You should be getting ~175 hours with the 30+120 drives. Apparently, something went wrong with your upgrade and it will need to be redone to get the full capacity.

Well I haven't done the harddrive upgrade yet.

But my TivoNet upgrade went pretty smooth. The stock scripts complained about the spare root partition but I found a set of scripts for just the currently in use root partition and went just fine after that.

Added a 120GB Western Digital drive to the old 30GB A drive. I have 50hrs at best quality.

The only problem I had with the drive was that I had to unlock the A drive twice and bless the B drive twice. Works like a charm.

181 Basic quality hours.
The 120GB drive is my B drive.

Posted by: ozguy

I added 2 maxtor 80 gig 536dx (5400rpm, 9ms)drives 2 months ago, for 198 hours of basic (about 56 hours in best quality) with good performance since.

The temp is always stays around 39 degrees, so heat is no problem, they are very quiet as well.

The only install issues l had was due to my PC having SCSI hard drives, and the drivers not being installed, and a bios issue (latest bios did not recognize large drives). Used my wifes PC, and all went well.

Posted by: Tivo_licious

Tanqueray Thanks for the info.. now i know im not getting the same hours as you.. since pretty much your upgrade is identical as mine ( 120GB+30GB).. im gonna have it re-done sometime next week.. since you get 181HRS basic quality.. im getting 40HRS less on mine with the same 2 drives.. thanks again for the info

I upgraded my SRV-2000 today. Didn't take long to do. Used the bootable CD to do it. The only problem I had was mounting the drive.

120+ basic time now. Woot!

Replaced A-drive with a Maxtor 80GB. Slave IDE is hooked into a removable drive bay that sticks out the front (very neat, will take pictures once I figure out how to make it not look like ass).

I did the same thing as "bpinson":

Replaced SVR2000 30GB with 100GB, keeping the original as a fallback spare.

Same times after the upgrade as well:
115 hrs, 3 min (basic)
31 hrs, 46 min (best)
Version 2.5.1

I also made an image of the original so that I can make the system a dual-drive once the 160GB drives are more readily available.

I upgraded mine to a 120 gig. Bought a 30 gig SVR-2000 in December and found out it had a 40 gig drive in it from the factory, and added a Maxtor 80 gig to it. It already had 2.5.1 software from the factory.

Being new to TiVo and a little scared about upgrading, I thought it best to get a Quantum-designed Maxtor D-540X 80 gig. Now it has 126 hours in basic quality, 56 hours in high, and 36 hours in best quality with no stuttering or change in temperature (35C). It's noisier, but only to the point of now being barely audible in a quiet room when it was nearly silent with one drive. Using the drive bracket from 9th Tee helps keep it quiet because of the rubber mounts.

I did some stupid things when I attempted to upgrade, hosed my original drive image and ended up buying a second SVR-2000 to save my first one. So my advice would be: Be sure and make a good backup of your original drive with MFS Tool, preferably without copying the /var partition (let MFS Tool build one on Restore)--even if all you are doing is adding a drive. Burn this backup to a CD-R. It's easier to do a restore from a burned CD than to try to restore from a Windows hard drive, IMHO.

A good way to make sure you have a working backup is to restore it to your second drive and test it as the "A" drive in your TiVo. When you get around to installing your second drive, BlessTiVo will erase that restore anyway, so it's okay to use your second drive to check your backup.

And don't run TiVoMad until it is upgraded to work with 2.5.1 and 13-partition drives. If you use the boot floppy disk, skip out of the script questions like Hinsdale tells you--don't let it write to your original drive! Kazymyr's boot CD is the way to go if you have the abilty to burn a CD.

Hinsdale covers it all in his How-To. Something really important is to not boot Windows 2000 (or XP) with the TiVo drives attached to your PC, as Windows will write a signature to any attached drives. The signature will make things difficult for you when Linux tries to write to the drives later.

If you've got friends with Philips TiVos, they might lend you a drive image to restore your TiVo if you mess yours up like I did. A Sony TiVo will boot with a Philips drive image, but the remote control codes are different, so you won't be able to use it. Also, the Philips version of the software has "TiVo from Philips" all over its animated backgrounds, which is a little weird on a Sony machine.

