I don't know if this has been posted before, but I noticed, quite by accident, that if I mash down in the center the vol up/down button causing both up and down to be pushed at the same time, my TV mutes. Works to unmute as well. This could be specific to the Sony tv I'm using, but if it is a shortcut in the remote that would be neat too http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif I can't get the same effects using a universal remote (the remote that came with the TV is long gone)

Yes, it's a little known trick that also works for stereo receivers.

FWIW, the UK TiVo has a mute button on the remote control.

Well, so do the Sony and Philips tivos in the US!! http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/tongue.gif!! This is a trick that can only be done on the philips remotes since the sony remotes have 2 different buttons for volume up and volume down.
