How to use Tivo to duplicate videos

How can I play a video in my VCR and record it onto Tivo? I have videos of several sporting events that I need to copy from time to time. (I want to trade them to other folks to get games I don't have.) I was thinking I could play one in my VCR and have Tivo record it while it plays. Then I could put a blank tape in the VCR and have Tivo download it to the VCR.
Is this possible?

I have copied several old home videos to Tivos. If I remember correctly, I switched the cable set up to direct the program from my VCR to Tivo (instead of the normal set up); had the Tivo and VCR tuned to channel 3; had the VCR
set to VCR instead of TV; pushed record on Tivo; played the VCR tape; and the material was copied to Tivo. The recording will have the name of the program normally
on channel 3 (in my case, Headline News).
Another point - you can set a manual recording for plenty of time to cover what you want to record. If you monitor the copying you can stop the recording when you wish and have a "partial recording" covering your new material.
If the material you copy is something you wish to keep for a while you should select "Save Until I Delete".
All this information is on the assumption that you have cable. If you do not have cable, or if the quality is not good enough, you might try the procedure discussed in the
following FAQ:

Once you have some recordings there is enough information to prepare a written index or summary.
My channel 3 has Headline News. When a recording is completed it will be listed under Now Showing as follows:
Headline News Tue 10/24
When the right arrow is used, much more information appears, including:
Tue 10/24 4:45 pm 3 CNNH
Duration: 4:20 (Partial)
Video: Best Quality
From this information I can prepare an index, such as:
Aunt Mary's Family (Headline News Tue 10/24; 4:45 pm; 4:20)
Colorado Trip (Headline News Sun 10/8; 9:00 pm; 0:43)
etc.

Thanks. I have cable. I'll give this a try but I am not nearly as tech proficient as most of the people on this board.
BTW, when you say you prepare an index, you mean on a piece of paper, right?

Yes.
Good luck with your project.

Hmmmmm, have we invented a way to makd our own DVDs from Video Tapes? What would Jack Valenti say? http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/mad.gif (this is NOT a pic of Jack, but an incredible simulation)
