TiVoNET Question
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

When using TiVoNET through my router/gateway, does my TiVo actually connect to the TiVo service through the Internet so that I will still get software upgrades, account info, and messages?
Or does it download from a location where someone posts the data?
Before I do the upgrade, I wanted to make sure it was basically the same as calling, just faster, and cheaper (since I'll be able to disconnect my land line now).
Thx!

The former. It's exactly the same as calling up via the phone line except faster and easier. TiVo customer service still has logs of all my calls, and I got the software update via ethernet. If I were getting th data from somewhere else, neither of these things would have happened.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Tivo provides an ethernet download service for people who hacked their machines?

TiVo provides a download service for all of its subscribers - unmodified or hacked. It all comes from the same place - either you use a phone to connect or via internet. Its cheaper for tivo via the internet (saves cost of phone call) so that is not discouraged.

What hinsdale meant is that when your TiVo does a daily call, all it's doing is calling a TiVo-sponsored ISP (UUNet) in which it connects to TiVo's computers and downloads the requisite data. TiVoNet does the same, except just doing it without the dialup connection.
Before you get the idea of 'stealing' internet service from TiVo, know that they've limited the domains you can visit from the TiVo account to TiVo computers only.

Are there other guide data that can be used on the TiVo? I know the tvguide has free data which I think is used by ATI Radeon video cards. Is this data usable on the a TiVo unit and accessible via the net?

Nope.
TiVo uses TiVo service only.
If you object, return your TiVo and use your Radeon.

Heck no, my Radeon is ok, but nowhere near as easy to use as Tivo.
Just wondering. Thanks.

Don't sweat it. You've just run into one of the two banned topics on the board: extracting recordings from the TiVo digitally, and circumventing the TiVo service.

Luckily, what's not banned is recommending other devices if it seems more appropriate to their needs. If someone complains about cost, it's possible to direct them to return their TiVo and just buy a ReplayTV, etc. TiVo's nice, but doesn't satisfy everyone, so at least we have the freedom to recommend something else. (OTOH, it gives us peace of mind - we don't have to worry about something who is really dissatisfied with their TiVo complaining all over the TiVo boards [Anyone remember Richard Gray (IIRC)?]).
