Extended Warranties and Lifetime Subscriptions

I've been reading the posts about getting extended warranties with retailer-swapout, etc., and it makes a lot of sense. The only question I have (and maybe this has been answered before) is how does Tivo handle subscriptions in retailer-swapouts? Do you just call Tivo and say "I had unit serial number XXXXXXXX on an extended warranty, it crapped out, and got replaced with YYYYYYYYY, can you please move my lifetime subscription to that unit?" Do you need to document it somewhere, because I assume this would be easily abused (especially where OLD_MODEL no longer is made and the swap-out gives you the next higher model because of the policies in place, etc. etc.).

Surely it can't be THAT simple/easily-abused... but it must have come up before... Is it just a matter of providing some documentation from the retailer that they did the swap-out?

When my Tivo was replaced by the dealer after it died (in only 3 weeks), Tivo transferred the subscription with a single phone call.

I think the key is it needs to be an authorized dealer like Circuit City or Best Buy. Some other dealers know how to clone the old serial number onto the new one but if they don't do that you may not be able to transfer.

i know at Best Buy when you buy the TiVo the information about the extended warranty and the TiVo serial number is linked in the computer to your name and address. I'm not sure if this is related or not, but it is interesting.
