HACK: Enabling backdoors

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: GarySargent

WARNING: Only for advanced users!!!

For those of you not reading the TiVo Underground board this hack works on UK boxes!...

Go to "Pick Programs to Record"
Go to "Search By Name"
Go to "All Programmes"
Enter "0V1T" - thats TIVO backwards with a ONE and a ZERO.
Press Thumbs up.
You should get a message "Backdoors Enabled!"

From the hack FAQ...

Your TiVo show more information in the System Information screen. The TiVo will show how long it has been up since the last power cycle.

This allows you to access some hidden features of the TiVo. If this variable is set the TiVo should say ``Backdoors Enabled'' in the system information screen. When this mode is active the following TiVo remote key sequences will access special features.

``Clear Enter Clear Thumbs-Up'' will allow you to access the TiVo's
log files on your TV screen. Page up and page down allow you to move
through the log information and the right arrow you to move through
the log files.

``Clear Enter Clear Thumbs-Down'' will shut down the myworld program
on a TiVo. The myworld program is the brains of the TiVo. Shutting
it down is not advisable since the only thing you can do with the
TiVo at that point is use the BASH shell if you activated one. If
you do have a BASH prompt you can rerun the myworld program to get
the TiVo running fully again. If not you need to power down and up
the TiVo to get it fully functional again.

``Clear Enter Clear 4'' this forces suggestions to be rebuilt.

``Clear Enter Clear FastForward'' this resets the TiVo

``Clear Enter Clear 5'' toggles the overshoot correction during fast
forwarding on and off.

Forgot - so far the only known way to disable back doors is to reboot the machine.

Cor. Those log files are heavy duty stuff. Interesting to see all the encryption involved in the schedule data. (Blowfish keys, etc.)

Makes you realise what a complex little beast the TiVo is, under the bonnet.

Couldn't resist trying this out! However, you are right to caution users on this one - I tried to view some logs (sad though I am) using the clear-enter-clear-thumbs up method and the box re-booted itself, cutting off my recording of Ali-G!

Anyway - backdoors are always exciting I guess!

Further to my previous ineptitude, I have tried it several more times and it worked - however, I wasn't recording anything this time.

Yes I've had my box reboot a few times whilst experimenting with this. Only play when your box isn't recording! http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

Heres another thing you can do when you have bacdoors enabled...

Clear, Enter, Clear, Tab

(Where Tab is the go to end of buffer button).

This sets "Boat-Anchor=TRUE" on the SYSTEM page.

Having searched the US forums for Boat Anchor info however it seems advisable not to play with this option! From what I can gather this is set to true when there is a difference greater than five days between the last successful dial up and the system clock.

Anyway common consensus was not to set it!

Seems most things are Clear, Enter, Clear, Somthing - no doubt there are others...

When viewing the logs - press the right arrow key to switch to other logs!

Yes worth thinking twice if you're recording before doing this - if you get confused and do clear-enter-clear-thumbs down it shuts down myworld (the heart of the TiVo) and the only way to restart is to pull the plug (or run myworld from the serial tty if you've enabled that and have the serial cable plugged in).

Neil.
