40 gig a drive in Tivo HDR112

Hi,
I just got my first Tivo and I already have a 40gig HD that I would like to put in it. I am thinking that I might replace the 14gig HD, rather than add the 40gigger on as a B-drive. This is because I figure that I will add a second large drive in the future when the prices come down some more. What do yall think ?
Whats the best way to copy my 14gig A-drive image onto my new 40gig A-Drive ? Do I need to use madTivo to expand the A-Drive image to allow it to use the full 40 gigs ?
Thanks,
Merkurmaniac

Ok go here www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to and print out this guide read it carefully 2 or 3 times. I would install your 40 GB as B: and keep the 14 GB as A: If you follow the instructions you will have a backup copy of your original 14GB software so later you can reconfigure and add more space. This should give you 50 hrs or so of recording time at basic. Read the how to and post back here for questions. Do you work at mustang cat on I-10 and are you an Aggie by any chance? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes, I work for mustang on I-10 and I am a class of '91 Agroid.
I have read it over a few times, and here is my thinking. I want to REPLACE the 14 gig drive for a few reasons. I figure that down the road, I will want to add another big drive, and removing the 14 at a later date (un-blessing ?? )seems like it might end up being a hassle. My plan is to shrink down the required image on my 14gig so that it might fit on a CDROM. I would like to save my current A-drive as my backup long enough to verify that the 40 gigger works and then probably sell it on eBay. I could put this toward a bigger drive down the road. I would like to make provisions to now so that I would add an 80 gig drive or whatever in the future.
TIA,
Richard

Heres what I did with my Sony SA. It had a 30GB front the factory. I backed up the image then restored it to my 80GB that I was going to install, installed it as a: to test the image it was ok. then back to the computer and I just blessed it installed in the B: with jumpers set to slave installed the original A: back as A: and had 116 hrs later I removed it and restored my ORIGINAL software to my original A: in the TiVo and turned it back to a 30 hr machine. Long story short its pretty easy to reconfig the drives if you have the original image. Do you think you will get that much for the drive on e-bay? I have one that I will probably install in a HDR112 that I am going to remove the 80 GB out of to put in my sisters Sony, she has dish network and cant use the dTiVos so she needs the room. I think you will find real quick that a 40 hr TiVo is lacking and that extra 15 GB might tide you over for a while

What is the best software to use to make the kind of change that I am talking about ?
i.e.
Remove current a: drive
make small backup of 14gig (hopefully on one CD ROM)
copy only required contents from a: to 40 gig drive.
Install single 40 gig drive in machine.
BTW, looks like the 14hour drive might go for as much as $50 on eBay.

Go to www.9thtee.com/tivobootcd.htm and download the Kazymyr boot cd and burn an image if you cant burn an image you can order it from 9thtee you will also need a bracket from them to install a second drive on a SA. You can also use a floopy boot disk but I am not experenced with that method. This is what Hinsdales how to is based on. This is what I used.

I would suggest using the 40gb drive as your B instead of replacing your A drive. There is apparently some aboration with TiVo OS v2.5.1 and TiVoMad 3.2 and 40gb drives that results in only approximately 32.5 hours instead of the expected 45.5. Havent seen/determined the cause but it seems to be a universal result. I believe it may have to do with the TiVo's reserved space which is dependent upon available space.

O.K., what if I change plans and purchase an 80 gig drive. Then I would like to do the following:
pull current a: drive
make back up copy onto a CD ROM
copy a: image to 80 gig drive
expand a: image to fill 80 gig drive.
get rid of current 14 gig drive and current 40 gig drive.
buy second 100 gig drive or whatever in a year or so, when I figure that prices will have come down substantially.
Will I have the same kind of "lost" storage space if I have a stand alone 80 gig as my a: drive ?
Thanks,
Richard

Hinsdale,
I put a 60GB drive as the B drive into a Philips DSR6000 (DirecTivo). I went from 35 hours to 86 hours, a gain of 51 hours. Does that sound right to you? Thanks.

I think you're making a faulty assumption here. You can't simply add another drive once you've expanded onto a larger A drive. The upgrade process requires you to create a backup and redo the expansion process, losing your recordings in the process. You should go ahead and place the two largest drives in your unit now. If and when you decide to upgrade furthur, the process will be the same.
