More on a working Tivo

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Boy do I need a better signal and TV. With the rain and this lousy tv my signals are terrible.

Had to go buy another SCART connector even though one came in the box, but I should have gotten one a while ago. Probably could have gotten it working without it, but I had to wait an hour for the tv to be freed up anyway.

Setup didn't take long at all, but then there were just 5 channels. A bit confusing with the choices since it seemed to list some I know we don't get. I tried changing it around, but I've now taken what it said it found, which seems good enough, although the signal isn't all that good (with or without Tivo).

10 minutes to cable it together is a bit optimistic though. (I wonder if you get Sky installation if the installer stays around 2-3 hours to make sure everything works).

Anyway.

Once its up and running, you notice very quickly that 'as recommended by Sky Digital' is very prominently displayed on all the Tivo Central screens. A bit annoying, but if a little ad helps TiVo sell, fine.

Quite a lot of programmes don't seem to have detailed information on them. The main shows seem okay though. Where does TiVo get its info from?

Already had a few suggestions for shows I didn't know were on but I'll watch! Very nice.

The advance button on the remote doesn't appear to work correctly. If I'm watching live tv for a bit, then rewind some, then hit the advance button it jumps to the end of the recording (correct), but it I hit it again it doesn't do anything noticeable (the manual says it should jump to the beginning).

When I went into Tivo Central once, I got a short animated intro with the TiVo character. How do you get that back?

There aren't any pre-loaded commercials. And I was looking forward to an hour infomercial on thighmaster http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

The Channel Highlights section is empty. No Inside TiVo either.

I notice that too. Quite a lot of programmes are listed as having "CC" (which I assume to be subtitles) when they are not. Quite a lot of programmes that DO have subtitles are not listed.

The TiVo also doesn't seem to cope very well with cable channels which share a channel number - when I'm browing the channels using "Watch Live TV", if I tune to Channel 9 (which is Fox Kids from 6am-7pm, and National Geographic from 7pm-7am - and the TiVo DOES know this) it tells me I'm watching a programme called "SIGN OFF" on National Geographic. Which I'm not.

Odd really, but I suppose it'll get better!

That feature is only available on shows that were recorded previously, and not on live TV or shows that are in the process of recording.

On the US version you simply push the TiVo button and then zero. It should be the same for the UK version.

It must be said, the little Tivo-0 animation rocks. :-)

Then again, the built-in "Sky TV superstar Tanya Bryer shows you how to work your TiVo" video is quite nice also.

Something else I didn't notice immediately is that the menu background (with the clouds) is actually constantly animated too.

Dead clever stuff, this.

Dan - thanks for this - I just found TiVo 0 in the FAQ. And Tivo 2 is way better then looking for the todo list.

No jump to start on Live TV. Bummer. If I'm 10 minutes late into a Live TV show then, do I have to use the back button in 3 times speed to see it from the start? I hope this is a 2.0 kind of thing?

I haven't got the 'how to work your TiVo' video. Arghh. It says it should be there in the manual, but nothing. No entry in Now Showing for this, and there wasn't one to begin with. Could I have deleted it accidentally, or was it never there?? How do I get it now? A free videotape perhaps?

Yes 3X rewind is the only way to go back in live TV or in a recording that is still in the process of recording. I'm not sure if this will be fixed in 2.0 or not, but it doesn't look good since I see no reference to it in the FAQ.

My personal opinions/ stuff I found elsewhere:

1: The sky recommends TiVo ad
Why would the "as recommended by Sky" help sell TiVos? After all, you are watching it from the comfort of your armchair which means you have already bought it (unless, of course, we are all TiVo agents for any friends/ family that we show it to).

For me, it sells neither TiVo or Sky Digital because I already own one of each.

2: The clouds
Yup. The clouds move. Also - watch the little TiVo chappy. Occasionaly he shifts a little and his antennae waver.

3: The intro video (using your TiVo)
I've heard from other threads that this video was not included in some older models. It was included in mine that I bought yesterday (sat 23 Dec).

4: Advance
Yeah. I made the mistake of thinking advance used twice would send me to the beginning of the liveTV buffer. Then I reread the manual.

Still - I think it would be a good feature to implement http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

5: CC/ Subtitles
Isn't "CC" for the American's "Closed Captioning" system? In the manual it states that "T" is for subtitles.

6: TiVo animation
TiVo - 0 is one way. Others included pulling the (mains) plug and re-inserting it, full system reset or restart recorder. Due to a fault in mine (described in "TiVo regular reboots" elsewhere in the forum - I wont bore with details) I saw the anim more times than anyone could wish for! http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

Well thats an old post to bring up http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif Welcome to the TiVolution - at least once you get a non-rebooting TiVo.

I don't think its meant to sell TiVos, but to sell Sky. If you don't have Sky its a great way of putting Sky's name in front of you every day until you break down. Kind of like the Channel Highlights - you think a great show will be on, but then find its only on Sky - and they give you their phone number to make it even easier to order. Clearly these 'ads', which don't bother me anymore, were part of TiVo partnering with Sky to have Sky do the phone support.

Kind of odd to re-read one of my earlier posts. Having re-run guided setup recently I can see how extremely frustrating it was waiting for TiVo to set up. It would be great if they could do the initial interactive phone set up first, then give you back regular tv while it imports/indexes for a few hours in the background.
