Bizarre ppp problems with 2.5.1

After the 2.5.1 upgrade came through I waited a while to reenable ppp over the directv port. However, now after setting it back up (identically to before, as far as I can tell) I have some very odd problems - if I ping the tivo, it drops exactly every other ping packet. Telnetting to it, it echos all of my characters back to me twice. However, if I start up a telnet daemon on another port (ie, not 23), it behaves normally. Killing the telnet daemon on 23 and restarting it produces identical, bad, results. As far as I can tell the networking/firewall configuration on the other end of the ppp connection (Debian unstable, Linux 2.4.whatever) is the same. Anyone seen anything similar to this? I'm kindof at a loss as to what might be causing this sort of behavior...

Evidence suggests the pppd that is included in 2.5 is somewhat flaky. Try copying the pppd from your 2.0 partition onto your 2.5 parition and see if it works better.

Thanks for the hint. Unfortunately, I was part of the 2.5 beta and thus don't have a 2.0 partition any more (didn't ever try to get ppp working again during the beta...). Anyone mind zipping me a copy of the 2.0 pppd, gzipped or otherwise? I'd appreciate it... chris+tivo@chiappa.net if anyone is willing.
