Can I use Tivo service w/o phone line?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Howdy Folks,

It's been forever since I've been here. Pardon the dumb/repeated questions but here goes:

I want to get rid of my normal phone line and only live off my cell phone and cable internet access. But I need the phone line for tivo's stupid modem to call in an get guide data. I "think" i remember long time ago when I used to participate here ( 6 months or longer ago ) that someone created a hack or something to let them use their internet access to get this guide data.

Is this true or did I take too many hits off the bong and dream this up?

please point me to any relavant threads if this is possible.

Thanks,

J

Options:

Standalone
1 TiVoNET
2 Some way to use your cell phone as connection
2 Keep the land line as an internet backup/fax/TiVo/911 line

Combo
1 DirecTV requires a full time land line, no exceptions per their customer service unless you set up as service for an RV and they put you through bloody hell to get that

Just to clarify JJ's reply,

TiVoNet is a fancy name for an Ethernet ISA card you can plug into your TiVo and add to your cable modem network. I presume you have a Linksys or other router for sharing?

Cell phone won't work as the bandwidth is simply too low to support a modem.

You could also connect your TiVo directly to your PC thru the serial port, if you have a lot of time on your hands and are willing to configure a remote access point on your computer to relay all of TiVo's requests.

TivoNet?

What is that? Any good links here in AVSForum about it. Where can i buy it, how to install configure, etc.

Basically is there a TiVoNET FAQ anywhere?

Thanks,

Jason

You want the TiVo Underground forum. Use the search button with that forum as the target to find TiVoNet. Plan on reading a lot before you ask your next question.

larry,

TiVoNet still hasn't been reduced to a streamlined FAQ yet? What a shame.

TiVoNet boards are available from:

I've been running my Tivos over ethernet for several months now, no problems at all. I'm hoping when 2.5 comes out it won't adversely affect it, because I don't have phone lines anywhere near my tivos.
