Hi you all, Trying my first upgrade :-) Read on www.tivo.tvheaven.com website that backup drive needs to be an identical drive, Is this true? Quantum drive to a Quantum drive, Or can it be the same size & what not?
For the record it's a Sony 30hr standalone.

For most backup techniques, no. I think what is meant is don't backup a 15 Gig Maxtor with a 15 Gig Western Digital.
Translations of say "15 Gig" vary from company to company.
Just be 100% positive that the free space of the backup drive is equal to or greater than the size of the source.
Using Dylan's boot disk you're creating an image of the drive as a whole, so you're not worried about partition sizes matching, etc.

Thanks for the quick response :-)
But are you saying a Quantum drive model LC XXX should be backup with a Quantum LC XXX not a LC XXY ?
Will my problem is I backup my 30gig Quantum to a 80gig Maxtor drive (Just to see if it would work). So want you said, it will work because backup is bigger than original. So a friend has a new 30gig Maxtor drive, That may or may not work depending on the size of 30gig Maxtor drive to 30gig Quantum, Right ?
BTW I have not seen the Maxtor drive or know model #'s at this time, Will have drive monday.

Yes, you got it correct.
The Quantum drives are actually 30,020 megabytes in size (30.0 GB). As long as your drive is bigger than that (i.e., > 30.1 GB, say, 30.1GB or more), it'll be OK.
Of course, you're probably going to do a TiVoMad, so it's no problem for you...

So with TiVoMad, Think I should buy a 40gig or better for my "A" drive & use my 80gig for "B" drive.
Given that the 40gig is only $10 more than the 30gig :-)

Buy as big a disk as you want for the A disk.
