Am I missing something?

I bid on a 20 hour refurb 212 on ubid the other night. I watched them finally sell for $140 to $150 plus $40 to $50 in shipping.

Now the local stores are selling new 20 hour units for $200.

Is there some magic in these old units or are people just nuts?

It's even more nutty considering www.goodguys.com is selling 30 hour Sony Tivos for $199.99 after rebate w/no tax and free shipping.

Got that right. I bid on an item (new, from what was egghead.com), but gave up when the bid price reached $100 *ABOVE* retail! (Plus, you gotta pay for shipping...).

It's not as if they had to um... go out and shop for it - they could've just searched the web for prices.

FYI - the Sony rebate program seems to have ended as of Sept. 30, 2001. Anyone know if it's been extended?

I'll answer my own question - yes, it looks like it has been extended and is now good until 3/31/02. Here's the link:

With a $100 rebate, I got a Sony SA 2000 for $179 with free shipping. I think it was orbitcomunications.com.
I also looked on ebay and just have to laugh. Everything goes for over retail it seems.

I have gotten a few bargains on Ebay, but I think a lot of people don't do the research to understand what a reasonable price is. I was looking on Ebay for a used 212 as well, and was amazed that people were bidding close to the new price from Amazon ($199). Then I found that 800.com was selling the 312 for $249, plus if your total purchase was over $300 they gave you a $50 gift certificate good for future purchases. I added a few DVDs that I was going to buy anyway making the effective price for the 312 about $200. I don't know if they still have this deal, but you might check out www.800.com
