Don't have time to watch that LONG movie?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I had never seen the Godfather. TiVoed it the other day, but it is four hours long - including commercials.
I have a 14 hour unit, so when a four hour movie goes on it that I want to watch, I need to do it pretty quickly.
I significantly reduced the amount of time it took to watch it by turning on closed captioning and fastforwarding through the sections where there was no dialogue.
If you remember the movie, there is plenty of dancing, etc. But I would guess many movies have their long periods of activity without words.

A picture like The Godfather needs to be enjoyed and savored. I think you're doing yourself a disservice by speeding through the parts you don't think are interesting or important. Try watching the whole movie next time. You'll enjoy it more.

I agree.
Just like the abridged audiocassettes of a book are nowhere near as good as reading the real thing, my disrespect to FFCoppola by using my FF key is only cheating myself.
Still, I would have ended up deleting it if I hadn't zipped through like I did. So some is better than nothing.
A continuation of this line of thinking suggests I should read the book instead.
Anyway, I just wanted to remind folks to turn on closed captions to aid in shortening movies.

Here's another trick for those of us always short on space. (I have a 30 hour unit, but it always seems full.)
It takes a couple extra steps, but if you are going to TiVo something really long like The Godfather or the Superbowl, break it up into several manual recordings of 1 or 2 hours each. That way, there's less pressure to watch the program quickly just to free up the space. You can savor a great movie like The Godfather, and clear up space on your TiVo one hour at a time as you progress through the movie.
Of course, I'm assuming that you, like me, don't always have large blocks of time to devote to one particular program, and don't mind breaking it up and watching pieces over several days. If you tend to sit and watch til it's over, then my tip won't help you very much.

Yep. Waiting for 2.0.1 first, however. Not completely sure why. Someday, though.

No need to wait.
There've been more than enough successes reported by beta testers.
Even though 2.0.1 hasn't gone gold yet, there's no reason to think anything in the final version will be detrimental to hacked units. And if you want your backup to be 2.0.1, you can always just upgrade the backup.
Just my 2 cents... Personally, I couldn't wait. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif

Latest speculation is that you won't be able to. You'll be allowed ONE upgrade per serial number. So, if you upgrade your hacked unit, you won't be able to put your backup drive in and have that upgrade too.

Damn... I've been gone from the forums too long. Just can't keep abreast of it all.

I have seen the Godfather, by itself, sitting through the whole dance thing. I also saw it fast-forwarded through the whole dance thing. I definitely preferred the latter.
We have often seen trilogies back-to-back on weekends. For example, we'll watch 1, 2, and 3 of "The Godfather", "Die Hard", "Back to the Future", "Star Wars", half of the "Star Trek" films, and several others. It does make it more interesting. However, that dance thing has got to go.

It would be nice if there were a Delete option that would allow you to delete portions that you have already viewed and leave the rest as a partial.

You need to consider what was tested.

I wouldn't be too certain of that if I were you. It could end up being very important to have a backup of 2.0.1 Final as it was installed on your system before a marriage. Remember Richard's warnings about cryptographic signatures? Once they are put in place, a 1.3.0 backup's signatures won't match and may refuse to start up.

Why not send it to video tape? This way you can clear up the space and savor one of the best movies ever.

With this method...you could get '2001: A Space Odyssey' down to about 15 minutes... http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif

Well, occasionally there are "Dater Updates" where they revisit an old couple and see if the romance lasted. I enjoy those.
Still, with FF, I'm able to watch an entire Blind Date episode in about 14 minutes. Lots of commercial and filler there.

Huh.. You know, I sat thru the Godfather one time, and walked away wondering "what was the big deal? That movie was rather lame."
Sure wish I'd had Tivo then, I could have realized it was a dumb movie in only a third of the time. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/tongue.gif

Here's another good tip: many books are really, really long, and take lots of time to read. To speed things up, look for the version that says "Cliff Notes" or "Monarch Notes" on the cover. It's the exact same book without all that tedious filler. Or better yet, use the new Wishlist feature to TiVo the movie version. Then you can just use "Skip to End," because the only good stuff happens in the last 30 seconds anyway. I read "Moby Dick" this morning while I was brushing my teeth, and tonight I'm planning to digest the complete works of Shakespeare!

I think that I need to become a member of the "Just get to the good stuff" department.
I was watching Cabaret last night - never seen it before, but really liked the music. After about 20 minutes, I was fast-forwarding to just catch the music numbers! <g> Needless to say, I took my thumbs-up off just prior to deleting it.
Jeff
PS - I have the Godfather sitting on my Tivo waiting to be viewed.
