Keeping a few kids programs

I'm not SURE this works, but I am in the midst of trying it.

I like to have an available episode of "Arthur" and an episode of "Out of the Box" for my daughter at all times. These shows seem to be on frequently. I don't really care (nor does she) which episode, and I don't want my TiVo spending hours each day recording a new one and deleting the old one since it could be looking for suggestions in that time or recording something I prefer.

So here are my Season Pass settings for Arthur.
Recording Quality: Basic
Keep at Most: One Episode
Save Until: I Delete

So I think this will record one and keep it forever and not bother trying to record more. When she watches it, she can delete it and a couple hours later it will grab a new one.

I really like the KAM function.

I handle my local news using:

Keep At Most: One Episode
Save Until: Space Needed

That way, I always have the most recent.

I do this a lot! I have about 10 season passes that setup various "dad-approved" shows all with KAM once. It really helps out when you need to distract your kid with a quick episode of Sesame Street.

Some issues: Set the Save Until: space needed. That way it will erase your poor kids show when you run out of space instead of your precious Sopranos Episode.

Watch out for lots of repeats! Some of the kids shows on my list are repeated 3 or 4 times a day on a given channel. Some don't include any episode information so Tivo records all of them. Some do include information, but show different episodes at different times (The simpsons!) The KAM=1 makes sure that they don't eat up disk space, and I put them low on the priority list to keep them from conflicting with my shows. However they do prevent many Suggestions from being recorded.

You may want to enable Parental controls. As your kids get Tivo savvy (It won't be long, my six year old is a wiz) you may not want your kids watching certain shows. This is important if you have Suggestions enabled, since Tivo may decide to record stuff that is not "family friendly". (especially if you are a Sopranos fan). I have mine set very liberally (No TVMA /R or higher) but to each his own.

I didn't read your post carefully enough. You are asking if you set to Keep until:I delete than it won't record the other shows? Good question. I will have to try it myself.

Another good KAM most story: My son likes the Simpsons, so I setup a Simpsons Season Pass with a KAM=2. However Channel 5 FOX shows two episodes of the Simpsons everyday, along with the primetime Sunday episode. I sat down Monday night to watch Sunday's Simpson episode (a new one!). Oops, I only had the 6:30 and 7:30 rerun episodes.

One problem is that you can't have create two season passes for the same show on the same channel. However that rule doesn't apply to Wishlists.
Solution:
One recording WISHLISTS with KAM=2,reruns enabled, Keep Until=space available.
One Season Pass KAM=all, first run only, keep until I delete.
Set the Simpsons Wishlist with a very low season pass priority (higher than the Simpsons Season Pass).
Seems to work.

I have checked. Yes, it does work as I supposed initially. But I very much appreciate your suggestion on being careful that I am not preserving an "Arthur" until I delete while my TiVo is required to delete something far more precious to me.

Fortunately, I recently upgraded my capacity, and I'll be able to see this in advance, except maybe for an extended vacation.

There is always one episode of Sesame Street on each TiVo in the house at any moment. If they're going to be engrossed in a show, that's the one I want then to have. It did wonders for me back in the 70's and I can see my 4 year old daughter learning a lot from the show already.

David,
Thanks for the suggestion. I did the KAM=2 for most of my kid's show, but I always saw the ToDo List filled with all the other episodes, which I had to manually delete so that Tivo could capture other Suggestions. Will try your suggestion of Save Until Space Needed tonight.

As far as Parental Controls, I wish you would have this on commercials!! My 7yo son recently watched an episode of BattleBots and is now hooked. But since some of the shows are aired late night, and being that it's on Comedy Central, some of the commercials are pretty racy for a 7yo. Now he wants to see South Park after watching the commercials for it. Absolutely not I told him.

Off Topic: anybody know where BattleBots is taped? I think it would be a great outing for a birthday party!

It varies. They only do a few each year, so it's not like an ongoing thing. The next one is Memorial Day weekend, May 22 - 28, and is being held at the Ft. Mason Center Festival Pavilion in San Francisco.

Of course, instead of just attending you could actually compete and thereby win a few thousand dollars to offset the cost of the trip!

Yeah sure http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/rolleyes.gif. With my talent at building things I'll probably start off and run into one of those buzzsaws! Say......that's not a bad idea, build a battlebot that would explode at first contact with the oponent. Wouldn't I thereby win since I inflicted damage on the opponent??? http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/biggrin.gif

Battlebots. My 7 year old loves em too. But even the announcers are not g rated. Heard the guy say (I hope this is ok here..I'll * it) " Whoa, he b*tch slapped him". How do you explain "*** slapped to a 7 year old?

BTW. A new PC game "robot arena" is out that is similar to BB. I looked for a trainer to give my kid some cash. $10K at a time. I went to ask how he was doing. He had 347K amassed. BEFORE I got the trainer. That is alot of robots.

Another excellent show is Dragon Tales. Every episode teaching a value. My kids go ga-ga over these cute talking dragons.

I do the same thing, keep only 1. I did notice that if TIVO finds a Dragon Tales show on, it will record it over the last one. So if you are hoping to catch suggestions during this time slot forget it. However someone posted this suggestion about 1.3 a while back (not in this forum, I forget where), so I don't know if this will still work in 2.0.1:

Say Dragon Tales is on your Season Pass list. You go into the To-Do List and see that the show is on at 11:30am and 3:00pm. Say you only want it to record the 3:00pm showing. You delete all occurrences of the 11:30am showing from the To-Do list. TiVo supposedly will remember that when building future To-Do lists, omtting the 11:30am showing.

Now I haven't tried this, but this might solve the wasted recording-over-itself syndrome.

BattleBots is a show where I realize how much I love my TiVO. I fast forward over everything except the 3 actual battle each show. Forget that drivel from Bill Nye. What the hell is he talking about anyway? I don't think he knows... I've never seen such a rapid-fire spewing of technical terms that didn't have a chemical bond to keep coherency. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/redface.gif

Yeah, I remember the bit about the dealer at the corner trying to push illicit letters onto Ernie. "Hey, psst, kid. Wanna buy a C?" Do they still have that bit in the show, or did the dealer buy it in a shootout with the Letter People out in front of the Electric Company?
