For those with an interest in such things, I have posted a copy of the GNU fileutils that contains my trivial modifications to dd.

The modified dd can take the command line argument "progress=1" to display a running count of the number of blocks written. Used with a block size of one meg (now the default in my version), this will give a pretty easy way to judge how far along in the process you are.

Known bugs: The progress indicator does not increment for the last block. ie. it will only count up to 59 if you copy a 60 meg file with a one meg block size. Don't take this to mean that the copy wasn't complete, it was.
