Ok... brief backgroud.. i have had tivo for almost 2 years. Last christmas I gave my 14 hour tivo to my parents and bought a 30 hour one.. hdr31204. Up until about 3 weeks ago all was good until a got a lightning strike that killed my modem (as well as my reciever http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif)

So I decided that I would do the basic hack to get my tivo to get a ppp conection to my linux box and get its daily updates that way. Well I had no problem with the serial port .. saw that tivo boots from partion 4 still.. etc

when i put the tivo drive in the first computer i tried (a compaq [bad idea]) it recognized it as 8 mb.. dylans bootdisk saw it as 10 mb, but did show all the partions.

When i went to mount /dev/hdc4 i got the warning "unchecked ext2 partition, you should run fsck" or whatever.. but it did mount. then i "cd /mnt". ls.. and get a dir listing. goto "cd etc" and i get 1 1/2 pages of errors about drive seek, ide channel reset, etc and the error "can't cd etc"

then i opened my linux box.. a fairly new mb (has a 40 gig drive in it) and i put the tivo quantum drive in as ide primary slave (set the jumper correct) and booted up. AMIbios sees 8 mb drive again.. i was shocked. Dylans bootdisk again recognized 10 mb. Same errors when trying to "cd etc".

the next thing i tried was the section on locked drives using the dlgchk program--reseting and booting from dylans bootdisk again. That didn't make any difference.. same errors.

the last thing i tried was to set the bios to NONE for primary slave. Reset and bios says NONE. Dylans bootdisk comes up and sees the drive and recognizes it as 10 mb again. Of course the same errors when trying to "cd etc"

what do i do now?? the only other computer i have is an IBM piece of junk pii that i don't think will recognize anything.

Search here for a link to "qunlock.exe" and run it from a dos/win bootdisk. It'll unlock the drive so it can be seen by your PC.
