Sony 2000 without Tivo

I bought a Sony 2000 "open box". It had the previous owners channels, etc. After restoring it to zipcode 999 etc, I found that it was impossible to make the critical "second phone call" without registering.
I registered and am so far happy, but, I believe , contrary to claims, this box is useless without Tivo. I couldn't even use antenna channels. Channel window blank.
Unless I missed something here ?
Thanks, Bob

You can still cache the previous 30-min of TV for replays, etc...without subscribing. Is that what you mean? Hope this helps.

No, I could see how I could do anything because it had "no channels'.
Looking at manual record, the channel box is just black. Times etc were there. Like there was no tuner inside the box, not even 2-69 antenna channels.
Then after calling and subscribing (you can't use the website due to the serial # being previously registered), I was able to call in the "second phone call" and download my required stuff.
It has been pretty fantastic.

Well, every new TiVo comes with a two or three day grace period in which you can download the guide data. This would enable all the channels even if someone didn't subscribe to the service. However, if a lineup changed or something, the Manual Recording could become very tricky... http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

Yes, I perceive that is the problem. Mine had first buyer's area channels & specific Directv stuff in it. When I wiped that out, I had nothing and you don't get a second 3 day grace offered. You can't even get it to recognize air channels.
TIVO menu service is wonderful, though.
