TV/VCR button on Tivo like VCR....

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: caenus

I forgot if I asked this here, but now I have my Tivo and can't find the button, if it even exists

I want to run my coax cable (not digital cable, no box) into my tivo and then from tivo into tv...am I able to record a program say on channel 6 on my tivo, and then watch a different channel using my regular tv remote. This is possible with modern VCRs, where there is some sort of TV/VCR button on the vcr remote. Anything similar to this on Tivo, if so how?

Splitting the coax would be the easiest way.

I've already considered this as a last step. I have the video/audio signal coming from my tivo to my receiver already so splitting it wouldn't be a problem. Just need to go buy some more 1ft or 3ft cables.

If you put the Tivo in 'Standby' mode it will pass the signal through. Sony Tivo's have a standby button (i believe labeled power). With Philips Tivos it is necessary to enter standby via the menu option.

It is still probably easier to just split the cable.

Well I have a Philips Tivo, any idea which menu i'm looking for that has standby. And the tivo will continue recording, etc while in standby right?

Messages/Setup

Posted by: aciurczak

The "standby" selection with messages/setup is exactly what you are looking for; it works exactly like the tv/vcr button on vcr's. The tivo will continue to do its thing and record whatever it is supposed to; do not be alarmed that no lights are turned on on the unit. Hit the tivo button on your remote, and it will pop back to life.

However, this all works only if you have coax cable running straight to the tivo without a cable box, and you run another coax cable from the tivo output to your TV, and you are using that input on your tv. If you are using the RCA video jacks or the s-video jacks to get your signal to the TV, the picture will not get to your tv (those outputs go dark).

I'll check my setup menu again, but I didn't notice it earlier. I have version 1.3 - brand new tivo. Is this standby feature in a newer version? Also how long will it take before my Tivo updates itself to newest version? I want to add my bigger HD, preferably tomorrow.

Posted by: ADent

Yes it is a 2.0 feature.

It should upgrade within a day or two. You can try forcing a call (Make Daily Call Now) or two to see if you machine was added to the list today.

If your TV has A/V inputs you definitely want to use those for a better picture and better sound (mono only over the Coax outputs when watching TiVo, or most any consumer device for that matter). You can have it hooked up via A/V and coax at the same time and use the TV remote to switch.

FYI: In my files is a program called rf which will toggle the RF state from cable passthru to tivo. It's possible to run the program and have RF going straight through the unit without a splitter and the tivo on composite or svideo.

In other words there's nothing technical forcing you to go into standby to get RF working, it's just a limitation of the software.

Yeah, but if you would be able to pass through the cable signal out of the composite or S-Video outputs, you wouldn't be able to tune to another channel. Makes the feature rather pointless...

You misunderstood, this basically saves you having to split the cable between the tivo and any otehr av equipment. The signal comming out the RF is nolonger blocked while the tivo is on.

Damn, MBM, why didn't you say so earlier? I only watch the composite outputs, so it would be great to set the RF out to pass through (so I can use the VCR/TV).

BTW, is there any way to get tivovbi to use a font that's larger (so the captions appear in the proper places)? And what would cause an "overlay" problem - sometimes after extended use of tivovbi with onscreen captions, the output will start flashing - rectangles of various colors (transparent, mostly magenta/green, though - like the reboot magenta and the TiVo green) will appear. Sometimes it crashes the TiVo, othertimes I have to exit tivovbi and reset the menus (by going to Now Showing and back).

The reason I didn't mention the util earlier was that nobody asked for such a thing earlier - you want something you ask http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

I'll get back to the tivovbi issues eventually; got some other interesting stuff cooking for the tivo that's more fun for me to waste my time on. *g*

Heh. Perhaps now I can get rid of my splitter...

Any clues as to what other awesome hack you might have coming up?
