I had a "VCR MOMENT" last night

Last night, my season pass worked successfully, and recorded Weakest Link. The wife and I flip on the TV and prepare to watch it, but get caught in what I call "suck-o-vision" -- ie, you see something that looks mildly interesting, and get sucked into watching it, even though you had not planned to. Anyway, Dateline is on, and I'm about to get sucked in, when my wife says, "You know you can hit record, and we can watch Weakest Link. Then you can go back and watch Dateline, and skip the boring parts, and the commercials.
Now why didn't I think of that! It had to be a "VCR Moment". Even after having a Tivo since May, I still think like a VCR, instead of a Tivo. Help!
A final note, the technology has to be good for my wife to be hooked on it.

Eventually you will have a TiVo moment while watching something on your VCR. I tape lower priority stuff that conflicts with TiVo. While I'm watching it I'll hit FF twice when a commercial comes on ... Doh FF twice on the VCR don't work!
I was away last week and filled up an 8-hour tape in addition to what I TiVo'd. I started watching it last night and boy do a few things suck on a VCR. I'd watched the first 3 hours of shows while I was away, so I had to FF through a bunch of the tape. And the VCR doesn't do FF compensation, so I always overshoot. Maybe I'll have to get a 2nd TiVo someday. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Get an RCA VCR with commercial advance. Just lay there and watch your shows, hands free, a little 15 seconds of automatic blue screens and motor whirring during commercial breaks.

First rule of TiVo, never watch Live TV.
If something strange happens and you find yourself sitting down to watch TV just at the same time a new hyped show starts RESIST - DON'T start watching it yet. Find something to do, wash the dishes, pop some corn, walk the dogs, anything, the longer the better. Then go back, watch the program and FF (or with DirectTivo 2.5 and secret code SPS30S quickskip) forward through all those crass commercial breaks. Although you will probably get stuck watching some because it is hard to procrastinate long enough to save up enough time to skip an entire shows worth of commercials!

Yep. My rule is to hit TiVo twice just before I hit my TV power button.

I have found myself watching live TV and trying to fast forward through the commercials. I look at the remote in bewilderment for a while then I realize why it isn't working.
