is it me, or does the resolution on 2.5.1 look even better?

the resolution fix came to me a couple months ago. Now that i have 2.5.1, my picture seems to be sharper....did TIVO send an updated resolution fix w/2.5.1?

thanks

Did you turn off RF smoothing under Tivo? I don't know what menu option it is.

Posted by: touring850

linhpham2,

Yes it looks much better to me. And yes I had the resolution patch for 2.0.1, so it's not just that.

Hmm...the VBR doesn't do much for me on a 55" TV so I turned it off. The resolution seems fine at CBR, though. <shrug>

I made a recording at best and at high and both look excellent on my 27" TV with v. 2.5 and VBR turned on.

Great enhancements!

Hopefully we'll find a few people who are willing to give their best opinions on how VBR looks compared to CBR.

Anyone experiencing worse resolution even with SDS (save disk space) off, especially on larger screens?

I'm recording everything at high and best, and see a noticeable difference in quality with pre-2.5 and post 2.5 recordings -- especially on far shots and brighter scenes. Not really noticeable on darker scenes or close-ups. Almost as if SDS is still on (even though it's not).

I have been watching football on high quality with the resolution fix. I was very happy with the results. This weekend I recorded the game at high quality with VBR on. I had a lot of pixelation problems. It was on the action shots and scene changes (quick cuts, not disolves). It would clear up right away, but I still had the problem for a half second or so.
I didn't have this problem before 2.5, but I haven't watched any action stuff recorded on 2.5 with CBR. I am going to turn off VBR on this unit and leave it on for awhile on my other unit.

What's your source? As has been said many times in the past VBR is not ideal for noisy sources like standard cable or OTA. Even if you have a good cable or OTA signal there is usually enough noise in the signal to cause this kind of pixelation in real fast moving scenes.

Personally I think the space/quality trade off is acceptable with my strait cable conection, but then again I don't watch sports so I may not be seeing as much of this as you.

I turned on VBR (Save Disk Space) and noticed no problem with any show EXCEPT Football and other sports. it has been posted here that quick movement or a lot of movement doesn't work well with VBR because the compression method. I noticed the same problem with Digital Cable. The signal was crystal clear except for a few shots with a lot of action. The pixelation was like rain for half a moment. I noticed it and that's what matters to me.
I think I'll turn on VBR during the week and off for Football, etc. Overall the picture DOES look better.

With VBR on, I thought the picture was clearer and sharper from a clear cable analog signal on my Sony Wega 36. However, fairly regular pixelation tiled me toward turning it off. Now, I find picture quality under CBR to be inferior compared to what I recall under 2.0.1.

Cheers, Igor

So far I haven't noticed any pixelation problems with 2.5.1 and VBR even with football and baseball (with satellite). Like a few others here have stated, I think the picture quality is in fact better than it was with 2.01.

Dan,
My source is a Motorola digital cable box on both units that have 2.5. The game was on channel 3, the worst channel I receive. My third unit is a direct cable connect and is set to basic, so VBR won't come into play on this one.
The TV I watch football on is a Sony KV36XBR400 and has a beautiful picture, so I can't handle the pixelation. On my 27 inch TV, where I use basic as a default, it doesn't bother me.

I just got 2.5, and I immediately turned off "save disk space". However, the picture is definitely worse than it was with 2.0.1. Of course, my picture quality wasn't great to begin with even with an amp and my 27" TV, but could 2.5 make the picture worse?

I have two 20hr units and two E* 3800 sat. receivers going to my Kenwood A/V unit via S-vid to Video 1 and Video 2.

The Tivo on Vid 1 got 2.5 4 days ago now - Vid 2 is still running 2.0.

The picture quality improvement is evident when switching from Vid 2 to Vid 1 (vid 1 being WAY better)http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif.

The picture seems to artifact a lot less in Live-TV and all my recordings at basic have had a noticeable improvement as well.
I discovered this since I have a season-pass for Invader Zim on Tivo 1 and Tivo 2 had recorded the same episode as a suggestion http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif.
Both were recorded at basic but the recording on Tivo 1 with 2.5 looks almost (kinda) like medium. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

- The Save Disc Space is off (will test pic-quality when both units have 2.5)

---Just check my system info on both units 2.5 also increased Video capacity!!!!

2.0.1-002-000 - recording capacity

6 hrs, 6 min (Best Quality)
21 hrs, 3 min (Basic Quality)

2.5.1-01-1-000 - recording capacity

6 hrs, 12 min (Best Quality)
21 hrs, 25 min (Basic Quality)

So it looks like I got extra 6 minutes at Best and 22 minutes at Basic.

Cool.

Okay, you're confusing me (not that it's that hard to do http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif). You say you see an improvement when switching from Vid 1 (2.5) to Vid 2 (2.0); yet the rest of your statement leads me to believe you're seeing a better pic with 2.5.

Did you mean "the picture improvement is evident when switching from Vid 1 to Vid 2 -- Vid 1 looks better"?

Update.
This weekend I recorded football at high with CBR. No pixilation problem at all. As said earlier, I am recording on my worst cable channel received, which is still pretty good when compared to OTA.

Sorry!
I did mean that Vid 1's picture (tivo with 2.5) was better than Vid 2's.

I didn't catch that when proof reading http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
