Which Backdoors Should Be Free?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

We all know various backdoor codes are available. There are the easy ones like 30 sec skip, and then there are the hard ones which require you to have a special password to even get into them. I was hoping to get a poll of which ones are most important to various ppl. I'm not saying that they would, but there's a chance that if there was a certain feature which every one wanted, TiVo might make that one available without requiring all backdoors enabled. So, which backdoor features are important to you? What are the features that if you could get into them without enabled backdoors, you wouldn't care about the main password? And before any one says it, I'll start it off by mentioning that TeachTiVo isn't an option....

The only REAL use that the backdoor code has for me is the ability to read the logs. Granted I really dont need to look at them, but I like to look at them just because I feel special when I do or something hehe http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
I wouldn't pay for this though....

I think the real problem here is that the backdoor password is known but most of the backdoor codes arem't; this can only mean trouble as people start mashing various keys trying to find the various backdoors. I'm not even sure all the codes ding, teachtivo on 2.0 didn't so it's likely you could wipe your tivo before ever getting a confirmation tone.
I think TiVo would be better off putting the non destructive backdoors like 30 second skip and advanced wishlists in a menu accessable after typing in the backdoor code. Having a list of "ok these are the items you can play with" is alot better than users fumbling with the keys in attempts to rember or discover the codes.
Anyways, my second favorite code is suggestions in the todo list; luckily tivoweb does this.

I agree with the idea that people shouldn't be mashing buttons with backdoors enabled, but I wouldn't make any wagers on the possibility of TiVo creating menus for them! They have though made some codes, like 30 sec skip accessable without entering the danger zone....so why not rollback offset adjusting and other non-destructive codes? That's the point, make them easy to implement, as they are now, but not require the main passwords....so what else?

I think backdoors that should be in an advanced type menu would be great. These would be useful stuff like Suggestions in the todo list, offset correction, log viewing, bascially all that has been mentioned in this thread. Then again, maybe that will be one of the upcoming "Enhanced" features.

I doubt anything will be put into menus, but putting Offset and Delay as open codes sure would save a lot of trouble for a lot of people. Even better would simply be an option to adjust the autocorrection. A simple Off/Low/Medium/High would be enough for just about everybody.
Short of autocorrection and 30 second skip, I don't see anything in the backdoors that a normal person would want, really.

Well, I know they've stated that Teach TiVo is slated for premium status, but that would be my choice if not.
[EDIT] Obviously, I didn't read all the way through your post before I hit the reply button, but I'll keep my post anyway (rather than delting it). Aside from that, the only things I care about are: autocorrect tweaks, and OCCASIONALLY reading the logs (VERY occasionally), and seeing Suggestions in the ToDo List.

Suggestions in the todo list was by far my most used feature in the 2.0 backdoors. I really hope that gets found soon in 2.5. Seems like that and the auto-correction would be better fit for the 'my preferences' section since we all seem prefer different settings.

Actually the old code is still there. I believe though that it depended on the suggestions having the "will record" marker which seems to have disappeared even from the Suggestions screen. Clear-Enter-Clear-2 still puts the black box behind the SPS9S clock but the suggestions no longer show up.

I like changing the offset and delay. I like reading the logs, even though I don't really understand them. I like the additional information you get in System Information (e.g., Uptime). I like the option of putting suggestions in the ToDo list.
I have to admit, though, that part of what I like about these features is the fact that they're _not_ generally available. (Like vertigo235, I feel special.) I think I would get less pleasure out of them if they were actual supported features. (Not that I think log-viewing ever would be a supported feature.) I wouldn't pay extra for any of them, either, even Teach TiVo.

Using C-E-C-2 to put the planned Tivo suggestion recordings on the Todo list is by far the most useful backdoor feature and I do wish that would make enabling it easier or just build it into the regular product. I would even like it if it was a read-only list that didn't allow manual deletion of planned suggestion recordings. I just think it's useful for several different reasons to see the list.
