How to edit an MFS / MLS entry?

Hi guys, I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds here but I've been putzing around with my bash prompt and I have to say, this forum is amazing. About 10 days ago, I didn't even know anything about linux, or what a bash prompt was.

I've managed to navigate around ok and I even got into the mfs info -- I know that in order to edit anything thats inside the mfs [mls /Directory] a script is going to be necessary. I've been trying to find info on how to go about doing this but information is sparse.

I'm not looking to do anything extensive... I've already managed to run dumpobj /Filename which gives a list of settings etc, but how does one modify these files? If you can write up a generic script that I can modify, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
SPEED

Folks,

I heartily agree with Speed on this, like him I'm messing around, trialling and erroring things and occassionaly breaking them to the degree I have to restore from BU.

If anybody has a good understanding of this stuff, they could achieve a place in the TiVo pantheon alongside Dylan, TiVoMad, Tridge and the others, simply by writing the "Dummies Guide to MFS". Just a few pages would do!

I agree that there are snippets of info scattered around, without them people like Speed and I wouldn't even get started, but I feel this wheel just gets continually re-invented.

Come on somebody, achieve fame!

Cheers

Aussie

Thanks for the heads up Aussie, we're probably both going to be flayed alive on this one though... I've been reading and reading for the past two weeks, until my eyes started bleeding almost. I have to say I've learned alot, but there are lots of little things that you have to get together before you can even get around in a bash prompt, let alone modify any parameters at all. Anyone who has done this on their own can testify to this fact. We need to get some good info together in one place and I'm willing to put together a faq to this end. If any of you guys are willing.

by the way, I'm trying to put together a REALLY simple script and I keep getting this error:

can't scan path (errNmNotDirectory)

what does this mean?

Thanks!

I don't know! That's the trouble! If we were dealing with a documented product we'd just look it up, correct it and be running again in a few minutes, an obvious error (which that probably is) can cost hours of futile experimentation to work around. It's exactly the kind of thing we need in the FAQ or Guide.

Unfortunately when I crashed out our TiVo (playing about with /Setup) and put it of the air for a week, my wife agreed that I could buy another just for hacking, on the condition I held off any further hacking on hers until it arrived (she just loves that TiVo!) So, I only got it last week, last weekend was spent "PALifying" it and so I haven't got too far.

I don't think we should get flayed for talking about this, Otto has specifically allowed talk regarding MFS, so long as it doesn't stray into the area of service theft. So, as long as we stick to areas such as syntax, error messages, data structures and the like we should be okay.

Cheers

Here's a simple script to update the name and description of a show. If you look at the script you can see how jpags displays and modifies the recording data. To actually USE the script, you have to do a little tinkering, since the script was made in the 1.3 era and the directories used have changed.

Hopefully this starts you on your way to understanding this stuff. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

speed- i'm in exactly the same boat as you. learning linux, tcl and playing with my tivo.

if we can get a group together, i'll gladly contribute what i've worked out, plus i have plenty of dumb questions that maybe others can learn from!

Hey guys -- I haven't really kept up with the forum for the last little bit, life has been pretty hectic. I have however made much progress with my Tivo on the bash prompt side and I think I'd be in a position to write a decent howto so all the newbies out there can get started.

Aussie [or anyone else], if you're up for the task, I could use a hand.

Let me know what you think,
SPEED
