Looking for stutter fix with 80GB Maxtors, what about WVSET.EXE?

From Maxtor:
When performing streaming write operations (e.g. Audio, Video, downloads) additional verification of the data being written is not as important as the continuous writing of the data to the hard drive and Write Verify should be disabled. The WVSET utility can turn Write Verify off or on (forever or for a specific number of power on/off cycles). The command flag (DOS-Based, command line switches) are:
/off - Turns the Write Verify operation off
/on:nnn - Turns the Write Verify operation on for a specific number of power off/on cycles
/nnn - The number of power off/on cycles during which Write Verify is enabled. Valid values are 0 through 255. The value 0 (zero) means the Write Verify remains enabled until changed (forever).
A power cycle is the normal shutdown operations of the computer, including turning the power off. When performing benchmark operations this feature should be disabled to insure valid comparisons to other products that do not offer this capability in their product.
Maxtor hard drives are normally shipped with this feature enabled for 10 power cycles.
I have the 80 wire IDE cable and the temperature is always at normal. I only seem to have a problem with play back while the Tivo is recording at the same time. It is random, so I don’t think it is a bad area on the drive. Maybe there is some internal system tweak for units with two drives or just a large drive.
I’m just a little disappointed. I did not realize the shuttering was this common to the upgrade.
Was thinking of getting a second Tivo for conflicting shows; anyone know if I would fare any better with one 80GB drive, rather than having two 80GB drivers in the Tivo?

The WVSET utility told me it didn't support my Maxtor 60GB drive so I ignored it.
As for stuttering - you only hear from the people who have it. My upgraded TiVo doesn't.

When you say the temp is normal, are you referring to the temperature reported by the Tivo? If so, this is the ambient temp., and not the temp of any specific component. Others have reported placing a harddrive cooler on the drive reduces stuttering. To test this, I would power off the Tivo and let it sit for at least 15min, possibly with the cover off. Then, plug it back in and watch a program that you had stuttering problems with before, and see how long it takes before the stuttering reappears. If it is several minutes before the stutters appear, maybe it is the HDD overheating. Search the threads and you will see what others have done.
Also, have you tried turning off accoustic management with AMSET?

I don't believe it is very common. In fact, I've never seen any proof that it is associated with upgrades.
I have three S-A TiVos, all upgraded, and have never seen a stutter that I couldn't attribute to the digital source itself (satellite or cable). You even see them on analog sources now and then because at some point in the transmission they were digital.
In other words, all the stutters I have seen were still there when viewing the same recording again.

Unless you have a very new model, wvset should work. Try it with master setting. I have found it working fine with master but not slave.

I bought the disk in November. No real point in running WVSET now - the disk has had at least 10 power cycles since I installed it.
