Modem Fried - What are my options

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have had my Tivo for a little over a year and it was working fine. No longer works, can't dial out and does not seem to have dial tone. Customer Service said the modem is dead. They want $180 to fix the modem - what are my other options.

You could also sell it to anyone who uses it un-subbed, i.e. people in non-Tivo countries, or for people who just want to hack around on a spare box.

I think I'd pay $50 for an s/a with dead modem and no hard drive.

better yet, if you have broadband and have wanted to try out TivoWeb, then install TivoNet and you'll kill 2 birds with one stone.

If you're intent on selling it, I'm sure you can start a small bidding war b/c know I could use one more *grin*

For TiVoWeb alone, a serial connection is adequate, and is about $100 cheaper (the only hardware you need is a null modem adapter, or perhaps a custom cable). Check http://www.pineaus.com/HOWTO/Tivo-DSL-HOWTO.html for more information on this option. The main drawback compared to TiVoNet is that the serial connection is slower (but still faster than the TiVo's regular modem). The cabling issues are also different from those with TiVoNet.

I also suggest electriclegs. I got fast turnaround, within
a week and it only cost me about $94.00, $50 for the work and the rest in postage. Plus you can keep all the settings, recording that you currently have.

I wish I could help on the shipping but fast shipping costs $. If you can live with UPS ground it usually about $13 or less each way unless the shippers' doubling the price. It'll take an extra week but cuts the shipping in half. Office Depot ships UPS for the lowest rates.
