Best Buy extended warranty on Sony
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, my 9 month old Tivo (Sony SA) modem died. Take it to Best Buy for exchange. Although the sales droid had promised an over the counter exchange, they sent it off for 'repair' A week goes by and I call the service center for an update. I am told it was sent to Sony and would be and ADDITIONAL 3 WEEKS. A whole month witout a TIVO? For me this is really unacceptable as witout Tivo, my home theater has no tuner as the SVideo drives my projector directly. Is this typical of how Best Buy has handled warranty claims for others' Tivos?
Boy am I bummed. Thinking about just buying a new one and holding the repaired one as 'spare' when it returns. Any way to work this without having to buy an additional lifetime service?
Any good prices on Sony SA tivos out there?

Buried deep in another thread was a post from a BB emplyee who said that Phillips Tivo's are exchanged under the EW while Sony's are sent for repair. Thus it sounds like 9reinforced by your experience) that we whould buy Phillips rather than Sony if buying from BB.

If you have to exchange a Philips, you will most probably get a refurbished model, even within the 90 day warranty period. If you have an extended warranty, then Philips can repair or replace. Peter.

Best buy simply swaps you out for a new Tivo if its a Phillips and you have the EW....

There have also been posts on here saying the situation is the same at CC. Sony requires you to send it in for repair (after 30 days), while Philips allows exchanges. I bet it's probably a similar story at most retailers. Of course, sometimes the retailers' idiocy works in our favor and they can be convinced to give an immediate exchange.

My recent lightning strike fried the modem in both a Sony standalone and a Philips standalone, both with Circuit City Warranties. Circuit City would swap neither of them, and both are "gone to the repair center". I have no idea how long it will be, but am assuming several weeks (took 3 weeks the first time).
I picked up a 20-hour for $199 to hold me in the meantime. It'll come in handy for conflict resolution on Thursday nights when the others come back, but a month without Tivo, most especially the month all the season premieres are, just wasn't worth it.

THe following was my experience with A Circuit City Extended warranty on hacked a Sony SVR 2000:
I purchased open box svr2000 and 3 year warranty in 2/2001. Modem was fried in storm on 7/5/2001, did not realize it was not dialing out until ran out of Sub info around 7/18, 2001 (was on vacation), I restored hard drives to factory config and brought to CC (Ledgewood, NJ), clearly indicating that the 'modem was fried' and that I wanted new unit.
They declined and they sent out to CC depot for repair...one week later they informed me that it had to go to SONY for the repair, - they did not have a Sony SA 'open box' as a loaner, but offered me a T-60 - I declined for obvious reasons...3 weeks later on 8/22, I rec'd 'repaired' unit, brought home, IT WAS STILL FRIED, c/n dial out. Sony had not repaired the problem!
I went back to store, was polite but firm that I wanted a new unit...they again said no, that it would have to go to SONY...I attempted to be flexible, even offered to buy a new SVR2000 unit (They had some new in stock) and return so they would have an 'open box' to lend me! - Manager declined, and then it appears that since I was polite and patient he suddenly informed me he would refund me my money and sell me a new SVR2000 for net cost of $0...So they opened a new svr2000 box, gave it to me, and said they would have Sony repair the original unit and then sell as an open box...I also traded in my remote, so walked out with brand new svr2000 and remote, no box or cables or docs, but a shiny new working unit with a extended warranty until 8/2004! - Even had a rebate coupon, but no box and therefore no UPC, so no rebate for me!
Called tivo, and they swapped lifetime sub - No problem.
Was a hassle waiting for CC, but in end they took care of me - I was back on-line that night, after a full month of no tivo.
