Tivo Marketing Idea

Having just gotten a DirecTivo unit, I'm amazed at how useful this gadget is. As a marketing professional, I'm also amazed at how bad Tivo's marketing effort has been.

The long and the short if it is, Tivo can't rely on electronics vendors to move their product. I visited 4 CC and 2 Best Buys and a Tweeter - none of which had a single unit set up to play with (one had a UTV going). And hands-on sells this thing!

Since Tivo has a rabid fan base (you guys) and a cash crunch, why not formally enlist the users to help move this thing? Us gearheads love showing off anyway - why not give us a little incentive to sign up our friends?

It's been done before to great success - call it a Tivoware party.

It's real simple. Invite a bunch of friends over to watch the game and see how this Tivo thing works. After the usual responses of "Holy s**t!" give us a way to close the deal. Tivo sets up a web site that the current user can log on to, punch his Tivo account number, and print out coupons for his friends. Each coupon contains an ID number specific to the party-thrower. The coupon can offer new subscribers three free months of Tivo service, or whatever Tivo wants.

When a new guy signs up, he gives the operator the coupon number. He gets his free intro, Tivo gets a new subscriber, and the party-thrower gets a free month of service for each new subscriber he pulls in.

Hell, AOL does it...

Cost: virtually nothing. And, come on, everyone on this forum has at least three or four friends they could sign up with a little help.

Tivo's strength is it's happy customer base, not it's ability to by commercial time. Use it!

Not a bad idea! I just noticed in this sundays ad for CC that they are having a "demo" month. Utv is demo-ing all month but no TiVo!!??

An idea very similar to this has been discussed here at length. I think we all agree that it would be a great idea.

TiVo did have Demo Days last year, where a reprsentative would be in local Best Buys and CCs showing off TiVo. I haven't heard of any plans to bring something like that back.
