Read error while cloning A drive

I have a single drive Philips 212 (20 hour) with a Quantum LCT15 20Gb drive(I have 21 hours + change in worst mode in the system information screen). When I put it in my computer, it shows up as a 22.5Gb drive.

I'm trying to copy it to a slightly smaller drive, also a Quantum, but that drive shows up as 20.5Gb.

While using Dylan's boot disk and the dd command, I'm getting the following error:

hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error}
hdc: read_intr: error=0x40 {UncorrectableError}, LBAsect = 2943571, sector = 2943571
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 2943571

This is a read error on my original disk. What the heck is going on.

Other than this error, the copy seems to complete, and the number of records in and out seems to match.

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong, if anything?

Maybe you've got a bad sector. I *had* a bad section on my original A drive. I finally got around to running spinrite5 on it last week after living with it for almost a year. It manifested itself as playback freezes, until I parked a 30 minute show on it and never deleted it.

In order to run spinrite I had to make some FAT partitions on it and then run the level 5. I was fortunate in that I knew my bad sectors were near the beginning and so I got away with just making a 2GB FAT and running spinrite5 on it.

You might want to try what I did - run Quantum DPS on your drive (after unlocking it - for more details look[url=http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Forum6/HTML/005787.htmlhere[/url])

BTW, the 212 contains a special 22GB drive - your 20GB drive won't be able to hold the backup, unless you were doing a compressed backup (most likely). The last 2GB you miss contain some very important info for your TiVo to work...

And dd aborted, that's why the records in and out matched, but the backup isn't complete. You might want to try the noerror parameter to dd (as described in the FAQ).
