS can spin up at one time).
It also means they may not create as much heat as I was afraid they would.
And only 40,000 Yen! ($330 US if my math is right)

Answers you sure love your Tivo donīt you?Really nice close up in any case and the best price in Tokyo is $277 at today rate. I am sure that you are already looking at doing a 200gb Tivo! So how many hours does that translate to at version 1.3? 243+hours for sure.

Funny you should mention that. Truth is that as a rule I don't watch much TV at all. I went after the Tivo hack because I'm a gadget junkie and it piqued my interest.
Re: the Tivo? So far, my 14 year old DEARLY loves the one I built for him; my wife could take or leave the one I built for us; my (just out of law school and staying with us for a couple of weeks now) daughter looks at the programs I've chosen to save and claims I have horrible taste and that "she can't stand to watch any of the shows I've recorded! A friend of ours who's been visiting recently says he "hates it" because he "loves to channel surf, and the damned Tivo's always interrupting his surfing with a recording task. My wife's principle complaint is that she kinda, sorta, enjoyed the "looking forward to watching such and such a show at such and such a time on such and such a night -- and now that's been ruined by having it all captured on the Tivo without the traditional scheduling time constraints.
I LIKE it because I can now archive some of my favorite PBS shows (Frontline, Nova, Civil War Journal, Sopranos etc. -- no wonder my daughter thinks I have crappy taste?) and speeding through commercials can be habit forming.
Otherwise? It's just another gadget toy to me and one that's in it's infancy to boot. Needs high capacity removable storage and more sophisticated software (you know so that you could organize the amorphous collection of programs into some semblance of a "library" for example) and a few more bells and whistles before it will truly measure up to my expectations.
A gadget toy? Yes, but a fun one and a challenge to build. My immediate needs have been well met.

Actually the heirarchy is:

$280 is the retail price in Japan at the Tokyo area shop listed in the link below.Accordingly 80gb drives should be
crashing the $-199 level any day now.
Also IBM own 100gb drive is due to hit the market anyday according to the translation I have on that Japanese article

Speaking of IBM........a new triple layer technology called pixie dust is going to push the storage capacity limits to around 400gb per HD by 2003 according to a spokesperson for IBM. I am sure Maxtor and all the other OEM's will follow suit. Could that mean the first 1000 hour TiVo ???................yikes!!!

You sure are right about the price of 80 gig drives coming down...Just saw in BestBuy Flyer for Northern NJ a 80 gig Western digital WD800BBRTL drive for $279.99 plus a free $80 gift card by mail for future purchase. This brings price to under $200 for a 80 gig 7200 rpm(too hot?) drive...First I have seen of this drive, no info on bestbuy.com, but will see If they actually are in stock at store, maybe tomorrow.
