APC battery backup $29.99

Just bought the APC 350va for 30 bucks at Office Max. Regularly $50.
Should give me about 11 minutes of TiVo backup...

11 minutes? More like an hour, or more, if it's just a TiVo. One of these ran my TiVo and a Dish 5000 receiver for 45 minutes - the power then came back on, so I don't know how much longer they would have run.

Their website lists it at about $90.00 was this some deal you were following? Is it local to your own store?

It was in today's flyer. However, a better deal can be found at Circuit City... the IBM 6 outlet 500VA w/ 2 line modem protection (OFFICEPRO500) for $39.99.
$99.99 - 2 $30.00 rebates.

45 minutes!!! Wow - I have my TiVom DVD and TV on the battery backup... No clue as to how many minutes it will hold on for...
It was in the Office Max Sunday ad today. Reg. $49.99 It's not the one you linked to, it's acutally this one...

This has modem protection, and actually comes with a serial cable to send a shutdown command to a PC...
I was just looking for the cheapest thing to prevent any damage...

Yeah, no TV...that's just wasting valuable battery time. I have the following on my UPS: Tivo, cable and VCR which houses the tuner for my PIP (which I thought was necessary), but after testing, it appears that it doesn't need to be on. So, I guess I just helped myself to some more minutes as well!

I realize that both rebates have separate program numbers, but both state one rebate per item. It is unclear whether this means one rebate completely, or one rebate per program number. I wonder if CC will honor both rebates. Any thoughts on this?

You can use both rebates without any problems. I bought one of these last time Circuit City had this special and got both rebates processed without a problem. That's the way they advertise it.
However, today I went to office Max and bought the $29 APC for the new Hughes DirecTivo I just bought. I didn't want to fool with sending in rebates and waiting 8 weeks or more. $29 and out the door sounded better to me!

Just a couple of things to remember:
1. Make sure your UPS has auto-restart (some don't)
2. If you use a Sat. system with a powered switch make sure it's on the UPS too. You might get a hour or two of nothing if you don't.
I've got 5 or 6 UPSs around the house, and the power went out for a few hours a week ago, you wouldn't believe the noise form all the beeping.......http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/eek.gif

Without the TV, I have no real reason to want to keep power to the Tivo. When the power goes out, the TV just keeps on going. Sure I'll get less time, but the outages in my area are usually no longer than a few minutes at a time.

The usual reason to have a TiVo on a UPS is to allow it to keep recording. Does it matter that you can't watch during an outage? The programs will be there later for you.
A small UPS can't handle the surge load of a TV - you can fry the UPS that way (take it from my personal experience with this, it's not pretty!)

Another reason is for protection. UPSs usually have decent line protection. It's better for the TiVo to keep running and not be subject to multiple on/off cycles that can occur when power outages happen. You may not see the actual power swings, but they can happen many times a second when the power goes off and when the power is restored. These swings are what kills hard drives and the switching power supplies in these units. It may also be what kills the modems as well.
Also, if you are using a cable system, in most cases the cable amps on the outside poles supplying your house are probably also out. So, your cable is out as well. But it's still better to keep the PVR going even if it's not going to be able to record anything. Another reason to go to satellite. If you've got power, you've got TV.
I recently lost power in my area for a few hours. I have a APC 1400 VA unit on my system which runs 2 sat receivers, a Replay and a TiVo plus 36" Wega TV. I was able to use the TV/SAT/TiVo system for about one hour. DON'T try this with a UPS smaller than 1000 VA!
