Wireless Jacks

Can someone point me in the right direction in terms of a good (yet cheap) wireless jack setup?
Best Buy had HP wireless jacks for $60. OfficeMax had RCA wireless jacks for $60 (they also happened to look EXACTLY like the HP jacks). RadioShack had a wireless setup for $90.
I thought I read someone here got a decent wireless setup for less than $30.
Also, do these jacks transmit/receive through the electric wiring in the house, or do they do it over the air?

They put a carrier on the AC wiring. Make sure the packaging says wireless MODEM jack. There are wireless phone jacks that won't support the data rate. TiVo store has Phonex brand, and according to the Phonex web site, the RCA and Radio Shack wireless modem jacks are the same guts as the Phonex; should be good quality. I suggest you buy it at a local store that has a good return policy rather than via the web; I couldn't get the RCA wireless jack to work (due to interference from other AC devices ?) so I returned it to Home Depot.

They transmit over the AC wires.
Whichever wireless jack you get, make sure it says it is a wireless MODEM jack, not a wireless PHONE jack.
Wireless phone jacks are designed for the human voice, not modems. Vocal speech needs a lot less bandwidth than a modem. Modems are designed to use as much of the phone line bandwidth as practical, so they require a wireless jack designed to a better standard.

Will these jacks work if they are hidden behind a surge suppressor or battery backup?
All of the jacks that I've seen say that they support up to 56k (which is the TiVo modem speed), but I hear lots of complaints that the wireless jack slows down daily calls. Is it common for AC interference to slow down the TiVo call speed?
If so, I think I'll just figure out a different method of safeguarding my TiVo phoneline.

The SA Tivo's have a 33.6 modem in them not 56k. They are not supposed to be used behing surge supressors or backups but The RCA's I have on my ups backup will make daily calls without a problem though the long setup/guide call had trouble. The only reason it's connected to it is because it's in a closet and I don't want to string another cord under the door. The AC frequency doesn't effect the modem at all. It's easily filtered and is far from the data's frequency much like a phone with DSL on it.

These types of devices are not for use behind surge suppressors. They supposedly block the frequencies used by these devices, but YMMV.

Thanks for the correction on the modem speed.
I guess I'll just have to shell out the $60 for the wireless jack if I can't find a bargain soon. It's still raining daily here in Florida...

You want an RCA RC930 or Phonex PX-441. They are cheapest on Ebay.
They can be had for under $60 new on Yahoo. http://search.shopping.yahoo.com/se...=rc930&cl=dmiyg
Note that there is apparently a new verison of the RC930 that is only 33K and not 56K like the earlier ones. They supposedly look slightly different too. Not sure if there is a performance hit with the newer model or not when using 33K modem.

Be very careful people, as not all wireless jacks are created equal! I had a pair that worked just fine with my old Sony DSS Receiver, but they would not connect when I upgraded to my Philips DSR6000 (TiVo demand a higher connect speed).

$60 is a bit pricey for RC930s. You should be able to get them online for $40s. Supposedly people have had good success on Ebay around $30s. I,personally, got mine online for around $40. You can easily do a search on Yahoo shopping.

I just bought a 926 in town for $50. Looks like it only supports 14.4 Is there any way I can check my connection speed for my daily download?
HP is selling a unit that looks exactly like my 926, but the packaging on the HP unit states that it supports up to 56k.
