Will Restore From Old Image Be OK?

I read the Hack FAQ and jumped in- now I see info on MFS Tools that could have made my backup much smaller. In any case, I did a dd copy of my entire A drive (#2.18 on the Hack FAQ) and am now burning a boatload of CDs.

With that in mind, I saw #2.28 on the Hack FAQ alluding to problems with restoring a backup of an old version. I have 2.0 now, but will I be OK if my machine upgrades to 2.5 and then at a later date I need to restore my backup which now has the old 2.0? Will this cause problems updating to 2.5 again on my service account?

Does the type of backup matter for anything (other than convenience). Would there be a good reason for me to do a MFS Tools backup also (this might be tricky 'cause my PC is SCSI and runs Win2k- I don't have a C drive on the IDE and I don't have any FAT partitions)? If I should do a MFS backup, any advice on how, given my situation?

Well, you should have no problems if your TiVo started with 2.0, upgraded to 2.5, and you restored it back to 2.0. The only problems happen when say your TiVo came with 2.0, and you restore 1.3 to it.

I suggest you use MFS Tools, and check out hinsdale's mini-FAQ here