SVR2000 with 2.5.1

I downgraded to a 2.0.1 image and upgraded with two Maxtor 160 GB to get 344 hours and 30 minutes.

Posted by: donathan

I bought my Sony SVR-2000 at Christmas Time. It came loaded with The new 2.5.1 on it.

I bought myself two 80Gb Maxtor HDD for the upgrade.

I tried ( and tried ) to upgrade it and had it stall at the "Just a few seconds more" screen.

After watching the boards it was apparent that I had one of the new versions that could not be upgraded.

I then just blessed the second drive which gave me more space.
But I really did want to use both drives to their full capacity.

I located a 2.0.1 version backup and then redid the A drive.
After that I was able to use TiVoMAD to expand the A drive and add the B drive too.

Thanks to all ! Success at last ! I Now have...

Best Quality - 53 Hours - 13 Minutes
High Quality - 86 Hours - 22 Minutes
Medium Quality - 114 Hours - 28 Minutes
Basic Quality - 193 Hours - 40 Minutes

after many weeks and delays, i finally re-blessed my SVR-2000 (30GB+120GB)

has this results before the Re-Bless

A:drive 120GB 39hrs best
B:drive 30GB 144hrs basic

Results after the Re-Bless

A:drive 30GB 50hrs best
B:drive 120GB 182hrs basic

gained 11hrs Best / 37 Basic by switchng the drives.. which is interesting to say the least.

I got an open box SVR-2000 from best buy for $150.

Had a 30-gig quantum in there, and I managed to hose the drive while trying to back it up (overwrote the MBR while trying to back it up!). Got an image from nice folks here and reinstalled the 30 gig drive, it worked again, so i just blessed a 120 gig drive and added it as B. No problems at all since.

I have 184 hours in basic, 51 hours in best.

I'm thrilled!

Installed new Maxtor 160G A drive - got it on sale for less $ per GB than 120G, even considering 137GB yield. Original A drive (40G with 13-partition 2.5.1) is safely stored away as backup. Restored 2.0.1 image (obtained from post here last week - thanks to hinsdale and jimland) and ran TivoMad at the same time.

Setup ran smoothly until first call to Tivo - the "Cleaning up" step just before the call took over an hour, with the little propeller turning very slowly - a quarter turn every 5 sec. Eventually worked, system upgraded to 2.5.1 on second call. Entire process took about 3 hours.

Bottom line - now have 163 hours basic.

I have the Sony PVR-2000 which had a single Quantum Fireball 30GB drive which I just upgraded yesterday with 2 new WD 120GB drives and now have:

81 hrs, 55 mins (Best Quality)
298 hrs, 47 min (Basic Quality)

I am running Software Version: 2.5.1-01-1-010 (it was upgraded to and not came with as I bough the Tivo a few weeks after it came out) and had not problems with the upgrade.

Considering you are losing space in the bargain, would it have been better to just get the 120GB or even 2 80GB drives?

Yeah, it kind of burns me to have 23GB I can't use. Still, got an additional 17GB for just a few $ more than the 120GB would have cost. Plus, I can add a B drive later when I fill this one up. With 2 80s, I can't expand without tossing one (or both) of the 80s. Although I'm sure I could find a good use for them!

SVR-2000 upgraded with a 120GB/7200RPM Maxtor as A: and a 40GB/5400RPM Maxtor as B: -- my original 30GB hard drive is locked in a safety deposit box (or is it under my bed?)

Quatum 40gig "A" drive (Backup of original drive, Backup is now the working drive) Maxtor 80gig "B" drive.

Memory to 32mem (Think's it still working not in front of it :-P )

145 hrs

From Tivo Central:
Go into "Messages and Setup"
Then go into "System Information"

The software version should be the 2nd or 3rd line.

Posted by: crazywater

Added a Maxtor 80G drive with a new "A" drive and experienced horrible stuttering. Removed it and readded it with the original "A" drive with same results. Removed it, reinstalled the original "A" drive and a Quantum 30G drive as the "B" drive. Been working fine ever since.

2x Maxtor 540DX 80GB drives. Upgraded entirely with MFS Tools 2.0

Posted by: falz

Replaced Quantum 'A' drive w/ 80gig Maxtor 5400rpm. Keeping old 30gig as spare. I hardly watch all that it TiVo's now, so I couldnt see upgrading further.
